Two unequivocal facts;
1 - Virgil Van Dyke is NOT the best defender in the world.
2 - I really need to work on my game for next April Fools Day.

If we win the league big v gets player of the year. If city win it sterling will pick up that accolade.

2.) 01 Apr 2019 12:22:25
But if you had to pick a player for your team would it be vvd or RS?

If anyone picks sterling they are seriously deluded.

{Ed001's Note - I agree with you, but I think it should go to Sterling in recognition for what he has had to put up with, in terms of racist abuse, and the excellent way he has handled it. His input into that debate this season has been mature and well thought out, while his treatment by the media has been, at times, disgusting.}

3.) 01 Apr 2019 12:32:50
Disagree, Ed. That is not a reason to award somebody Player of The Season. Sports Personality of the Year is for that purpose.
POTY should be based on on-field criteria alone, and Virgil van Dijk has been miles and miles ahead of anyone else this season. By contrast, Sterling has debatably not even been Man City’s best player (I would give that to Bernardo Silva) .
It sets the wrong precedent entirely to award POTY to a player with influence from off-field activities unless they influenced the image of the game in a seriously negative way.

{Ed001's Note - of course it is a reason to award them the award, as he has face adversity and shown a new side to himself. For the last few weeks Mane and Fabinho have been head and shoulders above VVD, just as B. Silva was better than Sterling for a few weeks, but you aren't suggesting them.}

4.) 01 Apr 2019 13:08:59
Only a personal preference, Raheem Sterling should win Sports Personality. I'd have to go Van Dijk for POTY however, if Sterling won it ahead of VVD then credit to him and he deserves it.

{Ed001's Note - as a preference? I would rather it went to any Liverpool player ahead of any other player, but that doesn't mean it should.}

5.) 01 Apr 2019 13:19:59
Only because of how Sterling handled himself this year, i've just been super impressed with him, seems like a really good lad.

6.) 01 Apr 2019 13:35:23
I’d like to see Virgil win the players award and Sterling the football writers. They’ve both done enough to win. Back in the day, we used to get split winners.

What I don’t want to see is Sterling to get young player if the year. The age criteria for that award is too high (24).

7.) 01 Apr 2019 15:22:27
People have had few weeks spells but for excellence over the whole campaign it has to be Van Dijk. don't think he's had one poor game all season.

Partly because it’s a very informative article and partly because it backs up a theory of mine, i would really recommend an article by Johnathan Wilson on The Guardian Sportbog - it focuses on Allison but breaks down our play this season statistically and explains a few regular questions people ask on here. I posted a while ago my theory that Klopp’s holding us back a bit for the latter half of the season, it runs with that idea better than I ever could!

Yup good read that, thanks for the heads up!

Ed001, what’s your take on Jonathan Wilson? I’ve only read his articles and haven’t finished Inverting the Pyramid but he seemed to know his stuff, lol. I like how he went about explaining the concepts.

{Ed001's Note - intelligent enough bloke but bores me to tears to be perfectly honest. I have struggled to get through Inverting the Pyramid for a long time and just find it tedious, so have little idea of if any of it is correct as I have barely got past the start. I am not a big fan of his. I find he is just as tiresome when he is on podcasts, he is a pedant, which is fine, but there is no humour and he is not always as right as he thinks he is.}

2.) 16 Dec 2018 09:41:33
Tried to find the article with no luck. Can anyone post a link please?

3.) 16 Dec 2018 12:06:28
Haha I get what you mean Ed, his podcasts are a bit dry, to say the very least. Thanks anyway mate, let’s hope for some fine result today.

{Ed001's Note - dry is very much the word. He just has no personality, and I find his writing the same.}

4.) 16 Dec 2018 12:07:58
Robbo you should be able to find it if you google Jonathan Wilson and Guardian. It’s his latest article. I’m not sure if links are allowed on this site?

{Ed001's Note - links are fine, it is just sometimes the spam filter swallows them, so you have to remove the http:// bit off the beginning to avoid that.}

Born and raised in Manchester as a Liverpool fan, whenever people ask I always say it’s because I was brought up properly! Truth is my dad fell in love with the team of the 60’s and bought me up the same way. My earliest memory is being ushered out of the room by my mum as we watched Hillsborough unfold on the TV.

You are a good man, and respect to anyone who is as loyal as yourself.

2.) 16 Nov 2018 07:55:15
Your dad is a wise man! very similar to me to be honest, I had no choice, I was a Liverpool fan from birth and that was that haha! which obviously I'm happy about, I couldn't dream of supporting another side and if I tried to when I was younger I'd of probably been disowned lol.

3.) 16 Nov 2018 10:19:30
Me too. I was just a red and that was it. Never even entered my head to support anyone else. Just about remember watchin houghton, Nicol etc. also remember Sean Dundee lol.

4.) 16 Nov 2018 13:21:21
My Dad's actually a blue, but never put any pressure on me to follow him, and by the time I started following football properly, it made more sense to support Liverpool for the banter! One of the best decisions i've ever made, so cheers dad!

5.) 16 Nov 2018 18:31:45
If my son wanted to support anyone else other than Liverpool, I'd fully support him through the adoption process :)

6.) 16 Nov 2018 22:23:06
Haha I laughed out loud at that Zed! Brilliant!

Similar to everyone else I was a red from the womb. My parents, grandparents and great grandparents were all red and season ticket holders so it’s engrained in my DNA.

This time last season we were already out of contention for the PL, look at us this year! When you look at the league table, pay attention to the points column, not the GD column. After a World Cup and with some key signings I’m sure Klopp is holding them back a bit. I’d call that shrewd management.
My theory is he’ll aim to keep it the same through the cliched ‘packed festive fixture schedule’ then let them off the leash sometime in the new year. Assuming we don’t stutter beforehand, how the team balances when he does will be the biggest test of our title credentials.

Boom.

2.) 15 Nov 2018 13:26:58
I can't disagree with any of that, which is a nice change!

3.) 15 Nov 2018 13:57:16
Really smart theory there mate! Wish and pray it works out for good.

4.) 15 Nov 2018 20:27:09
Fingers crossed mate.

I’m not sure international football is a good marker for young talents to be honest mate. Even low level national teams are made up of seasoned pros who, despite playing at a lower level domestically, know how to manipulate younger, less experienced players. I’ve not seen any of the Wales games, just an opinion. That said, anyone seen any Derby games? The words ‘won back possession, beat a defender and fired into the bottom corner’ made me think Klopp might like the player he gets back next preseason.

Great discussion! Just for how many yards he stole for THAT free kick I’d give Gary Mac a mention, he had a massive impact on that squad too. Every player in the current squad has an application pending, we’ll find out in May.

If love a crack at a match review but I’m a chef, it’s December - the 3 hours it takes just to watch the game twice would be a stretch, let alone the time to write the report. More than happy to chip in with a bit of writing though to (hopefully) keep people entertained. I’m putting the finishing touches today to something I’ve written for this site that will be getting sent to you lovely Ed’s tomorrow.

You’ve got a very personable style of writing Ed, always worth reading even if I’ve no interest in the subject matter. I write myself, had a life changing diagnosis this year so I’m looking at possibilities to take it up professionally. Got one thing in particular might be good for this site, would you want to give it a read? And how would I get it to you?

Can’t wait Ed. I read it for the football but wouldn’t mind a few other bits and pieces. Maybe some six degrees of separation style things that start and begin with the beautiful game but bring in other things you’ve got on your mind.

ChefMattD

{Ed001's Note - that was how I was intending to do it. Start on football and then just follow it down the rabbit hole, so to speak....}
