Question for Ed001,
This isn't me having a go at Salah as I think he is amazing but what are your thoughts regarding his penalty taking?
For me he just doesn't have a good enough conversion rate and he hits far to many virtually straight down the middle or when he does try to put them down the side he always seems to overcompensate and puts them wide?
Do you think it's just a case that Klopp just thinks he will strop big time if he takes him off the penalties and that will damage his overall contribution in games?
For me now that we have Macalister this has become more of an issue?
Welcome your thoughts as Salah seems to need to be handled very carefully in my opinion.

EDNINO71

{Ed001's Note - I have always said I don't like Salah on pens but yes, I am sure that he will stay on them to keep him happy. I would say that odd missed pen is worth the overall contribution he makes.}

1.) 20 Aug 2023 08:10:19
He was very good till he missed one for egypt. There seems to be a loss of confidence and it is visible now.

Klopp not strong enough to say no.

It is not needed also because he is still 98%+ successful. Just the same confident feeling is missing.

2.) 20 Aug 2023 08:12:14
He isn't the best penalty taker we've seen but (bar recently) his record has been fairly good.

Though his missed penalty ruined my fantasy team as I had him as captain.

3.) 20 Aug 2023 08:49:22
ED01 - surprised you think that. I see your point but we have some excellent penalty takers and he isn't one of them. We can't let him take them just to keep him happy.

4.) 20 Aug 2023 09:00:31
Bar the recent blip his record was very good, didn’t he score close to 20 in a row at one point?

5.) 20 Aug 2023 09:07:33
Szoboszlai is the best penalty taker at the club. Salah has a good conversion rate but I never feel confident watching him take them and i feel it will cost us one day. It's not going to change because milner and fabs were better takers as well but mo always got them for his goal records.

6.) 20 Aug 2023 09:30:35
I am not sure on Milner or Fabinho being better.

Salah doesn't give confidence but has very good conversion rate.

At the momement TAA should not be taking freekicks. they should go to Szoboszlai.

Not sure if Klopp can even change that.

7.) 20 Aug 2023 10:02:35
Why create more problems for yourself than a potential problem that might be happening? He's missed a couple after hitting 20 or so in a row. Take him off penalties and you'll see a change in his demeanour. The man is motivated by records (we saw his strop after being taken off last week and missing the opening day scoring record), the Golden Boot and all the various accolades that go to, and motivate, a world class player. That's just the way it is. Leave it alone.

8.) 20 Aug 2023 10:38:27
Agree 1969.

This year we will see Salah creating more assists than all previous years ever.

Wush we had better forward than Jota or Nunez.

Their reading/ intelligence isn't same as Bobby/ Salah/ Mane level.

Nunez can still improve but I doubt Jota can ever. his skillset is very different (headers and poaching scraps than real linkup and connecting with others)

9.) 20 Aug 2023 10:50:02
As long as he scores the rebound we’ll be fine ??.

10.) 20 Aug 2023 11:12:22
Jota reminds me a little of van nistlerooy in terms of finding the net. We need a striker like that but he frustrates me so much. His decision making is shocking when it comes to picking a pass.

{Ed025's Note - i think hes an awful player RS, he can finish though and imo should be only coming on from the bench mate..

11.) 20 Aug 2023 11:19:31
I’m going to sack him off my FF team, he misses too many ?.

12.) 20 Aug 2023 11:24:55
Jota is infuriating. playing well he scores and is active, otherwise he becomes non existent and sometimes a hindrance, causing breaks in play . until we go down to 10 and he plays better!? He should not be starting at Cf regardless. After his pre season form Klopp should have backed Nunez and started him, especially as gakpo is playing in midfield.

13.) 20 Aug 2023 11:30:36
He clearly likes to be in the running for the golden boot each year, if letting him takes penalties keeps him in the running and motivated to score as many goals as possible, then keep him on them.
Even though he’s not that good at them.

Hi Ed's, sorry if this sounds like a really stupid question and I will probably get shot to bits for asking it but something has always puzzled me recently! Why at the kick off do possession obsessed teams such as Liverpool and Man City roll the ball back to a defender and hoof the ball up the left hand side of the pitch with little more than a 50/ 50 chance of retaining the ball? Why don't they just retain possession and build up from the back at that point as well? Not the end of the world or anything like that just always strikes me as odd that all?

EDNINO71

{Ed001's Note - it is an odd one, but I believe it is down to stats analysis finding it to be the most effective way to put early pressure on the opposition. Personally I would have thought a bit of variety would be better, but stats don't allow for context so they wouldn't include that it will be more effective when not the only way to begin a game.}

1.) 23 Oct 2021 08:34:30
Thanks for the response Ed, I have been coaching kids for the past 5 years and I try to get them playing ‘the right way’ and thought I might be missing a trick. so to speak.

{Ed001's Note - if you had a kid on the left who was 3 inches taller than his opponent then you might be, but otherwise I would say the best thing to do is mix it up. Just like when you are on the ball, if you always do the same thing it becomes easier to stop than if you do different things. As Sir Bob would say, it's not about the long ball or the short ball, it is about the right ball.}

2.) 23 Oct 2021 09:46:25
I have never understood this either and whilst admittedly I mainly watch LFC, PL and Championship games exclusively, I cannot think of many example where this approach to the start of a half has come off. The one that springs to mind is a Michael Owen goal against Bayern Munich in a super cup game in the early 00’s if memory serves.

3.) 23 Oct 2021 10:04:47
Only a guess but I think the strategy is to put the opposition on the back foot and us on the front foot. If we pass it backwards then the opposition start the game on the front foot pressing. Like I said only a guess.

4.) 23 Oct 2021 10:24:18
Absolutely JK, you want the opposition chasing back early/ worrying about the ball over the top.

5.) 23 Oct 2021 12:07:13
It’s like rugby, lads. Punt the ball deep into the opponent’s corner and let them play from there.
If they make a mistake, it’s deep in their own half.

6.) 23 Oct 2021 12:12:26
Isn’t it just a case of moving their players out of position and getting yours into their half as soon as possible. Most cases you’re aiming for the fast winger or a thrown in far down near their goal. From that it tends to get hoofed back or you win possession high up.

7.) 23 Oct 2021 12:51:08
I can see why it would work if you’re playing a team you know you’re better than. A lot of time it results in a throw in which if they win either forces them to attempt to play out, from deep in their own half so you can press them into a mistake in dangerous areas or they hoof it back to you. Or you win the throw yourself and try work something from further up. I remember Spain doing it to Tahiti in the 2013 confederations cup. I don’t see why you’d do it vs good teams that are capable of playing through you however. The only thing i don’t fully understand is why teams start kind kicking off with one player passing back rather than two, EURO 2016 is when it first started happening i think.

Personally I can't wait for the new season and I'm feeling really confident! Allison should have a much better season this year after his personal problems last year for one. We as near as damn it have a brand new back four with the signing of Konate, Gomez and VVD returning fingers crossed and TTA in absolutely outstanding form at the end of last season bodes really well for us at the back! With the brand new TTA firing on one side of the pitch the space will automatically open up for Robbo to blossom again as well trust me! Henderson will always be a leader of men in the midfield and Curtis Jones needs to be given more game time now to develop the obvious talent he has. The midfield needs an extra body in my opinion, we need some real drive to connect the midfield to the attack a little bit more but again I'm confident that will be addressed. Up front Jota will always get you goals and has already proved to be a great signing. We do need more from Bobby, love him to bits and I really do think with an in form team around him his confidence will soar again. Mane and Salah will never change, they will never pass to each other and will continue to growl at each other but there drive to continually outscore each other should be embraced by the fans as it guarantees us goals year on year. Finally we have our biggest signing of the year back this year and it doesn't cost the club a penny, the fans. it's up to us to help drive the team to glory not just sit back and wait for it to happen and then start cheering. Ready for the new season boys? . let's go!

Great post. Nice to see a really positive message. I agree that we need a replacement for Gini but I do think we will see the best of Thiago at Liverpool this year. Fab, Hendo and Thiago as our starting midfielder three looks pretty good to me.

2.) 27 Jul 2021 07:53:41
I think Gomez is a long way from being ready if his knee is swelling up after any physical exertion.

3.) 27 Jul 2021 07:54:32
I like Jones for the midfield driver. I reckon if he got an extended run of games it would do him the world of good. He may not have the pace and power of Ox but his creativity and ball skills are better and I really enjoy watching him play. I think we need that if the mid consists of Hendo and Fab, neither of which penetrate forward with the ball much. Jones can really learn off Thiago.
We all know we have work horses in the middle, Milner included, so Thiago and Jones, possibly Elliot in there too, and I'm not worried about the midfield much, injuries aside.

4.) 27 Jul 2021 08:50:56
I am worried about Joe too, VVVV but hopefully the medical team are managing his return to fitness. I am excited to see what Elliot can bring to the first team. I am hoping his enthusiasm will be infectious and make everyone step up a gear.

5.) 27 Jul 2021 09:26:41
Not very confident about winning it, but we will be in the mix.
Am actually even not worried about signings i think we have a great squad. Contrary to others i think we have depth in the squad too.

My issue is though the month of january. 5 seasons in a row we kind of loose our way in month of january and early feb. There is some kind of january jinx on klopp.
If we don't have that stupid january dip i think we will do great, but think we have afcon this january and we will loose few players to that so that just adds to our january woes.

Chelsea and city won't loose their best players to afcon. We will and that too in that wretched month of january.

6.) 27 Jul 2021 09:39:14
I am concerned the big money teams will buy a lead on us. Man U, Chelsea, and Man City. The players Man U are buying or have bought. Kane and Grealish probably to City.
A top forward to Chelsea.
When these players bed in. These teams will be a handful.

It is difficult to know where we are as due injuries and this could easily happen again.
I would be more confident with the addition of a midfielder to replace Wijnaldum.
Plus, a sharp incisive forward.

I think as usual Liverpool are doing things quietly behind the scenes. The selling of a few players could be an indication.

7.) 27 Jul 2021 13:24:43
Yuri01, the counter to your argument is that our team don't need that much time to bed in so while their teams are teething, we could already be off to the races and depending on how things play out, the lead could be considerable. These teams have outspent us for the past near 4 years YET we are the team City fear the most and even Pep is not stupid enuff to believe we won't be back for another 38 rounds.

Could these teams buy a lead on us? Sure. Could we get a lead on them in my counter scenario? Of course. We just don't know. One game at a time. That's how we beat these teams to become Champions of Everywhere. That mantra should NOT change. I'm excited.

8.) 27 Jul 2021 16:00:37
I think it’s almost impossible for City to spend £40 all in on 2 players. They would have to sell 3 or 4 quality players and if so not sure they would be any stronger.

9.) 27 Jul 2021 16:15:19
I think we’re a quality centre midfielder short. Up front Mane and Salah will have benefitted from a decent break, something neither of them had last year. Looks like Klopp is trying to mould Ox into a false nine as alternative to Bobby, which may work, Elliott is going to have a few games too, Jota is another year in and hopefully Minamino will settle. Having van Dijk back is huge, as defences win titles, make no mistake. There’s plenty to be positive about but also there are things needing to be done which if we fail to address will cost us.
