Not a rumour but question to the Eds. Recent Stoke talk got me thinking. I remember in the past Martin O'Neill was speculated as potential Liverpool manager but obviously that was in papers and we all know how reliable that can be. Was he ever in the frame and if so did it get close? Also how do you think he would have been as manager?
{Ed001's Note - thankfully he was never close to destroying us the way he left Leicester, Villa, Sunderland etc in a mess. He is a dreadful manager and we are lucky he was never given the role.}

I never realised he caused such damage. What sort of things did he do that were particularly bad? I was only a wee lad (so to speak) when he was manager of villa and my youthful mind at the time thought that he wasn’t too bad. If I remember correctly he had villa competing for top 6 fairly regularly.

{Ed001's Note - he bought in lots of players but never played them and they were all on much higher wages than the ones keeping them out of the team. It is why Villa and Sunderland struggled with money issues as they were forced to pay off a lot of players to get rid. Subsidising wages after they left etc, which put a strain on finances.
His football is awful hoofball as well. Terrible manager, who is good at one thing, he does get his players putting in 100% regularly. However tactically awful and far too loyal to players long after they should have been replaced. Built squads far too big for his budgets etc.}

i saw article recently that Sunderland have one of the highest debt ratios in the whole of European football.
that's not from buying world-class players to compete at the top level.

Thought for the fans on here, if LFC follow the sign VVD at any price route that many seem to want, how long do you reckon it will take for the price to become a weapon to use against him when he makes a mistake? What reason is there that he won't get the same grief as Karius did considering expectations will be higher, despite knowledgeable warnings from the likes of Ed001 and the price tag will be astronomical.

The pressure will be on him even before he steps onto the turf as a red.
Pogba for one was extensively scrutinized for not justifying his fee last year.
It is upto VVD to gear up for this pressure and deliver calmy (Lovren who took the same route is still not the defender he was at Southampton)
The transfer saga he is involved in doesn't help his case. like us pouncing onto every opportunity to mock Sterling after his departure, Saints aren't going to let him go easy. then, its only our support as home fans that's going to get him where we want him to reach.

I actually think if he moves the best thing that could happen is an early game against them, will give a reason for the fans to get behind him, theirs will be on his case and maybe a decent performance will get him the breathing space.

Still think that the Utd mess with him was in part about not travelling well, if that makes sense, I can't see a move to Liverpool working out either. Would have thought Spurs are most likely, much as they don't need him.

Also worth considering that because the defence has been seen as shaky for several years teams have targeted, especially banging in crosses, which means keepers get exposed more as well and then targeted more etc. Bit of a vicious cycle to it really.

I don't agree that Butland is either a backwards step or worse than or even same as Karius. He is an upgrade but whether he is the required upgrade is a different matter. Questions over Butland around how much he can improve and how much the long injuries have taken from him. Alisson is a big step up and I'd agree with those saying the money is worth spending. You can tell the competence of a club by whether or not they understand the value of key players and keeper is a key player. Will be interesting to see where this goes.

The actual guidance referees are given is pretty straight forward and surely if you think most handballs are barely deliberate then why would you argue you should give an automatic infringement. The whole point is to stop a deliberate action producing an unfair gain. It is noticeable that since it was clarified there have been far more cases of defenders keeping their arms down and close to their body, one of the occasions where clarifying has helped players know what they can and cannot do. Just giving an infringement anyway surely just gives all the advantages to attacking players, including aiming at the upper body when nothing else is on.

Good keepers are very hard to find these days. Depends what you want from a keeper - the number of them who can dominate their area, communicate, deal with crosses, that kind of stuff, are low. Other things like the difference between stopping a shot and directing it away to a safe zone.
Also it seems keepers are a lot less mental these days, which tended to make them tougher.
Plus coaches have been trying to turn keepers into outfielders and a lot of EPL clubs are so obsessed with height they're now asking about grandparent height as part of whether or not they'll take a kid on. The ideal keeper for some of them seems to be a 6'6 centre back not a keeper. And I'd guess results driven business means a keeper suffering a dip in form is way less tolerated than an outfield player where it can be easier to cover. Which might also account for how many these days seem to be less confident, which then leads to less capable on crosses, dominating area, etc and around and around it goes. So generally why wouldn't a world class keeper cost 80m when there's only a handful of top level ones around anywhere.

No connections at the club. Know a couple coaches/ ex players around semi pro and soccer schools, mainly goalkeeping coaches, (who seem to all know each other around the game) . Get very few bits worth repeating from them, from what I've heard Pope is reasonably well thought of, Kasper Schmeichel thinks he's better than his old man (apparently everyone laughs at that one) . Also get a few bits from ITK people at a lower level south London club but zero use to LFC supporters.

Depends upon how you define good. Most keepers will never get near Prem standard so really Karius is a good keeper, he is on a par with many EPL keepers. The bit he hasn't proved and may never prove is to be more than that, which is what a team looking to win UCL and EPL need to have in goal.

Most significant thing though is not on your list - Salah’s totals. Firmino has already equalled his best scoring performance for the club and we’re in January. Salah has outscored him and maybe that has taken some pressure off, both off RF to be main goal scorer and removes some attention on the pitch to give him space. Hopefully Coutinho leaving won’t put pressure back to add more goals.

Oh and 20 goals is league not everything. Primary aim is still I believe to win EPL.
