Anyone else remember Michael Owen soccer skills? I was 8 when it came out and remember thinking Owen was a tit then, and not only because he called it soccer skills. He was showing how to score but was Vs a 13 year old keeper and was not holding back.

Neville Southall was guiding the keeper and even he was irked at Owen, saying we'll done, he's 13. So cringe and I think it showed how much he loved himself.

This is quite a funny clip and does make Owen look a tit.

Looking back now though a bit of tough love wouldn’t have done the kid any harm.

In this day and age kids get medals for just turning up and aren’t held accountable for anything. If this happened in this day and age Owen would have a legal case against him for bullying or some other snow flake libal case.

2.) 02 Mar 2024 20:48:49
He’s so far up his own hoop it’s unreal .

3.) 02 Mar 2024 21:07:06
I think this is all rather harmless really……who was the kid, did make as pro?
It is nice to see though how supportive Southall was though.

4.) 02 Mar 2024 23:03:43
I remember watching this show, and another show where Michael Owen was a poster that regularly talked to some kid. Different times :P

I absolutely loved it when I was a kid, and even bought the book which showcased about 100 technical exercises. Now, as an adult, it is pretty obvious that Michael Owen didn't receive the right guidance growing up. It was all about him, the star, and he never once cared about anyone but himself.

Fairplay to Southall also, he gave good positive reinforcement throughout that finishing exercises, as he could see the young keeper was a little overwhelmed by the whole thing. Not helped with Owen embarrassing the kid at times.

Loved Owen as a kid, and he was the man that made me support Liverpool, after his goal against Argentina in 1998. In fact, I always wanted him to play instead of Fowler as he was younger and looked like me. It's not until the adulthood do you realize how amazing Fowler truly was.

Also, a bit ironic that the show was shot at Stoke City's home stadium, where Owen would eventually play his final games as a player. What a fall from grace.

5.) 03 Mar 2024 02:52:17
In defence of Owen, he was about 19 when this came out. The dynamic between a 19-year old and 13-year old is different to that of a 30-year old and 13-year old. It just is.

Also it's crazy to think how much expectation was put on a teenager back then. Compare that to how we're protecting Bobby Clark who is the same age as Owen in this video.

6.) 03 Mar 2024 04:39:40
Not sure if I agree with you on that BR.
While I agree football can put crazy expectations of teenage prodigies, then and now, and as a club we definitely are doing better in managing our young talents, Owen’s behaviour in this video is nothing short of being a prick.

As a 19 yo, you are on the cusp of young adulthood, have gone through large parts of adolescence, given the chance to behave silly or even reckless at times and experience more limited consequences, and given he was a global star by then, he should know better to manage himself a lot more decently in such a situation (even if he was a prick within still) . Especially since he was up against a 13 yo kid. I can understand if it’s 2 best mates on a banter (heck, even adults do that when in a private setting), but this was someone he didn’t share a relationship with in a recorded video. I did be ashamed if this was my child.

Young teens that have achieved more in life has conducted themselves better than him. It’s a pity, so much talent, so little character and with the way he conducted himself, didn’t achieve as much as he could have in football terms and definitely didn’t endear himself to any of the clubs he turned out for in the end in my view.

{Ed001's Note - he was a bully. That is something that he showed throughout his time at Liverpool. I am not surprised he acted like this in the video as it was very much him being him.}

7.) 03 Mar 2024 08:57:36
Owen may be a young adult here, but surely plenty of us have played a kid as a young adult in some form of sport and confident none of us acted in a similar vein. Doesn’t come across as bantering or having fun with him, if anything be mortifying for the kid.

Weirdly reminded me of when Ronaldo stood up for the lad who was trying to speak to him in Portuguese and media giggled at him. then praised him for his efforts.

Sure Ronaldo has a fair bit of ego on him, but genuinely comes across as a good and altruistic guy. Funny media paint the two very differently in the uk - esp when Ronaldo seems a good role model.

8.) 03 Mar 2024 12:16:00
Yeh lads, but if any of us look back and aren't disgusted with some of the things with did as a teenager/ young man i think were telling fibs. Worth remembering Owen was only 24 by the time he LEFT Liverpool, were we all rounded perfect men by that age? i know i wasnt.

I saw it said before by a poster but just watching on ITV and seen it myself so want to echo the statement.

Pure class from those at Forest paying their respects.

Hope the 97 seats that are covered are not empty and the spirit of all those fans can enjoy this match, unlike the last time we played Forest in the FA cup

RIP. YNWA.

Honor and respect to this great climb called Nottingham Forest. Brian Clough would be so proud.

2.) 20 Mar 2022 20:27:55
Brian Clough was a goat.

{Ed0666's Note - I think you’ll find he was a human being.

3.) 20 Mar 2022 21:37:33
I grew up across the road from a lad who went on to play for Forest. He played in the famous 5-0 thrashing we handed out to them back when they were a thorn in our sides. He always spoke highly of Clough who was an unbelievably kind man behind that boisterous front.

4.) 21 Mar 2022 05:56:51
The same Brian Clough who said in his book that Liverpool fans where killed by Liverpool people and who kept that opinion for over a decade repeating it on tv.

He may have changed his stance eventually but he played his part in the Hillsborough myth.

5.) 21 Mar 2022 07:07:34
Those forest fans today didn't cover themselves in glory. Some of the chanting was vile. Fans had to have a police escort out.

6.) 21 Mar 2022 07:17:07
Have to agree with you, Wassa. As you say, he added fuel to the fire lit by the right wing press.

7.) 21 Mar 2022 09:55:32
Ed, that was hilarious.

{Ed0666's Note - 😂👍

8.) 21 Mar 2022 20:16:05
Clough might not be a goat but he managed the Rams.

Eds and reds if you will please?

So the Mrs got me a stadium tour and meet a legend Q&A. My options are Steve McMahon, Alan Kennedy, Aldo, Ian Callaghan, Phil Neal and Grobbelaar.

They were all before my time in terms of playing but I was thinking of choosing Bruce because he'd strike me as fun to have a Q&A with.

But then was thinking Ian Callaghan has played the most games and probs unsurpassable and is apparently a proper gent but then Phil Neal is the most decorated player? Who would your pick be and why?

I might take considerations because I am like a kid in a candy shop, not making a decision any time soon so need ideas 🤣

Thanks.

My Mrs got this for me a few years ago and she went with Alan Kennedy. He told some great stories and was a lovely fella. If I would have had the chose I would have went Grobbelaar because I would love to hear that spaghetti legs story.

2.) 27 Sep 2021 16:17:00
I’ve met Phil Neal, Aldo and Alan Kennedy a few times - personally I would swerve Phil Neal - that’s just my opinion.

3.) 27 Sep 2021 18:40:42
I've not met any of them, but Grobs was during my era, as was Steve McMahon and Aldo (and the tail end of Phil Neal's career)

I would probably pick Grobs, when interviewed he had some great stories and he was around for 10+ years at Liverpool.

Aldo would no doubt be funny, but he was only in the dressing room for a couple of seasons until Rushie came back.

Callahan would be fascinating if you want to find out more about the Shankly years.

I'd probably pick between Grobs and Callahan, personally.

{Ed0666's Note - Grobbelar is a riot, super funny and has some unreal stories. You’ll get plenty out of him and second choice would be Aldo as he’s got some bantz

4.) 27 Sep 2021 19:59:09
Met Aldo and Grobs. Go Bruce. He’s a top bloke. Also I’d say Aldo loves loves loves LFC. He is another nice guy. Much shorter then I even imagined. Same with McMahon. Small bloke. I’d like to chat with him but then the only question I’d want to go into is the Wimbledon final. I’d guess that’s the last question he’d want to delve into. Good luck and enjoy.

Just wondering if there was any sort of agreement over Kabak?

I mean I think there was a push by Shalke to make it an initial loan where we had to make the deal permanent but Liverpool said no. Is there any sort of terms or conditions saying if he plays 'X' amount of games then we have to commit to signing him?

Jiddon

{Ed001's Note - I don't know mate.}

1.) 14 May 2021 16:06:24
Personally I’ll think we will try and low ball them with a lower offer than the 18mill. Maybe around 10-12mill with the potential to rise to 18 if we win a champs league or prem or whatever.

2.) 14 May 2021 20:43:08
Sounds about right jordz. I think the ball is in our court if we want him.

3.) 14 May 2021 23:42:32
Defo worth buying tho going to be great in couple of years.

{Ed0666's Note - we need a great centre back now tho fam

4.) 15 May 2021 10:51:43
Too slow on the turn and poor in the air. Not what we need long term. Better to use the money for a world class player. Have to remember we aren’t building a winning team anymore, we are already a title winning team so every signing should have the aim of improving the team imo.

Try thetrainline. com Barry mate. When I've booked on there it hasn't mattered if I end up getting a transpennine express train or arriva on the day. Sometimes train companies can get weird about that. Enjoy the match!

Also read that Liverpool has cut short Becks (left back) loan spell from Dundee. Signals to me that he'll provide cover for Gomez until robbo is up to speed.

Yeah, what Ed025 said, I'm of the understanding Liverpool have requested the first few games to be played away from home in order to complete the extension work.

AJH, ignore some of the childish replies. I don't often post but read loads and have seen you before so know you're not here to gloat etc but to start a discussion and talk football. This page has become more and more closed book over recent years. It's either I'm right and you're wrong 100% or it turns into schoolyard stuff. So please don't be deterred from future discussions.

It's interesting to hear your take on the season and next year predictions. I think United may have an improved few years with players like Casamero, Varane and Eriksson but also need to invest for the future as they are getting older, a problem Liverpool find themselves in now. Replacing good players is not easy and the current good older players will only deteriorate/ have to sit out more games to recover.

I agree though, United's finishing has been so poor. One good goalscorer who also does the hard yards and you'd win a lot more games.

I think Liverpool's issue has been identity. I don't know their style anymore or what a Liverpool goal looks like. It used to be heavy metal, speed and counter and high press. Then we tried to control the game more with Thiago like signings. Then it didn't work so tried this new inverted fullback nonesense that everyone is trying. All while buying players for different systems and playing styles. It feels to me like square pegs, round holes. If we get a go back to simple football and overpowering teams then I think we'll be better off but we need to make decisions in the transfer market and stick to them. If we have another poor transfer market then I can see us struggling again.
