Romano reporting Bellingham to Real Madrid almost done and dusted, so that puts that one to bed, seemingly. Presume LFC knew this was in the works and the reason they have been exploring other options. Concresces the likely list of targets as described; thanks Eds!

If any good can come of it, hopefully it means certain people inside the club can learn from this absolute farce and never chase one player in such an idiotic way again.

2.) 03 May 2023 14:43:15
The owners are far from the worst but the greedy yanks need to invest if they value the club at over 4b we had a genuine world class kid wanting to join and we walked away after 2 years.

3.) 03 May 2023 14:44:33
Looking like Mac Allister, Ugarte and Mount are the top 3 targets as it stands.

4.) 03 May 2023 14:57:35
Oh well, at least he is not going to other english team. Everyone can move on from this now.

5.) 03 May 2023 15:30:30
Written off a full season and champions league for zip all ? embarrassing.

6.) 03 May 2023 15:32:03
Well duh. Been saying for ages we would never be involved. I don’t know what’s worse actually wasting transfer windows on a transfer that was never going to happen or the fans gullible enough to think it would ever happen. SMH.

7.) 03 May 2023 15:34:10
To be honest I am relieved Bellingham is going to Madrid. its been a huge distraction and there plenty of talent out there for us. I admit I fell for the cringey man crush for JB but glad to move on. Realistically we can now sign 3 midfielders instead of one. Imagine we signed him and he done his ACL.

8.) 03 May 2023 15:40:55
Chance of more trophies and playing in the sun with a Mediterranean diet and lifestyle .
He would be bonkers not to go Madrid .

9.) 03 May 2023 15:41:50
And stop tapping up players!

10.) 03 May 2023 16:07:38
Chasing two midfielders and getting neither at the expense of champions league qualification and a league title push is nothing short of reckless from whoever’s decision is was. But what do they care. The fans are their last thought. It’s a business and we would all do well to remember that. There’s no love or passion from FSG. Big money owners only care about the bottom line. Chelsea and Everton should serve as a cautionary tale.

11.) 03 May 2023 16:05:18
Has the fat lady finally sung then, Eds?

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware that anything has changed with respect to Liverpool.}

12.) 03 May 2023 16:21:06
At least it can't be wheeled out by James Pearce and Paul Gorst as an excuse for another summer of poor investment because we're waiting for 'next year'

13.) 03 May 2023 16:22:24
Poor old Jude Nkunku, always the bridesmaid that lad.

14.) 03 May 2023 16:23:53
The numbers being quoted look very much like the ones you had said that Real had put aside for Jude, Ed.

{Ed002's Note - I would expect so - that is what the put on the table when discussing the player with BD some weeks ago.}

15.) 03 May 2023 16:42:00
I'll live victor, rather reach for the stars and be wrong than be a negative t#@t so you can say you were right??.

16.) 03 May 2023 18:15:22
Not being negative, just realistic. As long as FSG are in charge we’re more likely to go for the likes of Renato Sanches and Conor Gallagher because they’re cheap. We’ll only buy top class when we sell someone with a big price on their head. There’s absolutely no reason to think FSG are going to sanction the level of spending needed to fix the mess we’re in. It’ll probably be the same £50/ 60m plus sales.

17.) 03 May 2023 18:24:18
Ah but he wasn’t right about Traore, isn’t that right Victor? Law of averages and all that ??.

18.) 03 May 2023 18:53:51
Agreed vv mate. Owners area shambles. Bargain basement hunters. Going backwards fast.

19.) 03 May 2023 19:36:39
“Farce”, “embarrassing”, “reckless”, “shambles”. Listen to yourselves, you sound like four year olds in a toy shop.

The lad represents the right player at the wrong price.

We buy one first team player, we don’t resolve anywhere near the problems we’ve had this season. We use the money to buy three, maybe four, first team squad players we solve a lot more problems.

I just can’t wait for July.

20.) 03 May 2023 19:38:04
Fsg are not the richest but far from the worse. People forget we thought we were losing mane and salah and replacing them with Sarr and Traore. But instead moved on a washed up moody Mane, kept Salah and signed Diaz (class), beat United to Nunez' signature and got Gakpo out of nowhere.

21.) 03 May 2023 20:13:46
Was Darwin cheap Viktor?

22.) 03 May 2023 20:30:50
I don't recall reading anything official from the club that they'd made an offer of any kind for Bellingham. So all that folks are going on is rumours.
But hey it's another opportunity to express that faux outrage.
WDW's assessment is spot on, as always.

23.) 03 May 2023 21:07:05
West Derby, why would it have to be just jude? I'm not the biggest critic of fsg but they're not paupers, they're worth at least 8bn so they could put bit of their own money in, it's not like they won't get it back in abundance when they sell. No one expects city or Chelsea type spending but what has gone on last few windows was criminal and we reaping the fruits now.

24.) 03 May 2023 22:03:40
Not really cheap at £65m, Irish, though the total estimated cost of Haaland puts that in the shade, but it’s entirely fair to say that all of Balotelli, Arthur, Kabak, Davies, Caulker were all cheap attempts at quick fixes which failed miserably.

Anyone thinking FSG are going to spend big to fix the glaring deficiencies in our squad are in for disappointment. It’ll be bargain basement stuff, and I suspect there’ll be some big names being sold to make funds as £50/ 60m isn’t going to cut it.

I can genuinely see us going for freebies like Tielemans and Rabiot and cheap players like Renato Sanches and Conor Gallagher. Next season isn’t likely to be much different than this one if that’s the case, only without being pumped by Real Madrid again.

25.) 03 May 2023 22:06:32
Well considering Jude’s price hasn’t changed. Why didn’t we just sign the midfielders two years ago when we needed them?

26.) 03 May 2023 22:17:07
Port Red there is a difference between FSG and Liverpool FC.

Liverpool is an asset owned by FSG, along with a number of other assets with the Boston Red Sox being another well known asset.

FSG are constrained in the funds they can ‘give’ to Liverpool but they also have other assets that require funding.

FSG are, relatively speaking, not poor but they are not a state backed bottomless pit of money.

If you ignore state backed City, the peculiar going on at Chelsea, and to a lesser extent United, we are by no means cheapskates.

Anyway, look at Forest and their purchases at the start of the season and Chelsea with the half a billion ~ and is it just me who thinks that’s an obscene amount of money to spend when we have nurses queueing up at food banks? Spending vast amounts doesn’t really equate to success at all, well, at least not in the real world.

27.) 03 May 2023 22:53:17
This chat amuses me, the problems the mess we’re in, FSG not spending enough. First let’s start with gillet and hicks, remember them? What a world away from that we are. Second remember Woy Hodgson’s tenure? My god he can make football boring and drag out a 1-0 finish mid table and think what’s the point. So I think FSG have done a decent job winning the prem champions league etc. last season these same players were targeting an unprecedented trophy haul so why would you change the whole squad quality over quantity. Some dead wood needs clearing Nabby has been poor, Ox I feel sorry for because he was starting to have a great run until he got injured now he’s mostly injured. And as a team we’ve lost legs in cm but Jones is starting to step up and he looks decent which is good. Goes to show you don’t need to spend £120m on one player every year to build a squad. Missing a centre back a right back and a cm. Trent in cm would be awesome next season. We need a strong cdm fabinho arguably best in the world last season very average this season. With Trent and a goal scoring midfielder, miss wijnuldum hugely under rated player.

Not all doom and gloom 5th in a difficult season I remember worse. Strong attack for next season jota Diaz Salah Nunez gakpo goals in there. 3 players cdm rb cb konate to clumsy for me.

28.) 03 May 2023 23:56:09
88 million for Jude wasn't it?

29.) 04 May 2023 10:14:37
Jude has the potential to be world class, a once in a generation type midfielder, future England captain etc. For the club not to meet the asking price after the success Klopp has provided during his time and knowing he’s a Liverpool fan is so disappointing, I’d even call it bad business, poor mismanagement even. Some times you have to break the transfer strategy and understand that a player of his potential and hunger to play for the team he supported warrants it.

{Ed025's Note - but the money wanted by dortmund is ridiculous Ecogsi. I don’t blame Liverpool for swerving him mate. You can get 3 or 4 quality players in for that and although I thing Jude is excellent he is still young and anything can happen in football..

30.) 04 May 2023 14:24:26
Agree we can buy 3-4 quality players for the same money but I’d rather buy Jude, get rid of keita, ox, Milner etc to fund 1 other midfielder. Or is the point I’m missing that the club just won’t spend what’s needed?

31.) 04 May 2023 16:07:32
We can buy 3/ 4 quality players for 88m pounds? You wouldn't 3/ 4 quality players for 130m in today's market,

Hi Eds

(Firstly, as this is my first question, I'd like to preface it with my gratitude for all your generous hard work. )

According to my searching, Gnabry is not looking like a likely addition - but if he were to join, am I right in thinking he'd count as HG for PL purposes (though not for CL)? If that is correct, IYO do you think it affects the club's interest in a significant way? (Would they pay a premium/ take him over a sightless better fit etc? ) I know that's pure conjecture but you are in a better position to suppose than no-nothings like me.

LifelongPlastic

{Ed002's Note - Serge Gnabry (RW/LW) Seems to fail to settle at any club and is not open to signing a new contract without a significant increase in salary, and it is his very significant financial demands that are proving to be a problem. Barcelona have him on their list of options, but they are going to have to balance summer transfers carefully and his wage demands will be an issue, so they can be discounted. The wages are less of a problem for Juventus where tax laws are beneficial. Real Madrid consider him an option to Mbappe as they look to shake up their wingers, but there are others ahead of him on their list, but the player wants to move to Madrid. Versatile enough to be considered a Martial replacement at Manchester United and on the list for Liverpool as a potential Salah replacement - but neither would want to break the bank for him and not being in the CL will end any vague interest Manchester United have. Has been offered to Chelsea and PSG by his agent, but both see the wage demands as far too high. Although interested, a return to Arsenal does not make sense for the player and with no Champions League, and huge costs it seems less likely.

1.) 10 Jun 2022 20:46:08
If PSG and Chelsea are baulking at his wage demands then there's absolutely no chance he ends up with us.

2.) 10 Jun 2022 21:34:53
If he doesn't sign a new contract Bowen will be 1st choice to replace Salah next summer. I don't see a better HG choice plus the club has a good relationship with his agent. If he signs a new contract cost will make it very unlikely.

3.) 10 Jun 2022 22:06:34
If Bowen doesn’t score as many goals or have a good season next year then perhaps he is on the decline also.

4.) 10 Jun 2022 23:19:58
On the decline?

He’s mid twenties off the back of his breakthrough season.

5.) 10 Jun 2022 23:29:20
NK with your username I thought you would have got sarcasm.

6.) 11 Jun 2022 04:49:07
Gnabry is just a fit ox.

7.) 11 Jun 2022 06:19:18
Gnabry comes across as an individual with a bit of baggage, and we should stay off!

8.) 11 Jun 2022 08:17:13
Not mad about his antics either.

9.) 11 Jun 2022 09:22:36
Really think gnabry would be a big flop back in the prem again. I'd stay well clear.

10.) 11 Jun 2022 12:51:10
I think with the right manager, the right club he’d be amazing. Would really like to see him at the club. Ability wise he’s a cracking player.

11.) 11 Jun 2022 13:53:22
I’m not a big fan, I was just looking for clarification re HG status.

Thanks for the swift reply Ed.

12.) 11 Jun 2022 14:17:39
Gnabry is a good player but wants elite player wages. More so on a free with likely massive signing on fee. Feel his wages will rule him out in the end. FSG are prepared to pay players well if they perform over a few years but rarely from the off.

Horrible takes. He’s a great player. Can do a bit of everything. We don’t need him, but he’ll do really well wherever he goes. The general negativity on here sometimes - towards our own players, and others - is exasperating.

LifelongPlastic

{Ed001's Note - he really isn't great though is he? Decent lower half Prem player, but far from a great player. He can't pass and lacks vision, his touch is not the best either. In fact his overall technique is not the best. Which is why he is better off in a lower half team that will not have a lot of the ball and he can use his best attributes, which are mobility and workrate, to chase and harry the opposition into mistakes.}

Just because he hadn’t worked/ fit at City doesn’t mean he couldn’t be class in another team/ system. Happens a lot. Have no strong opinion on the fella, but that’s such overly-simplistic reductionism that it borders on nonsense.
