Some of the high profile departures that I can remember over the years:

Rush
McManaman
Fowler
Owen
Torres
Suarez

Common to all them is that I believe they played their best football with the Reds. I can't think of too many that have gone on to be better players, perhaps Beardsley and Alonso, but I would argue they maintained a level of brilliance throughout. Can anyone think of players that have stepped up after leaving the club?

Sterling
Mascherano
Alonso.

2.) 07 Jan 2018 21:23:01
Tbf I would say Alonso did.
He was absolutely excellent for us but went on to be World-class level.

3.) 07 Jan 2018 21:23:06
Mcmanaman would champions league and I think we La Ligas. I’m not sure what you mean with Beardsley though. Suarez has also won champions league and La Ligas.

4.) 07 Jan 2018 21:24:23
I certainly think Suarez stepped up from being a world class player to being the best striker in the world after he left us for Barca, slipping this year with his injuries though. Can’t argue that Sterling has stepped up his game in terms of his end product as well.

5.) 07 Jan 2018 21:35:09
Agree with Sterling, and perhaps Alonso did get even better. However I do think Suarez was better for us, completely relished being the main man rather than in Messi's shadow.

Jonesred, I was thinking of improvements in performance and footballing skills, rather than number of honours acheived - many have gone on to win more, not particularly difficult with our recent history.

6.) 07 Jan 2018 21:40:26
I’d still say Beardsley played better for us than Everton.

7.) 07 Jan 2018 21:43:33
Sterling, Kuyt, Arbeloa, Mascherano, Insua, Mikel San Jose to name a few.

8.) 07 Jan 2018 21:43:37
Macca, Sterling, Suarez and Alonso got better and won things or will win things (Sterling) . The others like Torres declined enormously.

9.) 07 Jan 2018 21:44:29
Beardsley did perform better for us than Everton, but the fact was that he was sold far too early.

10.) 07 Jan 2018 21:46:11
Suarez has been brilliant for Barca.

11.) 07 Jan 2018 21:55:34
Suarez literally scored his 132nd goal for Barcelona today. his career strike rate is pure madness.

{Ed025's Note - pure madness being the operative word.. :)

My first post here- trying to find some therapy by venting:
For me the biggest single disappointment from yesterday was to see the team crumble after the first 60 seconds. Leicester came out aggressively and put in some meaty challenges and it looked like we had absolutely no answer to it, subsequently the team just wilted from there- typified by Mane who got a little knock and then decided it was too much and went missing.
You can talk about tactics, positions, lack of quality but to not match the opposition's desire and aggression is so depressing. Can't help but think the likes of Suarez, Gerrard, Kuyt, Carra, Didi would not have allowed that kind of performance to happen.
I implore the owners/ transfer committee to put "character" before "potential" when they are looking at bringing in players in the summer, we are way too nice and lacking in a bit of nastiness to win anything.

Mister_T

{Ed002's Note - The problem is a manager/coach who has put the team through another gruelling pre-season when the had a good opportunity for a break. I appreciate that Klipperty is an infectious character but he remains far from being a good coach. But the Liverpool fans all have the hots for him and can't see that.}

1.) 28 Feb 2017 10:01:45
Not trying to be an arse, legit question, has Klopp done something to you personally ed to make you dislike him so much?

{Ed002's Note - I don't dislike Klipperty at all, he is a decent guy but the Liverpool fans see more in him as a coach than there really is. They all want him to have year after year of transition. Other clubs change coaches and get on with it - Liverpool supporters use it as an excuse to start yet another period of transition. But no one sees that - it is of course Rodgers team and when he has his own team Liverpool will be winning the league year in and year out. You are struggling to see my point about his abilities and his failure to win anything for years (since being found out) and having no Plan B and seeing it as somethin g personal. It isn't. It was an incredibly stupid thing to do to force a "pre-season" on the players and it has completely back fire - as it was always going to. Muscle injuries, tiredness, and a loss. World class coach - no - far from it.}

2.) 28 Feb 2017 10:29:11
Spot on. i've reached a point where i don't even care if they're exceptional footballers i just want character. I just want them to show the same emotions us fans feel when they're on the pitch, and not be emotionless robots who don't care. At this point i have no pride or ability to identify with my team anymore. I cannot see this run ending.

Thanks for the reply ed02. Why do you think you and ed01 have such different opinions on this topic?

Sharkopod with the two of you debating?

{Ed002's Note - Ed001 is still in transition.}

4.) 28 Feb 2017 12:19:18
Ed001 and Ed002 need to talk to each other more. One is saying that the camp in Spain had no impact on us, while the other one is mentioning is at the core reason for our poor performance. One of the Eds has to be wrong here or am I missing something?

{Ed002's Note - So did the players all come back fully fit or were there further muscle injuries? But at least they came back and thrashed Leicester.}

5.) 28 Feb 2017 14:16:51
They are earning a wage which is good enough for themselves to get motivated.

6.) 28 Feb 2017 14:38:39
This is what some BVB fans had to say about klopp and our current form.

Thank you very much for this article, ED001 - I always enjoy reading your perspective on players and the game in general.

You mention how Jota’s understanding of the game needs to improve, do you think this could be linked to a lack of vision? My impression when watching him has always been that he is a head down player, as if he has blinkers on like a race horse. Whilst excellent at making the odd slalom run into the box, or instinctively finishing off a move with a goal, you very rarely see him getting his head up and spreading the play around the field (in contrast to Diaz, for example, when playing in the same position) . Do you think that maybe a lack of vision could be one of the reason he struggles with link up play, giving the ball away, or in the wrong position defensively?

I agree with you that he is incredibly frustrating at times, and previously, this has led me to think he doesn’t fit in with the team and perhaps we should move him on. However, I’ve changed my opinion over time - his ability to find a goal, the work ethic you mention and actually his leadership have been really endearing. Despite his flaws (which I can’t see ever changing), I now believe he’s a excellent squad player for us, and with those positive qualities, dare I say indispensable?

Mister_T

{Ed001's Note - yes, his lack of vision is very much an issue, I think.}

Ed001, what are your reservations from what you have seen of Nunez? Thanks.

Mister_T

{Ed001's Note - intelligence and first touch. But I saw him up against us, so it was a big step up in quality for him from what he had been facing on a regular basis. He certainly didn't look a bad player, just didn't do enough to convince me of him. I would want to watch a lot more before I would make a decision on him myself, as you can't judge a player on just 2 appearances imo.}

Ed0666, if I didn’t support India in the cricket my family would have disowned me, the same is now true for my two boys! On England, a few of my buddies and I used to follow the team everywhere enthusiastically with some sort false sense of patriotism - France 98, Portugal 04, Germany 06 etc - there were some great moments but other things would leave us feeling more and more dispirited, we realised we were never really wanted or welcome following the national team. Now in my early 40s I find myself rooting for the ‘other’ team every time, was genuinely gutted yesterday the Scots didn’t manage to find a goal!

Glad to say I’ve never felt that following The Reds, my banner would be - Woolback Indian Scouse - Not English!

Mister_T

{Ed0666's Note - crazy ain’t it when you suffer from racism how that resonates and manifests in other strata of you’re life. You were hurt so much by the rejection you felt being an England supporter now you want England to lose. Unfortunately I’ve heard this story so many times. Don’t worry mate many many scousers dont cate for the national team club before country.

Perhaps we could revive “the best midfield in the world” song for our attackers - Mo, Sadio, Firmino, Minamino and Jo-ta.

I have zero talent in putting something like that together, however.

I feel the pain!

It’s my boy’s birthday next weekend and I’m trying to justify £85 for a little T-shirt. and that’s before numbers and name etc.

The things you do for your team (and family) . they have us by the short and curlies!
