Hey Ed’s, hope you’re all traveling well. Just wanted to ask a question in terms of third choice keepers. Are we still actively looking to bring someone (veteran keeper) in for that role? I’ve read that Andy Lonergan joined up with us on pre-season and we have apparent interest in Tom Heaton according to links, but have we looked at anyone else? Thanks heaps for your time and effort.

SkySaleh

{Ed002's Note - Andy Lonergan would be a great choice and from those who know him, he is apparently a good guy. Tom Heaton has miles left in him and if SM were to go may well be a very good option.}

1.) 26 Jul 2019 19:22:51
Due to family, I keep an eye out for Preston and have been to many games. He's obviously not a spring chicken anymore, but Andy Lonergan was a great keeper for PNE and was also apparently a great personality in the dressing room. At the tender age of 35, I think he's a great option for our 3rd choice keeper.

2.) 26 Jul 2019 20:13:12
Sounds like a good guy.

If Ed 002 says it’s a good choice that would do for me.

Plus Epic Potato has vouched for him.

All good it seems.

3.) 26 Jul 2019 20:47:54
Heaton is an upgrade on mignolet, and allows the younger keepers to go on loan of mignolet leaves. With Heaton not being first choice at Burnley, seems like a good idea.

4.) 26 Jul 2019 21:49:50
I agree with Ed002. Heaton is a decent choice. I don’t know much of Lonergan, other than he acquitted himself very well the day. I’d be happy with either as an experienced number 2.

5.) 26 Jul 2019 22:17:38
I actually don't think Heaton is an upgrade on Mignolet. He's a good shot stopper, but his ball play and anticipation off the line are nowhere near Simon's level.

He may have been a good keeper for Burnley, but Liverpool require a different kind of keeper that is good with the ball and acts as a kind of sweeper. Sure, Mignolet isn't the best at this but he has learn't to bring it into his game and in that respect is far ahead of Heaton.

6.) 26 Jul 2019 23:07:40
Heaton would be a great no2 but I doubt he wants to be a no2.
He fought to win the first team shirt at Burnley.

7.) 26 Jul 2019 23:12:35
Sorry but Mignolet makes far too many errors to be relied upon, and given that the primary purpose of a goalkeeper is to stop the ball going into the goal, I’d rather have a competent keeper like Heaton than Mignolet, who gifts a soft goal almost every game.

8.) 27 Jul 2019 07:50:15
I am with 6times on this one.
Mignolet fills me with no confidence at all! Every time he is on the pitch you feel like an error could happen at any moment.

9.) 27 Jul 2019 08:22:42
We will not win a cup if Mignolet keeps playing.

10.) 27 Jul 2019 09:59:49
Heaton is a really good keeper, before he got injured a couple of seasons ago, he should've been starting for England. Certainly wouldn't mind him as backup/ competition.

11.) 27 Jul 2019 10:55:56
Epic potato, have you watched Mignolet? He’s nowhere near good enough and is a mistake waiting to happen.

12.) 27 Jul 2019 11:39:14
OK, I may have over-emphasised and shouldn't have used words such as "far better". It's easier to look good as a keeper when you have plenty of shots being fired at you. At Burnley, Heaton had a lot of work to do.

It was the same with Mignolet when he was at Sunderland. He had a lot of saves to make each game and when we signed him, I thought we were getting one hell of a keeper.

You don't know how well a keeper will perform in a top team when they don't have a lot to do all game. There's plenty examples over the years of a keeper looking great at a lower club but failing to make the grade once they've stepped up.

13.) 27 Jul 2019 11:47:09
I disagree with you on Mignolet, Epic. My recollections of him at Sunderland was although yes he faced a lot of shots, he also let in soft goals and was poor on crosses. Which is why I could never understand what our scouts had seen in him.

14.) 27 Jul 2019 18:39:11
It "should" be irrelevant anyway. If Tom Heaton has anything competitive about him, he wouldn't want to be backup for who is probably the world's best goalkeeper and "should" play every game. It simply doesn't come down to healthy competition. Alisson isn't going to lose his place. Unlike when we had Migs and Karius fighting to be No. 1.

Considering how good Alisson is, and will more than likely play every game, I'd be happy for our veteran be the backup keeper and for the third choice go to a youngster. Similar to how Caballero has been for City and Chelsea.

15.) 27 Jul 2019 21:35:53
The lad from Preston looks competent and a lot of people say good things about him. He’d do a good job as far as I’m concerned.

16.) 28 Jul 2019 12:18:04
6Times, I've stated on another thread that I've PNE fans in my family and saw Andy Lonergan play plenty of times. He was a cracking keeper for Preston. I'd be more than happy for him to be number two and let Mignolet get first team football elsewhere.

An international goalkeeper at the age of 31 should be playing somewhere where he would be 1st choice.

11 Jul 2019 06:50:17
Hey Ed’s, just a quick one. Do you see Harry Wilson in Liverpool’s long term plans? Has he done enough on loan to be given a chance this upcoming season with us? Or are we actively looking for a sale or loan? Thanks for all the good work guys.

SkySaleh

{Ed001's Note - this has been said a hundred times already mate, he is for sale. He doesn't work hard enough off the ball.}

1.) 11 Jul 2019 07:32:16
Thanks Ed001, didn’t see the question before mate, sorry for asking again. Do you still see us going in for an attacking player that can play a versatile attacking role? Thanks for your time Ed.

{Ed001's Note - yes mate, still looking.}

2.) 11 Jul 2019 08:21:55
Yeah and you can't really teach that if he doesn't have it in his gut.

Btw I watched Cornet in Lyon vs Man City last night and oh yes I'll have me some of that.

3.) 11 Jul 2019 09:43:43
with the club pricing him out of a move at the moment for an outright sale, do you think we may see him heading out on loan again?

4.) 11 Jul 2019 10:03:18
Why do we always put such a high value that no one is willing to pay on players like Wilson?

Surely the price can be dropped with some sort of clause in the contract that if said team sells him on we get a cut?

5.) 11 Jul 2019 10:33:33
Hi ED01,
You have mentioned that klopp by poeple inside LFC to give him a chance? So it's klopp's and coaching stuff decision to put him up for sale?

{Ed001's Note - yes.}

6.) 11 Jul 2019 11:48:28
Eds1 when you say still looking for an versatile attacking midfield. are we actually still scouting or we know our top 5 targets and it’s a case of brokering a deal with one of them.

{Ed001's Note - scouting will always go on, even when a list of choices has been made.}

7.) 11 Jul 2019 12:01:09
Have you any insight into how Wilson’s attitude is with improving to be a LFC player? Is he keen to work within Klopps way and work harder off the ball or is he another quality kid turned brat that thinks he’s made it already so doesn’t have to?

I was hoping he’d get a chance and grab it. Getting a bit tired of hearing about these great players in our youth teams that seem to be the answer then actually aren’t even close. Ibe, Kent, Ojo now possibly Wilson.

I completely understand why there’s such a split with fans either wanting to splash cash or give youth their chance.

{Ed001's Note - he had a few issues when he was younger after getting loads of hype. While he knuckled down a bit to a degree, it is unlikely he will ever be suited to Klopp's way of playing.}

8.) 11 Jul 2019 12:02:51
JT the club has done well selling players for the price they believe is right. Look at players like Solanke. It was reported that we got 19 mil for him. If that was the case 25 mil for Wilson isn't overpriced.

9.) 11 Jul 2019 12:21:34
Still looking Ed001, anyone new you are aware of mate or nothing outside of the usual few mentioned on here?

{Ed001's Note - no mate nothing new.}

10.) 11 Jul 2019 15:38:25
@JT

I don't think that we do overprice our players.

Solanke, Ibe, Ings, Ward etc have all been sold for considerable sums which represent much better business than years gone by where we would be making considerable losses on sales.

Well done Liverpool transfer team!

11.) 11 Jul 2019 16:14:37
Wilson is a very talented young footballer he just is unlikely to suit Liverpool high intensity style of play. Wonder how he compared to the likes of Milner and Lallana in the pre season runs.
He will suit other teams tho and do very well for them even if he doesn't adjust his style of play/ effort off the ball.
So just because he likely won't make at Liverpool doesn't mean he isn't worth a good price. suso may be a sort of example of having success playing a different style of footbaal.

12.) 11 Jul 2019 22:27:30
Sorry to push the question but is it possible Lampard told him not to track back as his talents lay further forward, or were Derby frustrated with his efforts defensively?

{Ed001's Note - Derby played a different type of game, your question left out other possible answers.}

13.) 12 Jul 2019 04:48:51
Work ethic off the ball can be encouraged and its value can be taught. Willfully choosing not to do it is a different problem altogether. Attitude is as important as talent. If this truly is the sole problem for Wilson, it's time to move on.

14.) 12 Jul 2019 19:26:31
I know it was only a preseason game against Tranmere, but Wilson was not the highlight feature. Kent looked just as good if not better when they were on the pitch together. Ryan Kent didn't half put a shift in.

15.) 12 Jul 2019 20:30:17
Wilson did put a shift in last season at Derby. Sometimes the penny does drop. I hope he uses pre season to work his way into Klopp’s plans as there is a very good footballer there that just needs coaxing out.

16.) 13 Jul 2019 05:38:10
I don't think it's necessarily as simple to just say he doesn't have the work rate. It's just his overall style doesn't fit well for us, lack of pace and aggression on and off the ball, he not suited to a high tempo running team. A very good player with hopefully a bright future but he needs the right team to suit his play.

The likes of riquelme, deco, sneijder, all star players in the right side but would never suit us under klopp due to playing style.

17.) 13 Jul 2019 12:31:14
Suppose changing of managers for the first team really affects the players in the youth system as playing styles vary so much does the managers style filter through the youth teams or are they managed independently of the senior team?

I wouldn’t be against making a move for Bowen at all, looks a real tidy player who also seems to be very versatile. Thoughts on him as a player ed1?

SkySaleh

{Ed001's Note - he reminds me of Kuyt, works his arse off and can always pop up with a goal.}

1.) 16 Aug 2021 04:49:21
Just watched the highlights of the game and a profile of the player in general. Seems to be a Klopp type of player; high work rate, offensive enough, tracks back enough, not spectacularly gifted but makes full use of what skill he has.

2.) 16 Aug 2021 15:08:04
That’s exactly what I was thinking ArAy.

07 Aug 2021 16:19:04
Hey Ed’s, hope all is well.
Just curious to know if there’s any more podcasts in the works for the near future? I used to love listening to them, and I don’t think I’d be alone in saying that.
Hope you all have a great day!

SkySaleh

{Ed025's Note - yes mate very shortly..

1.) 07 Aug 2021 22:10:22
Awesome! Enjoy your day ed25.

{Ed025's Note - you too mate..

13 Dec 2019 11:36:36
Klopp signs new deal. my god made my day!

SkySaleh

1.) 13 Dec 2019 11:46:32
Made up about this! Best news in ages!

2.) 13 Dec 2019 12:57:33
A Ray of sunshine on a cloudy, rainy, sh##y day. I don't think it's a coincidence that stevie has just signed a new 4 Yr deal. People will say I'm a conspiracy theorist, but I don't care. The job he wants is Liverpool and he knows what is going on there before the press do. One day klopp will leave, it'll be horrible. But the thought of Gerrard coming home will make it bearable for me.

3.) 13 Dec 2019 14:59:14
Stevie has a long way to go before he can be considered in Klopps bracket. As someone has already pointed out he is able to turn ok players into arguably the best in the world in their positions.

I knew klopp was good from his time in Dortmund but he has proved if you get a world class manager you don't need a team of ready made world class players to compete for the top honours.

4.) 13 Dec 2019 15:14:32
When Klopp does eventually leave it will be horrible.
But I wouldn't automatically assume Gerrard will take his place as manager.
That would be a backward step for me and certainly wouldn't make it bearable.
Anyway let's just enjoy Klopp while we've got him.

5.) 13 Dec 2019 17:38:29
Didn’t you know this has been the plan all along. Give Gerrard enough time to develop into the next Liverpool manager. Thank you rangers for having him until we are ready.

6.) 13 Dec 2019 23:56:27
Klopp one more year with Gerrard maybe for transition?

30 Oct 2019 07:48:26
Hey Ed001, have you ever looked into getting a discord going for the readers and the Ed’s? Just a thought.

SkySaleh

{Ed001's Note - why would we want to do that?}

1.) 30 Oct 2019 10:57:36
Maybe he meant a disco.

2.) 30 Oct 2019 11:48:42
Most ridiculous suggestion I've ever seen on here. Why would the Ed's want to lose all their website hits to another platform?

3.) 30 Oct 2019 14:43:22
Jeez, calm down Plain bread. I realize how stupid it sounds now, but it was just a thought I had at the time, didn’t want to cause any trouble by it. No need to bite my head off.

4.) 31 Oct 2019 17:52:07
Tbf in terms of having the community interacting with each other, pretty decent idea. Though also seems like the website does the job!

5.) 31 Oct 2019 21:44:00
That’s kinda what I was getting at alistairLPFC, but if it’s going to take any sort of prestige away from this website, I didn’t mean it like that. Have a good day mate.

09 Aug 2019 17:44:55
Hey ed001, loving the new podcasts and ask the Ed section, great work mate, please keep them up! Any chance we can get a player profile on John McGinn? Thanks a lot mate.

SkySaleh

{Ed001's Note - McGinn is on the list mate.}

1.) 09 Aug 2019 17:59:13
Mcginn going to be the darkhorse this season.

2.) 09 Aug 2019 18:08:03
Talksport just been bigging up Mcginn and especially Grealish. Interesting to see how both do with the step up this year. From an outsider point of view.

Nice little jab there Ed, you’re quite partial to those. I’m pretty happy with the championship winning midfielders we have right now, so I guess we’ll have to look at tapping up a center back that Klopp so desperately wants?
