Anyone else think we look more solid with matip in the team? Our defence was poor last night. Against a better team we would of been in trouble.
{Ed047's Note - first game of the season, Gomez has also been out for a while, when up and running he is a Rolls Royce for me where as Matip is maybe an Audi A3.

I also think when Gomez plays because of his pace our defence plays a a little bit higher up obviously leaving more space in behind, it will take a little bit of time to get fully up to speed.

Matip been brilliant it will be a travesty if he loses his place to Gomez just because he is fit again. We looked more composed when he came on in charity shield. Matip ‘s last two competitive games sets up goal in champions league final and score in charity shield. Give the guy the credit he deserves definitely starts for me.

With you there, Ed01. People forget that we did not come out flying out of the trps either last season in terms of fluidity even tho we won our first 7 games. It's the first game of the season and it is always part of the process to come out a bit rusty and out of synch at times as it takes at least 4 games for the team to gel.
The good thing is that while you are getting the rust off, you make sure you are winning your games and that is what we did and should have won by a lot more. IMO, that game could have ended, 7-3 if all chances were taken. On to the Super Cup vs Chelsea in Istanbul, our backyard.
{Ed001's Note - we never ever have played well early season. The pre-season is about getting fit, the first 6 matches or so of the season are about getting the team match fit. Then you have another 4 or 5 to build team play etc.}

There’s no doubting that Gomez has the higher potential and last season him and VVD did look good together. But there’s also no denying that Matip has earned his place in the team with his performances and him and VVD has developed a very good understanding. I think Matip can feel very hard done by to be dropped. But on the positive side it shows we have a more than capable centre half waiting in the wings.

Henderson was easily the best player on the pitch yesterday imo. but of course someone wants to bench him for Arnold who has played half a game at CM in his entire 1st team career.

Personally thought it was Trent who was the weakest link last night, very lax with some of his passing. Early days in the season though so hopefully snaps out of it soon.

It may be harsh on matip to lose his place but Gomez certainly deserves to start no doubt. First half of the season we were much stronger in defence with him in there, he's a better option to complement VVD and his pace can be crucial on the right to help when Trent gets caught out of position. With matip playing we would need to play a slightly deeper line but with Gomez we could play high and push aggressively up on Norwich. The more Gomez and Trent play together the stronger their defensive partnership will get. Up until the start of last season they rarely if never played together as Gomez previously was used in RB in place of Trent. They've only probably got 20 odd games played together but can hopefully spend 10 years as first choice for club and country.
What's great though is that matips big improvement means Gomez knows he needs to keep performance levels consistently high and that we have competition to keep those players on their toes. Trent will know that if he plays poorly for a spell then Gomez can play RB and matip slot in. It's nice to finally have a strong Liverpool defence with high performing competition for places. The fact our 4th choice CB is being linked with 25 mil moves to top clubs in his 30s and couldn't even make our bench shows we are strong at CB.

I think Wilson looks decent, he deserves a chance in my opinion, just because the Ed's have their doubts doesn't always mean its correct. After all, there were doubts about VVD and he has been immense.

Dont get that, origi never plays that well when he starts and the other lad hasn't had much experience so makes no sense. As ed said why change a winning team.
