Hi Ed's, I read something online last night regarding Mario Goetze being available on a free this summer. Not sure he's gotten many chances this season at dortmund but I hear Klopp and him have remained close friends. I was wondering if you think he would be a decent signing especially on a free if Shaqiri or Lallana leave. At 27 he still has a lot to offer in my opinion but his wages could be a factor to stay clear.
Thanks.

Vinny007

{Ed002's Note - Mario Goetze (S/AM) is out of contract in the summer but he has spent a reasonable time playing this season as a CF - even though he is at loggerheads with the club and being a bit of a bitch about a new contract. He would not be a replacement for Shakiri or Lallana. I would be surprised if Liverpool see him as the way forward. There was a general enquiry from Herta Berlin which might provide one option for him - else he may want to look at the MLS.}

we simply don't need Mario Goetze at Liverpool.
That ship has long since sailed.

2.) 09 Jan 2020 18:27:59
just because they have history, doesn't mean at all that there's a possibility of a reunion. here's klopp quoted in the echo in december:

"I never kept a player in a squad because I liked him so much - that's just the professional part of football. You need the right players around and players need the right club. Sometimes it can be a win-win situation, he moves on and gets happy again and everything is fine. "

i agree, kingkenny, the ship sailed long ago.

I was thinking about him recently actually when I saw he will be a free agent. His role lately has often been in that deep forward position similar to areas firmino operates. I think it would be intriguing as he knows this stage of his career he can only take a step down and if he had the chance to work under klopp where nothing except hard work and a good attitude will be tolerated he might be capable of lifting his game. A free transfer with a 2/ 3 contract would be worth the gamble no doubt I feel. Lallanas on a huge wage that will likely be freed up and sturridge was earning more too to do little.

I think it may depend on how minamino contributes to determine of gotze would be useful or not and also whatever klopp feels about his personality but from the outside looking in Id see it as an intriguing transfer if it were to ever actually happen. If he flops simply sell him for a reasonable fee.

Hi all,

Just wanted to give a big shout out to the Ed's for making this site amazing and for all the rubbish they put up with from fantasy managers. And to the regulars for keeping the debates interesting. Not our best season but some positives on who we recruited and a season under their belt. A few additions in the summer and we're back in the mix.

I hope we have some luck in the transfer market, because yesterday showed by the team he put out, defensively we are so easy to run through.

2.) 29 May 2023 10:04:21
I agree, wishy washy. And when they ran through us, Gomez ran off, too.

Hi Ed's and Reds, I tried searching on Thiago but didn't see any news on whether he's fit to play the final. I did see some pics of him training in Paris but does anyone know if he's confirmed fit to play?

Thanks,
Vinny.

Vinny007

{Ed014's Note - in an interview with bein sports Klopp said he was 100% available.

I’ve just seen pictures of the squad arriving and Thiago looks like the cat that got the cream. He’s a very emotional player so for me that picture paints a thousand words.
He’s playing.

2.) 27 May 2022 20:10:48
I'm not sure if he'll play but he travelled with the team.

3.) 27 May 2022 20:35:52
Random aside to JK23 - I used the maxim "a picture paints a thousand words" when submitting my end of course dissertation at university several millennia ago.

I ended up submitting a 20 box comic strip in lieu of a 20,000 word dissertation.

Didn't end well :- (.

4.) 27 May 2022 21:58:28
Went down like a fart in a spacesuit Z?

5.) 27 May 2022 20:09:43
Thank God Ed014 I would have been very worried without him mate.

{Ed014's Note - me too mate, he’s incredible!

6.) 27 May 2022 22:30:28
I wonder if we've been very cautious with the injuries with the European Cup Final on the horizon. Thiago, Fabinho, Salah and van Dijk all walked off the pitch. Could Klopp have made them come off even though we were involved in a title chase and FA Cup Final?

7.) 27 May 2022 23:55:16
I actually thought the same Rigsby. He very well may have told them to let the bench know if they feel the slightest twinge.

8.) 28 May 2022 01:14:50
IF he's needed I reckon we have this without him. but with him. wow destruction time.

9.) 28 May 2022 10:37:22
Thiago is all fine and good. But you guys are underestimating what Kroos and Modric can do.

10.) 28 May 2022 18:04:07
ArAy mate. they have to get the ball first haha. Jr is the danger.

{Ed0666's Note - although Thiago and Fab are allegedly fit how match fit are they especially Fab who hasn’t played for a couple of weeks. This is my concern. Hopefully I’m being over cautious and my nerves and paranoia are getting the best of me!!!

Hi Ed1, not sure if you've written a piece on Ian Rush, I did try searching but didn't find anything. Can you add him to your legends list. His goal tally of 346 is nothing short of outstanding, it would be great if any of the Ed's or reds could share any stories about him on or off the field. I often feel he's overshadowed by the likes of King Kenny or Stevie G when people talk of liverpool legends.

Vinny007

{Ed001's Note - added him to the list for you. The only thing I can really remember about him, as he was a bit before my time really, was after Heysel and I was locked into what was then Speke Airport with my family as the team were coming back and no one was allowed in or out. Dalglish got smuggled out of a side entrance but Rush got left to deal with all the media. Poor guy had hundreds of mics and cameras in his face and was having to try and keep walking. He was the only one I couldn't get near enough to get a picture with.}

1.) 27 Sep 2021 05:24:25
He perfected the art of that diagonal run across a back four and then the acute arrow turn between defenders into space when he was at full tilt. Steve McMahon was particularly brilliant at spotting Rush’s runs.
It’s something you just don’t see these days, I suppose with the current fashion for a front three.
But I watch these high defensive lines and think that if Rush were playing today, he’d still be outstanding. Although you do wonder if he may be put out on the left wing.
But he was a very clever player and I’m sure he’d be able to adapt.

2.) 27 Sep 2021 06:43:26
Rushie was a fantastic player. Great finisher with great work rate and movement. He had that quick turn of pace which would take him past defenders when a ball was played through. I was only a kid when he left for Juventus but remember being in a foul mood over it, thay wasn't helped by not seeing the newly built front line with Barnes and Beardsley newly bought and Aldo being the new focal point of attack for what seemed like a lifetime due to Anfield being out of commission for the first few weeks of the season. I doubt his goal scoring record will ever be beaten. Real legend.

3.) 27 Sep 2021 07:51:42
An amazing goalscorer, used to use his pace getting onto the through ball and his finishing was clinical.
Also was the first line of defence as well, not one to shirk defensive responsibility.

4.) 27 Sep 2021 08:08:47
He was like Vardy on steroids with a ferocious appetite for tracking back and defending from the front. Arguably the greatest at doing that and his finishing was every bit as good as Fowler’s for those that weren’t lucky enough to see both in their prime.

5.) 27 Sep 2021 10:04:39
Also just to add, I don't remember him taking penalties and certainly didn't take free kicks, this just makes his goal scoring record more remarkable in my opinion.

6.) 27 Sep 2021 10:33:58
Spot on 1jj, he was the first centre forward I’d ever really noticed who consistently tracked back - he was an absolute nuisance for the opposition and was a brilliant first line of defence.

7.) 27 Sep 2021 11:47:58
He was lightning quick, a brilliant finisher, great in the air as well.

Hi Ed1, I was wondering about the injuries sustained to VVD and Gomez as bad as they were, do players fully recover or is there always some long-term damage and more care needed e. g. how much they train or how many games they play in the following season (s)? Thanks Vinny.

Vinny007

1.) 30 Jul 2021 16:30:36
Alan Shearer was better after his op than before. Hopefully they will both be good as new in time.

2.) 30 Jul 2021 16:34:38
I'm no expert but it differs from player to player and also depends on their position.

Football is one of the hardest sports to get back into after an injury like this due to the amount of pressure put on the knees and the need to rapidly change body position and direction of running. Best case scenario is to look at previous players.

Shearer snapped his ACL and then had one of his best seasons after. Roy Keane snapped his and whilst he didn't play particularly well the season after he eventually found his form again. Then you have Ox who didn't recover particularly well and lost a bit of his explosiveness (although seems to have it back) . Vidic (best comparison as same position) never hit the heights as he once did but was still an excellent defender.

It's very difficult however to judge, prior to actually watching them play over a season, how they will react to the injury. I would just say don't expect both to come in and start playing as they did before initially, they haven't played for 9 months and so won't have that match sharpness.

It's very possible that VVD will lose some of his pace but as a player who doesn't rely on pace all that much and a player who reads the game exceptionally well it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

If I'm not mistaken Gomez has had long term injuries before and has come back even better each time, I wouldn't be as concerned about him (he's also young so can adapt his game in the future for complication) .

I think in general you shouldn't be too worried about both VVD and Gomez, I actually thought VVD was very good when he came on, he just miss timed a tackle essentially. Joe also looked rather assured and made many bursts into the midfield (although also at fault for the goal) . I'd reserve judgement until they are fully fit and have match sharpness back.

As for care it requires a lot of specialist treatment (which they've been having for the last 9 months) and will until they are fully fit. You can also play a full season after however there is a chance of little niggles and set backs so I wouldn't bet on VVD playing a full season.

Cheers.

3.) 30 Jul 2021 16:49:39
Thanks for the reply lads, I suppose there's also a psychological side of it that they have to overcome. I've seen players with leg breaks from tackles not commiting to tackles due to fear of it happening again.

4.) 30 Jul 2021 19:20:06
OP, you can’t really tell cos these outcomes are not an exact science. It depends on the player, how his body reacts to its new way of life, mental recovery of the player which is critical and so on. They may have to reinvent the way they play to adapt to their new body type post injury.

Many players have gone on to have great careers after an ACL or the injury Gomez had. Ings is still balling out. Shevchenko balled out after an ACL injury and Nabil Fekir (multiple knee injuries) is still pulling trees at Betis. We will have to see what happen.

Sadio was class today but for me Fabinho was man of the match. Ed01 do you think we'll see more of Fabinho in the CB position and perhaps Thiago taking his place in midfield in the deeper holding position? Or do you think Fabinho is better positioned in midfield? Either way he's one of the first on the team sheet for me.

Vinny007

{Ed001's Note - he is best in midfield. It is only an emergency position for him at the back.}

1.) 20 Sep 2020 21:05:40
Spot on, Ed01. Fab seems to only have played as an emergency CB and played a blinder and shut down Timo Werner. That said, he should be nowhere near the CB position except emergency situations, IMO.

2.) 20 Sep 2020 21:45:24
we have a squad that has players who can fill in when required. Unless Fabinho wants to play CB as his preferred position or we have critical long term injuries, then this is just a stop gap.

I just thought it could be a really valuable scenario to get the likes of Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliot premier league experience, it could do wonders for their development and no better time when there isn't any pressure on them. Just a thought.
