“If you are in our squad, you are a good football player” Jurgen Klopp.

Absolutely love the man - how good must the young lads, like Neco feel?

West Derby Wanderer

1.) 25 Nov 2021 08:06:35
Klopp does not give out flowers to those he thinks have not earned it. If you play? You have gotten that chance in merit. Oh, and Neco was brilliant last night.

2.) 25 Nov 2021 08:52:43
Oli
You think Neco was brilliant last night. I can't agree. I thought the whole defence was ropey to say the least (bar Allison) .

3.) 25 Nov 2021 09:54:17
Except Neco was available for a sale and there weren't any takers. In fact, many were up for sale. don't take anything that he says.
Agree with the Irish. we let port shoot on more than 10 occasions and people say Neco was brilliant last night.

4.) 25 Nov 2021 10:00:40
Are you lumping Neco in with the whole unit and calling him ropey, Irish? Or, are saying all four were ropey individually? Either way I can’t really agree.

I think any ropiness stemmed from Porto’s starting position and that we had a rookie at number 6. Tyler did well, don’t get me wrong, but he’s no Fabinho so it means the defence has different pressures on it. That coupled with the fact that Porto set out to really have a go to try and get something from this game instead of needing to beat athletico Madrid meant they managed to create some chances. Still, what was it, 7 in the whole match? Only a few clear cut. Not bad I’d say with the team that got sent out.

I had Neco as my MOTM along with Thiago. He was aggressive, incisive and showed no panic, was up against a real speedster on his side and caused far more problems going forward than he allowed against him. Great showing IMO. His best yet for us.

5.) 25 Nov 2021 11:13:51
Keita - are you saying Klopp put Neco up for sale? Or any of the other players? You got any evidence of that? Don’t listen to Klopp but listen to you eh?

I don’t mind us being ‘ropey’ either, so long as it’s a 2-0 win.

At the end of the day, and despite some seeing the negatives from the performance at the expense of enjoying the win, we are clear qualifiers from what was supposed to be a difficult group.

Thankfully we can all get back to whining about not catching up with Chelsea at the weekend …….

6.) 25 Nov 2021 11:20:18
The defence as a whole was a bit dodgy, Porto had chances and didn’t take them thankfully. I would say the defence being a bit dodgy was probably more to do with the fact it was a little thrown together with only Ali and Matip the regulars, plus a kid in the 6 protecting them. Maybe I’m being a little harsh though saying dodgy because they didn’t play bad as such and there was no real urgency to win this game let’s be honest.
I thought Neco did alright to be honest, especially as the game went on and especially when attacking. He’s no Trent that’s for sure but nobody is.
I was more interested in watching players like the Ox, Kostas, Konate and Minamino. Players on the fringe of the first 11, I think it will be interesting to see how they get on this season.

7.) 25 Nov 2021 11:31:34
A comfortable 2-0 win, already qualified and with the chance to be the first British club to win all their games in the qualifying stages. Some youngsters blooded and as Klopp would say valuable rehab time for one or two returning from slight injuries.
It was possibly the first time that defence had ever played together before, and they had a 19 year old midfield CL debutant in front of them, so they were never going to be up to our usual standard.
Yet all some can find are negatives.

8.) 25 Nov 2021 11:47:17
. or you were priced out of a move.

9.) 25 Nov 2021 14:28:47
I hope the players have the intelligence to listen to what Klopp says even if some of our supporters don’t.

10.) 25 Nov 2021 17:14:05
Thought Neco played well, always looked for the ball and was a willing outlet, used it well, defensively was ok. A solid 7/ 10.

11.) 25 Nov 2021 17:16:52
IR, under the circumstances and context of the game where we had literally nothing to play for, I thought Williams was very good and showed great fight and desire to get forward and combine with Ox and Salah and Hendo when he came on. Ropey? Yeah, . What were you expecting from a makeshift team and defence? You're preaching to the choir on that one, bro.

16 Nov 2021 04:34:00
So that’s Mo and Thiago to Barcelona - perhaps we should just set Xavi up to be our next manager when JK leaves.

West Derby Wanderer

1.) 16 Nov 2021 06:46:27
Barca couldn't afford a packet of crisps at the moment and why would Mo go to a team who need a massive re build which could take years.

2.) 16 Nov 2021 07:16:33
Sunshine? Because they are still a massive club? Because its one of the clubs Salah had a desire to go to? Because they might pay more in wages than LFC and last but not least because he might be interested in the project?

3.) 16 Nov 2021 07:38:51
Maybe Irish but he's 30 years old and that's some project. Plus as is plainly obvious. they can't afford him. Unless he goes on a free transfer. Everything is possible but can't see it myself. Would be for money if he goes.

4.) 16 Nov 2021 07:42:30
Lazy journalism.
By the weekend both Salah and Barcelona will be linked with someone else. By this time next week Salah will be signing for Barcelona again.
The press need to generate sales/ clicks.

5.) 16 Nov 2021 08:47:40
Salahs agent maybe putting this out in the media to force Liverpool into making the improved contract offer?

6.) 16 Nov 2021 09:25:23
Thing is, they don’t have to afford him now. They can sit out the next 18 months and get him for free and there’s nothing we can do about it. At 31 on a free transfer that would still be great business for them.

7.) 16 Nov 2021 09:57:48
Anyway, Salah has said he wants to finish his career at Liverpool hasn’t he 😉.

8.) 16 Nov 2021 11:35:28
I think his words were something along the lines of “I’d like to finish my career here, but it depends on the club”. Which is distinctly similar to what Wijnaldum said at approximately the same point in his contract.

The owners have two choices, either pay him what he’s worth, or run the risk of him leaving without any ability to adequately replace him with a player of like for like ability and quality.

9.) 16 Nov 2021 11:48:49
Are we actually talking about Barcelona? You know the club who have wasted so much money over the past decade that they literally had to let their greatest ever player leave because they couldn’t afford his wages any longer? Hands up if, sunshine excluded, you can think of a good reason to go and play for Barcelona right now….

10.) 16 Nov 2021 15:10:53
Just because Xavi was a world class player, it does not translate into world class coaching ability nor does it pull Barcelona out of the neck high financial mess they are still in (which prominent club has he coached at to warrant all these high expectations - why doesn't Gerrard get the same treatment? ) . And even if Salah does decide to go there will his direct, speed-based style of play go well with the possession based tiki-taka style of play that Xavi will institute (my opinion)?

I think all is well for Salah at LFC. He meshes well with the environment, seems to be happy, scores goals and is the big fish in the big pond (EPL) . It's just about the big bucks that need to go along with all of that. Barcelona are a few years away from getting back to their previous levels. Is better Salah off staying at the peak where he is, or joining a project where success will probably happen when he's past his peak and on the down slope. I don't always buy the "it's a great future project and I want to be part of it" which is dished out by players. Look around you. Everyone wants everything now.

11.) 16 Nov 2021 18:25:43
ArAy, I think Gerrard doesn’t get the same reverence as he comes across as the typical English dullard footballer (see Lampard, Scholes, et al) with fairly limited ideas on the game. I know that sound harsh but it is what it is.

Xavi was, like it or not, one of the most technically and tactically brilliant footballers of his or any generation (and although Gerrard was a brilliant footballer, he wasn’t as technical or tactically as good as Xavi), Xavi is a very intelligent bloke and speaks multiple languages, he has been coached in the Barcelona style since he was a child, so there is good chance that he can translate that experience into management.

As for Salah, we just have to accept that foreign footballers do harbour a desire to play for the Barcelona’s and Real Madrid’s of this world, it would be churlish to think that even with their own current self inflicted catastrophe, that they’re anything other than a huge club. If they’re prepared to pay him what we’re not, I’d imagine that might seal the deal. He might also see it as his only chance to win a Balon D’or because of the exposure there. The fact is, the club needs to act and act quickly because once we’re in that last 18 months, the chances of retaining Salah are very very slim.

12.) 16 Nov 2021 18:26:54
In total agreement Johnny. can't see it at all. But who knows hey.

13.) 16 Nov 2021 19:46:46
Barca can’t afford a bus ticket right now BUT they can always dream. Lazy journalism, IMO.

{Ed025's Note - they have players to sell and want new blood oli, dont rule them out just yet mate..

14.) 17 Nov 2021 13:04:39
In Ansu Fati, Pedro and Gavi, they seem to have enough new blood to start with, Ed0666. But I still think it will take at least 3+ years to get back to previous high levels.

08 Nov 2021 04:46:12
Just so I’m clear, is the season officially over then? Can I put my slippers on and sit by the fire waiting for next August?

We didn’t perform and lost and there is work needs doing. I suspect the manager might have something to say on the subject to the players and I also expect a response from the squad.

The truth is, if we play as well as we can (e. g. Watford) we are as good as, if not better than, anyone in the league. If we don’t then there are a good number of teams who can give us a game. West Ham were up for it so fair play to them.

We don’t have a divine right to win, but equally the fans don’t have a divine right to expect perfection from every player, each and every minute of every game.

We are at a point where one or two need a kick up the backside and the squad collectively need to refocus on what they do best.

We, as fans, need to put our position into perspective - we are mis-firing at the minute but it is not like the situation is dire - let’s see how they respond in the next half dozen matches or so (when hopefully we will return to a near full strength squad) . I think the players have built up a bit of credit in the bank.

YNWA.

West Derby Wanderer

1.) 08 Nov 2021 07:12:07
There is a pattern developing in the games we’ve drawn and the one we lost, and it’s an alarming one where our midfield becomes non existent, our defence crumbles to pieces and we look devoid of ideas.

Add to that that we may be without Salah and Mane from two weeks before the AFCON and then the tournament (which the tournament runs from 9th January to 6th February), then you can’t in all honesty say that we really have much of a chance this season as realistically, that is 6 to 7 weeks where we don’t have our most regular scorers, I thought we could manage 3 or 4 weeks without them, but 7?

At this point 3rd or 4th will be an achievement.

2.) 08 Nov 2021 07:08:47
We are misfiring, missing too many chances, and conceding too many goals. We do not look to have found any consistency: beat United and Watford 5-0 then throw away a 2-goal lead to draw with Brighton and lose to West Ham. We need to either be more clinical or be tighter defensively, at the moment we are neither. Do not forget the impending AFCON either, where we will lose our top goal scorers.

To my mind we needed to have an almost flawless start to the season to have any chance of winning the league, as I believe we will drop points in the absence of Salah and Mane - instead we have gotten more and more inconsistent. The season isn’t over, but I’m of the opinion that, due to the AFCON and our current performances/ results, that the possibility of winning the league is now very slim. I hope I’m proven wrong but I don’t think we are playing well enough to win it,

Would new in January help? I don’t think so. It was clear we needed to strengthen our midfield and we didn’t. I believe some posters suggested we’d have issues in midfield if we suffered from injuries - we have suffered from injuries and now we have issues. The lack of options in midfield is the issue, no creativity or drive, and all similar types of player.

The biggest concern for me is Klopp sticking with out of form, poor performers. Robertson should have been dropped weeks ago but hasn’t been. Matip has been ropey for weeks, Konate still looks unsure, Gomez is still not given a run.

I know stuff like this can seem reactionary, and I guess it is, but these issues which came to the fore against Wedt Ham are no secret, so it is concerning that they continue to go unaddressed.

3.) 08 Nov 2021 07:55:42
My issue is klopp persisting with playing an out of robertson over tmikas. sp. seems obvious but klopp so stubborn. What do you think lads? Love Robbo but needs a rest imo.

4.) 08 Nov 2021 09:14:11
Seano, Gomez is injured - should be back after the International break.

5.) 08 Nov 2021 09:30:34
MartyMacFly, that is also my beef. With Robbo atm, it is becoming desperate. The guy is done as he seems not to know what he is doing. His touch is off, decision-making poor, passing and crossing inaccurate and defensively inept. Something has to give here cos this cannot continue.

As for the perf., we were not good enuff at any point in that game to expect to get anything from it. In fact, we deserved nothing anfd got what we deserved which was well, nothing. Now to go from here to start packing the season in? That's a stretch and frankly just ludicrous thinking esp. since all the other favs. have lost points and lost games.

A flawless start? That would never be possible cos NO team/ fav. has had a flawless start so far so not sure why the bar is being raised for a team that was not supposed to be challenging anyway, per the experts? It was a bad perf. and it is just one loss in 25 in all comps. We need to do better, play better and esp. coach better, IMO. We move on.

6.) 08 Nov 2021 12:17:05
I don't know if Robertson's form is down to tiredness or not. I don't think he's the first choice left back at the club, at the moment, though. And our full backs are so important to the way we play.

7.) 08 Nov 2021 13:32:26
It was a game of small infinitesimal margins. If Alisson doesn't let that ball go through beneath him (which usually never ever happens) and Mané nets the ball with his head by varying the angle by a couple of degrees, we'd all be dancing and talking about having escaped a close one. My one worry is Robertson. We need him at his best for the rest of the way otherwise he needs to make way for Tsimikas.

8.) 08 Nov 2021 13:44:08
Robbo is becoming a really big problem now and something has to give cos this cannot continue any longer.

9.) 08 Nov 2021 16:12:18
Just mu thoughts on last nights game. First goal, foul, Ogbonna jumps into Allisson, gk fals backwards, plus the attackers arms are high. Creswell challenge, he gets the ball but on the top of it, excessive force, into a knee high challenge, endangering a opponent. Nothing comparing what used to happen, but on todays rules and previous example, shouldve been a RED.

{Ed077's Note - No foul on the first goal. Allisson flapped at it, simple as.

10.) 08 Nov 2021 18:26:57
Personally I think Alisson should have gone Toni Schumacher on them and taken the defender out. Ref isn’t going to give a foul if is “going for the ball”.

11.) 08 Nov 2021 19:15:46
Geez, that was 39 years ago in 1982. Give the guy a break and let him live in peace, already.

12.) 08 Nov 2021 20:27:04
Interesting fact ArAy, Toni S was one of the biggest sh*t houses in football at the time. He loved a bit of aggro and banter. Apparently he picked up Patrick Battiston’s teeth after battering him, then put them in his keepers bag, then offered them back to Battiston on his wedding day.

02 Nov 2021 04:13:38
Good to see Fabs and Thiago in the pics from Monday’s training session.

Be interesting to see the team selection for the CL match.

West Derby Wanderer

1.) 02 Nov 2021 08:26:43
We might struggle without them but I hope they both get a rest on Weds or maybe just grab a few minutes at the end.
Fab especially is so important that you don't want to risk him, this weekend's game is more important I feel.

2.) 02 Nov 2021 13:44:44
Great to see that as well, WDW. Personally, I see the AM game as a kind of free hit cos if we win, we qualify for the next round with two dead rubbers to spare. If we draw, still solid. If we lose? Not ideal BUT if that means we have Fab and Thiago back for the weekend vs WH then, it's a trade Im willing to make. If we had to lose a game then, I'd rather have it be on Wed than vs WH on Sun. Jut my opinion.

3.) 02 Nov 2021 14:50:18
I don't think Klopp will risk Fabinho and Thiago for the Atletico game. Let's hope Keita is able to play. Seems to have some confidence and form at present.

4.) 02 Nov 2021 19:11:13
I think JK said Keita isn’t going to make the AM game, mate.

Personally I would play a back 8 who are instructed to fall over and roll around every time one of the Athletico comes within 2 yards of them or within 10 yards of our penalty area. It would be fun to watch Simeone :)

22 Oct 2021 23:45:37
Lovely bit of footwork by Mo - quoted as saying he wants to finish his career at Liverpool.

Over to you board ….

I’m old and perhaps too cynical but can anybody else see the headlines when he signs for Real Madrid? “It wasn’t me, I never wanted to leave” …….

West Derby Wanderer

1.) 23 Oct 2021 00:12:07
Exactly matey I was thinking the same thing salah (agent) will ask for a certain amount, the club will nearly have a heart attack and stutter, he meanwhile will say I want too stay for the rest of my career the fans are in heaven " we want mo " while our mo knows for a fact we ain't paying silly wages cos we tight as a budgies asscrack.

{Ed0666's Note - or a ladybirds fart.

2.) 23 Oct 2021 00:58:25
WDW now where have I heard the old"I never wanted to leave the club"gag🤔.

3.) 23 Oct 2021 01:12:32
Ed do you think he will sign? , do u think he has played a blinder? He has covered his ass big time saying he wants too stay, but we all know this comes down too what other clubs will and might of offered him and its a case of us matching crazy wages . Further still as ed 02 has pointed out numerous times down the years salah an his advisor have been actively hawking his services but been laughed at, if that's the case imagine how our owners will act .

{Ed001's Note - no idea sorry.}

4.) 23 Oct 2021 06:18:02
Haha I didn't take as cynical a view. Don't tend to make too much of these media takes, either way.

5.) 23 Oct 2021 08:03:26
Salah wants to be paid similar to players in the league he’s better than. Klopp wants to keep him. Remember he said he wants us to become a ‘destination club’ for players and not a stepping stone, if the owners allow our best player to leave for the 4th or 5th time then I think we’ve accepted we’ll never be one of the elite clubs under them. Im fairly neutral on them as of now but if Salah isn’t kept i’ll want them gone and i’m sure there’ll be many others who turn.

6.) 23 Oct 2021 08:24:58
No need to over analyse this one. He wants to stay and if he gets close to what he wants, he will.

7.) 23 Oct 2021 08:31:35
Maybe, just maybe, Mo doesn't want to stay. When he came back to the Premier league he said "he wanted to prove he could do it here". Well he's proven he can and then some. I wouldn't read too much into words or even a new signed contract. This smacks of Suarez all over again.

8.) 23 Oct 2021 10:17:18
He's been a great servant for the club. And I mean GREAT. He's played a huge part in us winning the League after a 30 year wait and a sixth European Cup.
If he wants to go, wish him well. I'm almost sure he's given us his best years anyway.

9.) 23 Oct 2021 10:29:04
The only reason this isn't the same as suarez situation is because liverpool and Barcelona are is opposing positions. Liverpool win things. Big things. We are a top team again and not just because of salah. He knows we are no longer a stepping stone team but a team challenging season after season. He can win balon d or with us which is what he wants and our profile is building too.

10.) 23 Oct 2021 11:20:51
Maybe the bloke just wants to stay! Maybe there is no conspiracy to theorise about. Maybe the money men at the club should just get this done sharpish, it has to be better sponsorship and merchandise-wise to have the best and most recognisable footballers at your club.

11.) 23 Oct 2021 12:01:28
I don’t believe the allure of the two Spanish clubs is there anymore. They used to pay the best and win the most so it was a no brainer. Nowadays they pay well but aren’t guaranteed to win anything. For some players winning matters and I believe salah is one of them.

12.) 23 Oct 2021 13:02:45
The last thing we should allow to happen is for Mo to be viewed as the villain or as greedy. He wants the going rate for a player of his level. Would you accept less at work just so your wealthier boss can save money? We can’t run the we make superstars not buy them line then not pay up when they become superstars. If a single player in that dressing room had a problem with Salah’s wages (they won’t) I’d rather get rid of them and keep Mo than the other way around wether it’s Origi or Minamino or van Dijk or Alisson. Nothing stops any member of the squad from earning the same kind of money as him if they can get to his level.

13.) 23 Oct 2021 14:39:28
He wants to stay. We want to keep him. Get it done. The End.

It all boils down to what makes a great team - if you think it is a mix of skills, character and understanding of the way the team plays that together makes the sum of the whole greater than the sum of the parts or you want 11 individuals who are the most talented in their respective positions but have no concept of the team.

Anyway roll on January - nothing like four weeks of hysteria to get the year off to a flying start.

VVVV, everyone who reads this site (and I’ll bet a whole lot more who don’t read this site), know and really do understand what you think about Traore.

You are entitled to your opinion and you are entitled to express it, but we’ve all grasped the idea that you think he has no end product and that players cannot be coached in the techniques required to produce a decent end product, so subverting 70% of posts to slag him (and Sanches off) really is becoming tedious.

I support the club and all the lads who pull on the shirt. It maybe that he doesn’t make the grade IF we sign him but I’d be happy to support both the opinion of one of the best managers in world football today and to support him trying to coach raw talent to produce the goods. Call me old fashioned but I thought that’s what fans do.

{Ed0666's Note - you forgot the bit about how he couldn’t make it at the Barcelona youth academy.

No we’re not ArAy, sad but true I’m afraid.

Thommo is right - Liverpool fans have changed over the years (anyone remember the Kop applauding the opposition goalie when they were defending the Kop? ) . It’s not just Liverpool fans, of course nut it seems sadder for us as we were better than most back in the day.

Banter has, as a general rule, died away. Again, sad but true.
