Hey ed001 you have great football knowledge and wanted to ask how come the system we are implementing works for City i. e John Stones/ Ake / Lewis etc. yet we are struggling to implement it. Is it simply a case of personnel and that we don't have the players to fit it.

dilly2

{Ed001's Note - they don't use the same system, they tweaked it away from the way we are trying to do it because it didn't work for them either. That is why they play a backline that all are comfortable as centre-backs and full-back. So they just drop in, rather than trying to go from midfield into full-back areas.}

1.) 14 Aug 2023 11:26:57
I guess that's why Cancelo kicked up a fuss as he lost his position in that role.

2.) 14 Aug 2023 11:37:02
It is so so strange watching TAA tackling an opposing player on the far left-hand side line, when in midfield. How do the others (Robbo, Gakpo and Diaz, on that side yesterday) know what to do when this is happening? Does one of those 3 run over to the right hand side to cover the gap TAA has left? You reap what you sow. This system and set up needs serious review.

3.) 14 Aug 2023 11:41:26
One of the biggest changes from Guardiola over the last 12 months is that the team is happy to give up possession for periods in the game and just do a bit of defending for a period. They seem to have adapted.

4.) 14 Aug 2023 12:14:20
Trent alluded to what ed1 said in His post match interview last night, he said it’s sometimes quicker for him to go CB and konate to go RB, but Trent ain’t no CB!

5.) 14 Aug 2023 12:38:37
CB drifting over to cover the RB shouldn't be a new thing. actually there were plenty of moments last year where it felt like the CBs on both sides were passive in coming across to provide cover. Either that or they wouldn't anticipate the pass through to a winger, where if they did they could have cut a pass out or at least competed for the ball.

anyways, back to the system. Feel like this system requires so much precision across the pitch to keep the ball that if we're not 95% onto it and lose the ball then we're vulnerable. that doesn't feel like a solid way to set-up and won't be sustainable across the season.

Want to shout out ed001 who was the first to wax lyrical for Nat Philipps. He has risen to the occasion each time he has played this season and has gotten better every game. Even his passing has improved each game. Goes to show you don't need insane pace to be a good CB.

dilly2

1.) 14 Apr 2021 23:34:28
He was very good tonight, he’s someone who looks as if he is fighting for his right to remain a part of this squad. Clearly been doing some work on the training ground and it showed. Even when he was close to getting done he used his nouse to slow the play down. Hope he can keep up the hard work and win Jurgen over.

2.) 14 Apr 2021 23:35:28
Risen to the occasion? We lost 3-1 last week and he was skinned for their first goal; by a quick player, admittedly.
He might be ok alongside the likes of VVD as a back up.
He's not good enough, in my opinion.

3.) 14 Apr 2021 23:37:12
Really and good solid player. The lack of pace will flair up now and again but that can be countered with pace beside him. Kabak has stepped up at time but it's unfair of us to judge each of them as though they are each playing alongside vvd.

4.) 14 Apr 2021 23:38:04
He’s a good back up. Got found out massively in that first leg vs Madrid, though he wasn’t helped in any way. I’d keep the boy 100%.

5.) 15 Apr 2021 00:09:58
4th Choice at best.

6.) 15 Apr 2021 06:35:20
His passing has improved so much

Klopp took kabak of twice never phillips tho.

7.) 15 Apr 2021 07:28:57
Dezykid, Phillips staying on instead of Kabak doesn’t mean much . It is all about strategy. IMO, Klopp takes Kabak off cos he needs Phillips height in case crosses are being spammed in for him to defend or for him to attack offensive set pieces should we need a goal. These scenarios are planned in advance if the situation in the game calls for it. Just my opinion.

8.) 15 Apr 2021 08:29:34
I'm pretty sure I raised the the alert on Phillips way before anyone :p
ha but yea he has been good, solid performance last night!

9.) 15 Apr 2021 09:11:44
Spot the odd one out -
VVD, Gomez, possibly Konate, and errr Phillips.
Hmmm?

10.) 15 Apr 2021 09:51:28
Nat Phillips reminds me of Larry Lloyd. Paisley sold him to Forest because he didn't suit our high line. At Forest Lloyd looked very good in a defence that defended deep with the play always in front of him. Phillips is the same. Would be brilliant in a defensive team ie Palace of West Brom say but doesn't have the pace of mobility to play in a defence that defended high and has "full backs" who play as wingers. e
I think he will go on and be a premier league player but unfortunately for him I doubt it it will be at Anfield.

11.) 15 Apr 2021 10:21:39
Exactly what I was intimating redwayne, I wasn’t being nasty or anything about Phillips btw.
Don’t forget too, we might still have Matip at the club if he isn’t sold. That’s not a given at all.
The ideal is that you play a style of football that everyone can fit comfortably in with and players can be interchanged.

12.) 15 Apr 2021 11:37:34
Whos going to offer money for Matip? I think Matip, VVD and Gomez will all be at the club next season and Konate will come in too. Davies and Phillips will be sold to help fund Konate and Kabak won't be signed. That would be a top top class centreback 4 at the club.

13.) 15 Apr 2021 10:23:51
I think Phillips is the one positive out of this horrible season.

14.) 15 Apr 2021 14:17:54
I agree, Longthing76.

28 Feb 2021 22:26:34
Yikes Ed001 wasn't joking when he said Kabak was very raw. Oli Mcburnie is probably the worst striker in the league but the amount of times he got in behind and Kabak was just ball watching was worrying. I get that he is raw and young for a CB but he has played a season or two in a top 5 league and should not be that erratic and rash with his positioning.

dilly2

1.) 28 Feb 2021 23:16:37
He’s 20 and that was his 4th game in a new country.

2.) 28 Feb 2021 23:18:57
I would like too see davies get a chance as he would provide balance being left footed, I feel sorry for kabak as he thrown into one of our worst runs and we are relying on him to hit the ground running.

3.) 28 Feb 2021 23:49:07
To be fair we kept a clean sheet!

4.) 01 Mar 2021 01:30:13
Kabak needs time he is only 20 years old and although he has been playing in one of the top leagues he has been playing for one of the teams that have been in absolute turmoil. He is coming not just to a new country new style of play he is coming with low confidence from a team getting battered week in week out. Sheffield tried to set their strikeforce to bully our young Centrebacks and overall I think they did a fair job under the circumstances. Remember they kept a clean sheet against a tricky team without much midfield protection they would have gotten from our first choice mid. I personally think once kabak starts working alongside and learning from big Virg he will become a monster.

5.) 01 Mar 2021 01:32:27
Also shoutout to Phillips who stood up to 2 big bruising CF and rarely got a foot wrong and majority of the time dominated them in the air :)

6.) 01 Mar 2021 07:14:50
I don't think Kabak is going to get the time he might need. I can see him being shipped back to Germany at the end of our season. £18 million isn't a lot these days but in our current situation every penny needs to be spent wisely.
I still see no reason why Phillips couldn't be our 4th choice CB.

7.) 01 Mar 2021 08:10:40
In fairness Kabak’s no look finish at the end of the first half actually showed the rest of the players how to score. Next chance we had Jones cooly side footed into the corner.

8.) 01 Mar 2021 09:25:40
Kabak might only be 20 but he has a lot of experience in Germany and shouldn't be made to look a fool by shef utd's second rate strikers, Nat done well though. Time for Ben to be given a chance i think.

9.) 01 Mar 2021 09:37:29
You can literally see that Kabak is still not comfortable in the team. For me, that is not his fault cos he is in a team in full meltdown and that is trying to find some kind of form and confidence and it is not ideal for him. He is still a kind and regardless of his talent or lack thereof, we simply cannot judge him now.

Young CB's need time to mature, end of. Gomez was not that good at Kabak's age but he was afforded time to find his feet and were it not for the injuries, heaven knows what he would have become right now. Kabak will get no such time esp. in a team in the mud.

As for the game yesterday, He made some errors in appreciation of flighted balls and his lack of awareness is showing cos players keep running off him. He was also caught going for the same ball as Phillips a couple of times which is a lack of comms. on both players' part. Not much we can do about it now. We have to go with them, I guess.

17 Feb 2021 22:03:30
Ed001 have you got/ done a player profile on Haaland. He just can't stop scoring but anytime I watch him, I can't quite put my finger on it but there isn't a part of his game (apart from finishing) were you can say yep one of the best out there. Yet he is an absolute goal machine.

dilly2

{Ed001's Note - he is on the list to do mate. He is an odd fish, he scores goals like no tomorrow but you are right, there is not a lot else that is top class.}

1.) 18 Feb 2021 00:19:40
Disagree goals is just his game. Strength, pace and power is his game. I’ve never seen such a large fella with that pace, only Lukaku at full pelt is compatible. Ridiculous player, every time I have watched him he has blown me away, apart from as a kid when he played us for RB.

2.) 18 Feb 2021 00:34:34
Maybe it’s because they are both lefties but his finishing reminds me of Robbie Fowler. Deft touch when required but also knows when only pure power will get the job done. Fowler always instantly knew what type of finish was required to score (and generally nailed it), this fellow looks to have the same instinctive gift.

3.) 18 Feb 2021 01:05:34
I’m with you Big Virgil. Haaland is defying physics with his size and pace. Not to mention his finishing is simply world class. The scary thing is he is only 20 years old. I truly believe the kid and that’s what he is a kid, will go onto hit those crazy stats of 30 plus goals consistently every year over a long period.

4.) 18 Feb 2021 04:36:23
Ed, to say that not a lot else is top class when talking about Haaland is just blatantly untrue, nonsense in fact.
Haaland is world class against every type of team and is scoring goals at a rate/ age not seen since Pele.
There is no part of the game in which Haaland struggles, he is a one-man wrecking crew.

{Ed001's Note - being a world class player does not mean every aspect of your game is world class. His pressing is not the best, his link up play is hit and miss. What makes him so good is he is clinical when a chance comes along. But his game still needs work on other aspects to make him greater. He does not have the leap of a Cristiano Ronaldo or the heading accuracy of a Niall Quinn. He doesn't stroke the ball round the pitch like Xabi Alonso or have that hammer bolt long range strike of Gerrard. That is why, despite how great a finisher he is, Dortmund are struggling this season. No matter what your ridiculous post may suggest, he is just one man who needs service to be effective. The only person talking nonsense is you.}

5.) 18 Feb 2021 09:56:18
Haaland is a talent no doubt and his is clinical with pace and power. However, he is still a rough diamond in terms of other aspects to his game that need work. This is why he is not a Mbappe's level yet. Nowhere near it, IMO cos Mbappe has improved his overall game and his finishing is very well-improved. Mbappe is world class and bordering on inter-stellar, if you like. Haaland is nowhere near that level yet overall. Haaland needs time to develop, IMO.

6.) 18 Feb 2021 09:56:49
Ed001 does a mic drop and casually walks off stage😂.

7.) 18 Feb 2021 10:42:56
Hey Ed, Alan Shearer was the best at nothing either. except scoring a crazy amount of goals!

{Ed001's Note - exactly, you don't need to be great at anything else if you can put the ball in the back of the net so regularly. It is the hardest part of the game. The only time it really matters is if the manager has a different style of play and he is unable to contribute anything else. Such as a Pep or Klopp team, he would need to adapt his game. I think he needs to move from the Bundesliga to a league with defenders that can actually defend as well, to learn some of the tricks to dealing with better quality defenders.}

8.) 18 Feb 2021 11:08:00
I would add positioning and movement to pace, power and finishing. Watching him and seeing how he constantly gets into goal scoring positions shows game intelligence that belies his years. His numbers are freakish and that's no coincidence. He does need to work on his link up play, he doesn't tend to get involved too much in the build up.

{Ed001's Note - I would say positioning is a defensive aspect and he doesn't have that. Anticipation I would call it that he has and I do agree, he knows where to be, it is not luck that rebounds fall to a good striker on a regular basis. I would defo agree with you though other than the difference in our terminology. To make the step up to play for the best clubs and win European trophies etc, as well as score goals, he just needs to be a little more rounded. Otherwise, as I said in the podcast we recorded last night, he is just like a Jamie Vardy turned up to 12 and will need a team built around just getting the ball to him. The best teams, that win consistently, need to be more than just a one-man band. I am sure he realises that and is working to improve his game, he already looks much better than he did when he first burst on the scene.}

Question for ed001 I remember you waxing lyricals about Mcginn of Villa last season about how excellent he was. Watched him last night against Chelsea and he ran the show in midfield. What surprised me was how excellent his technique was as I thought he was a simple box to box player. Do you think he would make a good Gini replacement and if you haven't done a player review on him may I ask for one.

dilly2

{Ed001's Note - I haven't yet done a profile on him, but he is coming near to the top of the list now due to previous requests for one.

As for a replacement for Wijnaldum, it depends on what you consider a replacement. He can do the job in central midfield well enough I am sure, but he wouldn't offer any of the flexibility of covering the holding role or being able to push further forward in need. I would also worry about his fitness, as he does seem to struggle with stamina and often fades at the end of games, plus he has suffered a fair bit of time about with niggles. Whether that is just because of the training at Villa not pushing him hard enough in the past or not, I am not sure though. But I would fear another Keita, where the step up in intensity might just mean he is barely ever fit to feature. Obviously it might mean the complete opposite and that his niggles were down to a lack of intensity, but without seeing medical test results I can't be sure which it is.}

1.) 29 Dec 2020 07:01:18
Thanks for the reply ed. I'll try to also catch Bissouma of Brighton as he is another that's been linked. However wouldn't he also not be flexible as he plays mostly just as a holding midfielder for Brighton? Have you done a profile on him as I would love to know if you think he has what it takes to step up.

{Ed001's Note - Bissouma plays the central midfield role that Gini plays mainly, except I would say that his normal level is higher than Gini's. I would see him as a slight upgrade, as he is probably the closest to Kante in quality I have seen in the Prem. They don't play as a holding midfielder, they need freedom to roam to be effective, but players like Bissouma you just go and get if you can, as they make the team they play in better.

I haven't yet done a profile on him, though he is on the list, but quite a way down as people were sleeping on him last season.}

2.) 29 Dec 2020 09:20:16
Been impressed with how he handles him self on the pitch, he engine and work rate is massively impressive. On the note of Brighton players and injury prone one to be exact, what happened or is happy to a certain Mr Lallana ed? Seems to be injured every other day.

3.) 29 Dec 2020 09:44:56
Could we not go for McGinn an improvement on baby without a doubt a d a fellow scotsman for robbo to play alongside.

{Ed047's Note - I think any baby would be an improvement on Gaby whether they were Scottish or not mate.

4.) 29 Dec 2020 10:06:21
Ha ha lol good one mate a must be tired from niteshift last nite spelling mistake but in all fairness maybe a baby would be stronger than naby.

{Ed047's Note - more likely the notorious auto correct mate, now get some sleep! 🤣😴😴

5.) 29 Dec 2020 10:49:34
Ed1 you have a high opinion of Bissouma. So I need to take a closer look at him, as I wasn't particularly impressed when watching him, but I value your opinion regarding players.
Can I therefore ask your opinion of Schlupp from Crystal Palace.

{Ed001's Note - Bissouma is excellent mate, good close control, tight turns on the ball to get himself out of trouble, good reading of the game. But, a bit like Kante, he isn't going to ping Xabi Alonso-esque passes around the field. He can drive forward with it at his feet and he is quick as well.

As for Schlupp, it is difficult to judge him. I have seen him play up front, on the wing, central midfield and at full-back. He has pace, but lacks the skill and movement to play up front or on the wing. He works hard but lacks the reading of the game and positional sense for midfield or full-back. Decent enough left-sided utility player, but no more than someone you would have to fill gaps.}

6.) 29 Dec 2020 11:05:40
Bisouma is quality and miles ahead of McGinn, IMO. I hope we get him cos he is already better than Keita and a proper replacement for Gini. The guy is the real deal.

7.) 29 Dec 2020 13:42:58
Damn.
I never thought much of Bissouma, but now I want him badly.
Cheers Ed001.

Mark Thiago finished the season great. Was instrumental in our side as we clawed our way back. Koke and the young puig I understand but Rodri? Do you really need rodri when spain have 80 percent plus of the ball against the other sides. Besides rodri is about as mobile as a traffic cone, pep never plays him on his own as a number 6.

I see you mentioned before ed that you think be could play the firmino role in the future. Is that because his lack of outright pace that makes him perhaps not suitable for a modern day winger.

dilly2

{Ed001's Note - more because he has the skillset to play central.}

No curtis Jones on this list ed001? Think he has been excellent in a season were the midfield has been chopped and changed so much.

dilly2

{Ed001's Note - he is more of an attacking mid.}
