Ed002,

" Liverpool to hold talks with 22-year old PSV striker Donyell Malen. [Sky Sport]"

Nonsense or is there some truth here?

johnzandt

{Ed002's Note - I have explained for a number of months that Liverpool are keen.}

1.) 17 Jun 2021 14:36:41
If that’s the case I get you can put a strike through Patson Daka 😔.

2.) 17 Jun 2021 15:22:07
Regardless of the fact of who his agent is, no denying he’s one of the brightest talents in European football.

Personally I’d prefer Daka, but can’t argue against Malen being a smart signing.

3.) 17 Jun 2021 15:24:08
Leicester have reportedly bid for Patson Daka.

4.) 17 Jun 2021 17:05:19
To be honest, having not studied either of them in great detail (other than Sofifa or Youtube) they appear to be quite similar - pacy strikers who can also play out wide in a front 3.

One's done really well in the Dutch league, the other in the Austrian.

Prices quoted are not outrageous - Daka appears to be a bit cheaper at £17m vs £25m.

Has anyone seen them play regularly who could add more to the discussion? Which one would be a better fit?

{Ed0666's Note - personally I think Malen would be a better fit as he’s the natural scion to Bobby, has better movement than daka yet both are rapid.

5.) 17 Jun 2021 17:17:30
I don’t see anything on sky sports about this. Is it from a h
Papers / gossip section?

6.) 17 Jun 2021 19:14:52
Ed0666 I do remember Daka giving VVD and Gomez a very hard time in a friendly against RBS, I know it was only a friendly but he stood out a mile.

{Ed0666's Note - honestly mate I’d be happy with either. I like mallen as in my opinion he’d be a more seamless and integrate better to our style of play I think. And if he signed and did well it would annoy Ed 014 as he’s ex arsenal player

7.) 17 Jun 2021 20:06:40
Daka be going to Leicester.

8.) 17 Jun 2021 19:43:51
Ed's any chance that Salah / Mane will be sold this summer or will new contracts be offered instead? How will that game of chess play out, knowing how market traderesque Salah's agent is?

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any plans to sell either.}

9.) 17 Jun 2021 20:33:50
Daka is a more natural replacement for Vardy. He’d suit Leicester more than he would suit us. I would agree with Ed that Malen is more suited to our style of play if JK intended to play him centrally.

Always going to be difficult to find a replacement for Bobby that offers the same link up, although JK may think it’s time for a change up top and to adapt our style.

We need to find a way to beat a low block more next season as that was our downfall for a good few games. Striker will be an important position to get right for that.

10.) 17 Jun 2021 21:17:35
Malen does look a good player and decent value.

27 May 2019 12:54:30
Hi Eds,

Is there any updates on the fitness/ availability of the team for Saturday? Kieta aside, will we be at full strength?

johnzandt

{Ed001's Note - even Keita has a chance.}

1.) 27 May 2019 13:28:52
Hey Ed001, that's great to hear. Thanks for the Prompt reply. Have a good one.

{Ed001's Note - welcome mate.}

2.) 27 May 2019 15:21:00
Ed001 - what chance do you give us for the final?

{Ed001's Note - ?}

3.) 27 May 2019 17:46:22
No point risking Keita, I’m sure one of gini or Milner will be on the bench plus ox probably. Even shaqiri if we need a goal. Keita has struggled with little niggles all season, and whilst I’d love for him to be involved, it’s too risky to even bring him on.

4.) 27 May 2019 20:05:17
Are you a doctor/ physio Firmane? I'm assuming you work for the club do you?

5.) 27 May 2019 22:19:58
Risky? If he gets a niggle he can play through it and then rest it on the beach in the Maldives drinking Mai Tais!
All hands to the pump for this game.

6.) 27 May 2019 23:17:50
I’m sorry for having an opinion on this site instanbul! Firstly, my thinking was if he had to come off again, we’d be down a sub. Secondly, the last niggle he got he couldn’t play on, nothing to do with beaches or what not, we need players who are 100% on the pitch. If spurs want to play Kane at 75% fine, but we have Gini Milner hendo Fabinho all pushing to start, with ox and shaqiri capable off the bench if needed.

Nothing against Keita one bit, he played great at the end of the season, but two weeks ago he couldn’t walk on it. why risk it?

7.) 28 May 2019 09:54:03
Sorry Firmane mate I meant no offence. Purely that if he’s on the bench it means that he’s been passed fit by the medical staff so if he’s the best man to come on then we should use him. No point being cautious in the last and biggest game of the season.
Even if he was 100% fit I wouldn’t see him starting this game. I don’t think Klopp trusts him completely defensively as much as say Hendo, Wiji or Milner.

8.) 28 May 2019 12:03:33
I second beckers post firmane, my reply was rather abrupt and I apologise for that. If he's fit and available it would be klopps decision wouldn't it.

12 May 2014 15:07:24
Hi Eds,

Is it true that Southampton are interested Enrique? If so, could we use that as a carrot for making a bid for Shaw as well or would he be used in the Lallana deal. If we went after Shaw, in your opinion, would we hold the advantage over Utd?

johnzandt

{Ed002's Note - Shaw doesn't figure in any of this.}

30 Dec 2013 15:39:22
Hi Eds,

Can you give us some idea of which players or positions we are actively looking at in January.

johnzandt

{Ed001's Note - full backs, wingers and central midfield.}

1.) 30 Dec 2013 16:27:16
Montoya/Bertrand, Salah and Rackitic then

2.) Both attacking and defensive or what type of midfielder ed

{Ed001's Note - seems to be a creative player, such as Rakitic, we are hunting for the midfield.}

3.) Thanks oddly I was think defensive midfielder but i'm happy

4.) Agyemang-Badu, Rakitic, Salah and Montoya

Remember guys, we're a banter club now like Arsenal, no chance at winning anything this season.

johnzandt

19 Sep 2021 01:49:30
Guys,

Forget about it, we didn't spend 100 million in the summer, we're definitely a banter clubs now. Definitely not a club that's 15 games unbeaten in the prem, has only conceded 1 goal this season, averaging 3 goals per game, and over 120 shots at goal. Definitely not that sort of team.

johnzandt

1.) 19 Sep 2021 09:23:59
Only 4 games in mate! 3 players out injured now!
We’ve nice stats but early days I’d cool the jets!

2.) 19 Sep 2021 09:42:10
Spoken like a true fan, one of the injured (Bobby) is back in training this week, one has a minor calf injury (Thiago) with JK saying it looked minor after the match and the other one an 18 Year who has played three games for the club.

I’d prefer to go with the 12 wins and 3 draws in our last 15 league games - that isn’t far off the equivalent of half a season unbeaten….

3.) 19 Sep 2021 10:16:16
Jay, you're a typical Dub. We're 5 games in as well.

13 Sep 2021 03:02:47
All my luck to Harvey. Get well soon.

Now to the game, which Fabinho and Thiago completely bossed. I still don't think we've hit out full stride which is a good place to be in which teams like United and Chelsea hitting the ground running. I do think we're going to be very difficult to beat this season if our main back 6 (Allison, VVD, Joel, Trent, Andy and Fab) stay fit.

For all the naysayers about the transfer window we're in pretty good shape. Isn't that 15 games unbeaten since last season now?

johnzandt

1.) 13 Sep 2021 06:32:26
Leeds were incredibly lucky it was only three. They got battered. Great to see. Thiago played really well, Fabinho nearly always does.

2.) 13 Sep 2021 08:07:12
Neville said it perfectly after the game that is the kind of game Thiago was brought in for its frantic and everyone is doing a lot of running just requires someone to put a foot on the ball and calm it down played fantastic yesterday as Keane would say that's his job.

3.) 13 Sep 2021 09:05:24
Spot on, OP. It easily could have been 10 with the way we completely bullied them all game except for the first 10 mins or so where e struggled to get into the game. I knew this was the perfect game for Thiago to shine in cos we need a player who can control the tempo when things get frantic and he did that very well. Fab is back, btw. A way much better perf than the Chelsea game where he was off the pace all game. We are not at full pelt yet which is where you want to be this early so one game at a time and keep it moving.

As for Elliott, not too worried about him. He is a tough cookie and will be well looked after by the club and Klopp himself. We have enuff leader in the DR as well, to help him out esp those who have come thru long spells out due to bad injuries. He'll be okay, IMO.

23 Aug 2021 16:53:43
Okay guys, it's being reported that Liverpool have blocked several players - Salah and the Brazilians from playing their international games as they're red list countries and would require 10 days of quarantine when they return.

johnzandt

1.) 23 Aug 2021 18:35:09
So they should.
Sod International football.

2.) 23 Aug 2021 19:19:43
No Salah is allowed travel to Gabon as its an Amber country. Its Egypt the club won't allow him to travel to.

{Ed0666's Note - the irony

3.) 23 Aug 2021 19:21:18
I'm fifa rules won't allow us to block them going.

23 Aug 2021 09:43:50
Ed001,

Would you stick with Matip for Chelsea or bring in Konate. This is in no way a slight on Joel, I think he's been great, but we all know that Lukaku is going to use this size a strength and would a bit of extra size and muscle to deal with him be idea i. e if we have it, why not use it?

johnzandt

{Ed001's Note - I wouldn't change it personally, Matip has done well enough to deserve his place and making a change now could upset the rhythm.}

1.) 23 Aug 2021 10:32:17
If it’s not broke then don’t fix it.

2.) 23 Aug 2021 10:59:08
Thanks Ed.

{Ed001's Note - very welcome john.}

3.) 23 Aug 2021 11:08:55
Agree that there's no need to make changes in defence as they will have massively benefitted from the workout at the weekend.

I hope that this time we do not give Jorginho the freedom of the pitch (reminds me of Kroos in Real away game) . Might be a justification to bring Bobby in there even if harsh on Jota.

The positions that Mount and Havertz pick up will mean our midfield will have to be disciplined.

Granted, Fabinho was playing in defence alongside Kabak and Hendo was out injured at the time in the previous game.

Mane and Salah are a different proposition to last season so Azpe and Rudiger won't be as comfortable this time.

It should be a cracker of a game.

4.) 23 Aug 2021 11:16:39
People are going on about Lukaku and Van Dijk battling but, as John says, the Chelsea man will probably look to play on Matip.
Our full backs need to be careful here, stay tucked in, and play that boring B Tuchel at his own game.
Don’t want to be going one down to Chelsea.

5.) 23 Aug 2021 11:22:18
Lukaku is probably going to try and stay away from van Dijk and target our right sided center back as much as possible. Whilst Konate has more upper body strength than Matip, I'd go with Matip for his superior experience. I think overall he'll handle it better by knowing when to engage Lukaku in a wrestling match and when to just let him have it.

Jota v Bobby is the more interesting question. I'd go Bobby because Jota through the middle is effectively just a poacher. He comes alive in the box, but doesn't do a whole lot otherwise. That's going to be fine in some games, but Chelsea isn't one of them imo. I think Bobby's superior work rate, movement and greater willingness to get involved in the build up play will offset the loss of Jota's superior goal threat. As Pelican says, he could also be useful in restricting Jorginho.

6.) 23 Aug 2021 11:31:18
I'd bring Bobby on for first 75, simply because he's more productive off the ball than Jota. No discredit to Jota mind, he's been excellent since he joined.

7.) 23 Aug 2021 11:34:26
I think a midfield of hendo fab and thiago tops whatever midfield 3 they play. We all know lukaku is going to try and bully matip but matip did well enough against the dirtiness of Barnes and him and virgil have a good partnership. Bringing in konate to form a new partnership in such an important game would be a bad idea for me.

8.) 23 Aug 2021 11:43:37
Think we will beat Chelsea this weekend.

If we have Fabinho back in midfield alongside Hendo then maybe Thiago with Bobby Sadio and Mo up top we will be fine.

9.) 23 Aug 2021 11:59:09
Jota can beat a player which makes a massive difference, Firmino can’t. I don’t agree Firmino has better work rate either. He did 3 years ago but not now. Jota is getting our most important goals and you might only get a couple of chances v Chelsea and by a million miles Jota is the man to take the chances.

{Ed025's Note - im with you mark..

10.) 23 Aug 2021 12:17:20
It'll be interesting to see Tsimikas face Reece James (if Robertson doesn't start) . James did a number on Tierney all game long at Arsenal, so I'd love to see James' play when seeing the scowling Tsimikas coming for him.

11.) 23 Aug 2021 12:02:30
Lukaku's last goal against Liverpool was in 2015. I think he has had a fair few shut outs against us since. If he couldn't score or bully lesser CBs we used to have then I'm pretty confident Vvd and Matip will be fine.

{Ed025's Note - the only thing thats bothering me irish is that virgil may be a bit sensitive after his injury and matip is made of glass as we all know, so even though the german whinger has already got his cries in about rough treatment of his snowflakes romelu could reek havoc mate..

12.) 23 Aug 2021 12:41:58
That's my main concern ed025. I don't want to see Joel getting injured having to try and cope with that man mountain so just neutralise him by using a guy just as big ans as strong as him. Just take him out of the game completely.

{Ed025's Note - you may need a sniper and a grassy knoll for that john mate.. :)

13.) 23 Aug 2021 12:51:53
Well they do reckon that Kennedy was killed by French assassins, we should just use ours.

{Ed025's Note - you could always get bobby to smile them to death john.. :)

14.) 23 Aug 2021 12:59:14
I’m not bothered with VVD nor Matip. Pretty sure Klopp was playing him all this time to get him ready for this game and for me, it is NO game to be throwing in a rookie like Konate in there especially if you don’t have to. That’s just me. Play the guys you have and NEVER change a winning team. The last time Klopp did that, he changed Thiago for Keita for Madrid away last season after he bossed Arsenal off the pitch on their patch, for the disaster we all know of so why are people asking him to do that again?

And by the way, Matip has dealt with Lukaku before and shut him down easily (you can add Aguero, Suarez, Lewandowski, Kane, Diego Costa and oh, that Messi dude to his rap sheet of victims) so what would change? Even Sloveen and Sakho shut Lukaku up in the so again, what’s the problem? If you’re scared then don’t watch the game. It’s that simple.

{Ed025's Note - im sure you will be one of the many oli...hiding behind the couch watching the game through your fingers..

15.) 23 Aug 2021 13:36:00
Personally think cutting off the supply to Lukaku is more critical than which centre backs play against him. With our pressing game and the positional awareness of Hendo/ Fab I can see him feeding off scraps. Certainly shouldn't be having 30 yard passes rolled into his feet on the edge of the box the way he did against Arsenal.

16.) 23 Aug 2021 13:49:39
He bullied Lovren and Fabs when he played for Man U. But I am very confident Chelsea won’t be able to handle us going forward.

17.) 23 Aug 2021 14:11:40
In fairness, Larry Grayson could bully Lovren and Fabinho isn’t a centre back. Matip handled Diego ‘Mongo’ Costa pretty well and I think Lukaku isn’t much difference physically.

{Ed025's Note - lukakaku makes costa look like larry mate..

18.) 23 Aug 2021 14:34:12
Yes VVD is back from a bad injury and matip is knowing for injuries but it isn't the ufc lukaku isn't trying to injury players ask matip and VVD how they feel and they will both be eager to start and deal with the return of lukaku and if they don't Allison's no mug

Just need to be bang at it and hopefully get fabinho in front of them will be a massive help

Fabinho will snif around his first touch and hopefully he has a day where its not great as its not excatly his strength

The midfield is important against Chelsea are fabinho thaigo and hendo 100% ready for this type of game after not playing yet.

{Ed025's Note - thats the $64,000 question dezy..

19.) 23 Aug 2021 15:39:59
You stop Lukaku right from the attack and midfield, so this would be Bobby and Fabinho's game. But I won't touch the back four at all until after the international break. Play Fabinho, Hendo and NabyLad in the middle; Jota in for Bobby around 70 minutes in.

20.) 25 Aug 2021 07:49:08
Mark, not true. Lovren shut Lukaku down when we blew out Everton 4-0 in 2016. Shut him down in both games vs Everton in 16/ 17. As for Fab, when did that happen cos Fab never played CB for us till last season and Lukaku was at Inter? So again, you are making up stuff.

Ed002,

Interested to know how Spurs are able to manage their debt, and how much of an impact them falling out of the regular Champions' League spots have impacted that ability.

Man city have scored 1 goal in 3 games against this Chelsea lot. They have some of the best, organised defenders on the planet. Should we have done better yes, but the toy throwing on here is laughable.

To be fair ed025, on paper, our cover for the front 3 over the last 3 years were hardly amazing but they always pulled it put of the bag. Takes me back to the 80s, when cover for the first eleven was hardly anything to write home about but they did a job playing in the right system. Same with some of United periods under Fergie.

James in the same league as Trent is the same when you said that Pickford was at Ali's level Ed025; You do have to appreciate the Scouse sense of humour.

johnzandt

{Ed025's Note - i still maintain there is not much between them john, trent is great going forward and his crosses are quality most of the time, but defensively he gets caught out of position at times and is prone to the odd brain fart, james has a solid all around game mate..
