Hi ED001, can you please provide an insight how footballers keep themselves in shape during holidays.

Also, if you have time then please guide what any young aspiring footballer should eat in his daily diet and avoid? I have read your responses like Nathaniel Clyne not disciplined enough in his lifestyle which is why he gets injured more times than others so how can this be avoided?

{Ed001's Note - these days they tend to spend time down the gym while on holiday and swim and run on a daily basis. In the past, players used to literally just slob out and relax, mainly getting Jack Grealished in a gutter somewhere abroad, but these days most are much more professional now. They are usually given an exercise and diet plan to follow as well.

Certainly at Liverpool Mona provides them with a full diet plan and will also provide them with meals too, as she is also a chef on top of a dietician/nutritionist. Gone are the days, at least at the top level, of players being left to their own devices. I know there were quite a few errors made by footballers in the past as most are not the brightest of souls. There was one (I can't remember who it was now) who decided he would be careful over the summer and go on a fruit diet throughout the time off. Unfortunately he chose to only eat bananas, which are extremely high in sugar, and came back from his holidays well overweight!

The key is moderation, there is nothing wrong with them taking a rest, but they have to remember that the body will soon start to lose fitness when they do so. If I recall correctly, it is 48 hours of indolence before basic fitness will start to fall and it takes a bit longer to regain fitness than the rest period, depending on age and genetics just how long. Usually a week or two rest won't do them any harm, but longer than that and they are going to have to work hard to regain fitness in time for the start of next season, with it being such a short gap this year.

The problem is that genetics make it impossible to give an overall answer, each of us is different and have different needs. Some bodies will process salt more easily than others, others will require more Vit C, while another might need more Vit D. If you are a young, aspiring footballer, the best thing to do would be to visit a good nutritionist and have yourself tested to establish your individual needs and requirements. It is something you should really do regularly as well, because your needs and requirements will change.

There are simple little things you can bear in mind that are good guides, such as if you have a high sugar/salt/alcohol intake then you can counter that with foods such as lemons and limes. The citric acid will help the liver deal with them. Though it is obviously better to keep those intakes within moderation as an athlete, the mental benefits of enjoying a break from watching what you eat and drink can be just as beneficial as strictly monitoring it. Especially if they are for special occasions such as family gatherings etc, where the boosts for your mental wellbeing can be huge and it can give you a reason to then go and train harder following it, to work off the drink etc.

The problem with people like Clyne is that they live like a rock star, thinking they are celebrities rather than athletes, and so moderation is not a part of their thinking. He will have a day off training and use it to jet abroad with a group of hangers on and some Instagram 'models' then they party all day and night. Having the right amount and type of rest is just as important as the training you do. If you are up all night partying every night, then you are sleeping the broken sleep of a drunk and not getting proper rest so your body can restore and prepare itself for more exercise. Eventually it catches up to you.

By the way, I know it is not something Brits tend to have, but afternoon naps/siestas are extremely beneficial to athletes.}

Think Essien used to sleep 14 hrs a day. Gazza probably 14hrs a week.

Afternoon naps? I knew i was an athlete!

{Ed001's Note - it's the man bun that gave it away....}

I think you're making a patsy out of Clyne. Crazy.

Speaking of health maintenance, what amazes me, Ed001, is the amount of players who smoke cigarettes. Being a lifelong smoker (almost) myself, and knowing the limitations it has placed on me as a result, I am amazed that so many top level athletes have, and/ or still smoke, and gotten away with it with not too much damage to their careers. When you read the names like Cruyff, Socrates, Zidane, Rooney, Gascoigne, Sneijder, Buffon, Berbatov etc., etc, it boggles the mind.

{Ed001's Note - it always amazes me too. I will never understand it but there you go. You forget Hamann though!}

Speaking of Nathaniel Clyne, I knew a girl who dated him. He would spend a lot of his downtime (even during the season) traveling all over the place partying

7.) 28 Jul 2020 18:37:34
Hamann smoked. Didi, really?

8.) 28 Jul 2020 18:55:08
And Frank Rijkaard.

9.) 28 Jul 2020 18:57:16
Oh and I forgot. I was once at the Conti club in Liverpool (don't know if it still exists) and Slaven Bilic was there, smoking.

{Ed025's Note - i used to go there in the 80,s epic, during the mating season.. :)

Our own David James and Mario Balotelli smoke too. 😶.

I was in a Bootle pub one Saturday just after an England game in Manchester was played. In walks Carragher calm as you like to join his mates. Nobody made a fuss, just a polite nod. I imagined if that was Beckham in a London bar after an international, the papers would have had a field day.

James and Balotelli smoked during the game when they were with us.
