Hi Eds thanks for all the work you do. I thought I would give you a break from all the transfer questions and bring up a the new changes to VAR.

Here is what Mike Riley had to say about penalties:

"So, the principles we've established are referees should look for contact, and establish clear contact, then ask themselves the does question 'does that contact have a consequence? '. And then ask themselves the question 'has the player used that contact to actually try and win a penalty?"

I think these are obviously good ideas to eliminate soft penalties, but you introduce to variables that are subject to opinions and I imagine we are still going to get inconsistent and silly penalty decisions from refs. I think there does need to be more criteria to think about.

Does the attacking player have the ball under control?
Is the player moving away or towards the goal?
Is the player in a goal scoring position or likely to lead to a goal scoring opportunity?

There are other things, but I can not think of them, since it is to early. I remember the penalty Robbo gave away against Brighton, there was definite contact. But was Danny Welbeck in any of those positions. I found this penalty pretty frustrating from what I remember. I think this rule should hopeful help us this season as we gave away a number of soft penalties.

Also the offside lines getting widened should hopefully help us as well as again we seemed to have a few goals chalked off for minor toenail offsides. It would be interesting if anyone has stats for goals disallowed for Liverpool and against Liverpool with VAR.

And Harry Kane type fouls will be given against the attacker (backing into defender then falling over) .

Or then again all these things could even themselves out and not effect us at all. Do you think us or our rivals will be effected majorly by any of these changes?

Kane and Grealish should cost less now.

Until we get the actual standard of refs sorted in this country no rule change will help anything. The difference between what we see in the league and what we see in European competitions or the euros is frightening.

{Ed025's Note - i agree mate..

I would love to be able to utilise european refs in the PL not all are great but they would improve the standard for sure. A league system could also work both teams rate the ref after the game from 1-3 points relegate and promote through the leagues.

Spot on, Hijkle. They are trying to put lipstick on a pig by tweaking the VAR rules instead of fixing the main issue as in, the rank incompetence of PL refs. I’m not buying it cos even if the tweaks are done in good faith, if you have incompetent officials executing the new rules, the outcome will be the same: A complete ship show.

It's still positive if they are trying to reduce the number of soft penalties. In terms of the additional questions I think it would be over complicating it and wouldn't help. I'll explain why I think so anyway:

Does the attacking player have the ball under control? - a foul is a foul even if the attacker is just running towards the ball.

Is the player moving away or towards the goal? - again not sure how that's relevant as the lines of the box are what matter, if you push someone over for example in the box with them running towards the corner flag then it's foolish defending and still a penalty.

Is the player in a goal scoring position or likely to lead to a goal scoring opportunity. - again, the lines of the box are what is relevant.

All in all, they are trying to improve so I for one am happy with that, not expecting everything to be solved/ fixed at any stage but improvement would be good.

Is the secret footballer blog and books worth a read. Just wondering if it's actually interesting and/or has some credibility?

Its dave kitson talking a load of rubbish, don't waste your money.

Hi mate the book is definitely worth a read. Couldn't help but feel one of the managers he spoke (poorly) about was Rodgers. He also goes into the nitty gritty of playing in secondary divisions and battling demons and addictions. Very interesting and different to other paint by numbers autobiographies.

Cheers Ed. Probably a big promotion after only being the academy director for a year.

What do you reckon of Alex Inglethorpe, as an assistant manager? Just wondering, since Ibe said he is going to work on his shooting with him, not sure if that indicates anything, but I thought the Eds would know more about the role of an academy director or I guess that he just has a good working relationship with Ibe and used to be a striker.

{Ed001's Note - I would not want to move away from the academy personally.}

Yeah, I just found his profile on the liverpool website:
Pepijn Lijnders was appointed coach of Liverpool U16s in August 2014, assuming the reins from Michael Beale. He switched to Merseyside from FC Porto, having also spent time with PSV Eindhoven.

Hopefully might help bringing through more young players, if the above is true.

{Ed001's Note - cheers, I never even thought of checking the offal site doh.}

I was over there in Doha in August for work. I think it is worth mentioning construction projects are getting rushed over there not just the stadiums. Hospitals etc.

The Lebanese guy I was with told me he had seen someone die in the heat a few weeks ago. I know I could only stand the heat for tops 5 minutes, never mind working in it. I drove past the final were the stadium is being held and there were still finishing off the outside of the stadium.

The way immigrants are treated over there and the inequality based on where you come from is so backwards on so many levels.

I do worry whether they are prepared for crowd control required.

I know they did a study in baseball and look at the majority of players birth days, where always earlier on in the school year.

Something similar probably happened in football. I remember lots of lads who played for Liverpool schoolboys in our year in school. There was one lad who was incredible when we were all 13-15, he was bigger, stronger, taller and faster than everyone else. Everyone thought he would make it at Liverpool. Only problem was this lad had a birthday in September and was also an early bloomer. I think a lot of us who were smaller and born later on in the year only started to catch him up when we got to 16.

You can look really class in the younger age groups just owing to the fact that you are physically a bit more developed as you are older.

Just watched that documentary this morning Ed. Not sure whether I am shocked or just not surprised.

Feeding off a young kid's dream to make money is so despicable, hopefully he at least gets a decent punishment.

{Ed001's Note - it is something that was well known he was doing, he did the same with Sterling himself.}

Nice read Ed. Managed to watch Match of The Day this morning as well. Difficulty to tell how we played with highlights and radio commentary, but sounded like we played really well.

Agreed with all VAR decisions from what I could see. Ed025 definitely a foul on Calvert-Lewin for me yday, clearly stopped from getting into a goal scoring position. Those ones are similar to what Harry Maguire got away with a few times last year, stone wall penalties for me.

It is an incredible hard injury to come back from. I just had my ACL reconstructed on Monday. I think people should be grateful if they only come back at 50-80%. He has been out since October, I would not expect VV to find his feet until at least September, maybe longer. The big thing is not to rush them back into it otherwise you just risk reinjuring it.
