Reliable reports from a highly respected journalist in Portugal and a few of their newspapers stating that Liverpool are very interested in Manuel Ugarte.

It would make sense, the ideal Fabinho replacement. Averages about 7 interceptions + tackles a game (which is absolutely insane btw) . Looks similar to Palhinha from Fulham who is an excellent player.

Also has the agent of Jorge Mendes who the club regularly use due to strong links to Portugal. I think the relationship between the club and him is rather good (based on how many players we get offered of his etc) .

Mac Allister and one of Ugarte and Thuram would be an excellent start to the summer. Hopefully it gets done, Klopp spoke positively of his meeting with John Henry and said that they understand they need to sign the right players.

Exciting times!

We can only hope that we have the funds to make some significant signings.

I think making the right signings is so important this summer and nothing I am seeing or hearing is making me feel confident that will happen. I am more than ready to be truly non plussed by the players we bring in. I really do believe that there is no plan and the scatter gun approach is being used instead of identifying true targets snd doing what it takes to bring them in. I mean would anyone really be buzzing if we signed Mc Alister? He is boring mate and has already reached his peak of potential imo. Yes he would make up the numbers but we need more than that. I am worried let’s put it that way.

I think we should just spend more money than everybody else - that’s always a guarantee of success.

I think similarly. These aren’t going to be massive game changers or really stand out performers. It also concerns me that we have so much to do in midfield other areas of the field are going to be severely hampered.
There is no talk of an actual right back coming in (I know Ramsey is there but I’d hope he’s not got digestive legs)
We also need a CB possibly 2 Gomez isn’t up to it, Billy Joel (32) and Konate seem to flip flop dependent upon who’s fit (Billy Joel is being linked with a move away) and VVD will be 32 next year so we need to be planning for this not having them all move out are together again.
When I think of the midfielder’s we’re linked with I often think would kids get this players name on their jerseys - e really need top class midfielders.

{Ed001's Note - we don't need a right-back. Why would we? Bradley is more than good enough.}

You can’t say Bradley is good enough based on performances in league 1 over 1 season - that’s a bit premature.

So on what you’re saying you’d have no prob pitching Bradley full back next year v Martinelli, Saka, Mitoma, Son, Grealish, Foden, Zaha etc. I’ve seen 3 or 4 games this year involving Bolton but i definitely wouldn’t be taking my chances with RBs of Trent, Bradley and Ramsey.

Redbohs why you writing Bradley off, even before he as been given a chance? No doubt your one of these that's slags Jones off at every chance.

@Str8talker

YES! I would be absolutely buzzing if we signed Mcallister.

I think most fans would?

Prem proven centre midfielder? Yes. Hardworking? Yes. Technically very good? Yes. Can press and win possession? Yes. World Cup winner? Yes.

{Ed025's Note - hes quality navy..

If you aren’t excited about the prospect of signing Mac Allister then I don’t think you realise how good he is. The guy is excellent for Brighton and often outshines his counterpart, Caicedo, who is also an excellent midfielder.

He’s versatile and can play anywhere in the midfield, he’s started as a CAM, LCM and a CDM for them all season and is effective in each role. He would be a huge upgrade on what we have. Technically secure, press resistant and has an excellent pass on him. He’s also no slouch defensively either.

One of the main reasons Brighton are so effective at keeping the ball and passing through phases.

When i see fans on here putting their opinions across of the summer signings. They mention these Beast midfielders that would’ve undoubtedly made us a force this season had we got them!
But the teams above and around us will evolve in summer too. Man City will spend another £200m. Arsenal will spend massive to build on this success. New owners at Man United will outspend everyone and get the likes of Harry Kane etc
If Newcastle get top four they’ll start to get world class players in.

Look at the damage not signing midfielders last summer did, we need to fix all last summer/ Januarys neglect. And then also fix the defence which is what This summer should’ve been.
That’s 5 players in the starting line up, no chance.

It’s going to take 3 years.

Mightyreds - We don’t need projects. We need starters or players capable of pushing 1st teamers like City have with Walker/ Lewis/ Akanje.

Simmo01 thanks for your insight but it’s talking hypothetically fullback v winger in case you failed to notice. Also wingers do tend to switch sides fullbacks don’t.

Liverpoolfc8 I couldn’t agree more. We have stood still in so many positions while others have evolved it’s frightening. We are way behind in midfield and will take some serious effort to hit the ground running in August. But we may well have the same issues next year at CB.

Re Bradley v Martinelli, Son, Mitoma etc
Yeah giving debuts to teenage right backs against someone say like prime Giggs away at OT would be a disaster waiting to happen.

And Curtis Jones isn’t the player who will take us from where we are to where we want to be.

TAA, Ramsey, Bradley Gomez Van den Berg, it’s obvious that we are crying out for a tight sided defender.

I presume the club had a plan for Bradley - hence the sending him out on loan this season to get competitive game time and to ‘learn his trade’ - which with 40 odd games will have gone a long way to achieving the goals (same with Morton and the 30 odd games he played before getting injured. So, having put a plan in place to bring young lads with obvious potential in place and having followed through on the plan it seems really obvious to me that we now go out and spend 20 - 30 million on a right (wing) back.
