Hi eds and fellow reds,

Would greatly appreciate your opinion on who you would rather start left back moreno or smith?

personally i'd rather smith, moreno has no end product and his defending is atrocious, against stoke he let walters run off him numerous times . the less said about the norwich penalty the better. I think people only rate him because of his pace and the speed he gets up and down the line.

Eds your opinion would be greatly because once you mention a players flaws it makes it much easier for the untrained eye to notice.

{Ed001's Note - Smith, though he still needs to work on his defending as well, he is much better positionally. Moreno is offering very little bar silly errors at the moment.}

Smith LB and when he is ready to go (although seems like he already is), Flannagan RB would be my choice.

Moreno has no end product? Most chances created by any defender. With a decent striker, he'd probably have a 4 or 5 assists. I like smith, but don't think he's really an upgrade on Moreno at all, he didn't do brilliantly against West Ham. Moreno was poor against Stoke, but generally this season I think he's been on of our more consistent performers.

{Ed001's Note - how many good quality chances has he created compared to how many times he has got into a position to provide them? His delivery is awful.}

I agree his deliveries are can be frustrating, but I think you've also got to blame part of that on a lack of movement when Benteke plays, and a lack of physical presence on crosses when Firmino plays.

{Ed001's Note - why? His crosses are not going into an area they can attack them anyway. You don't need a physical presence to score from crosses if they are of a decent quality.}

Smith's balls into the box have been superb when he's played this year. I also think he's less of a defensive liability. I could see us selling Moreno in the summer (to Real), and then hopefully promoting smith to first choice.

Moreno would do great at Real, the overall defending in La Liga is dreadful.

Well if you have a striker making a run, it's a lot easier to know where he wants it and where to put it, than if he's stood still. He's got something like 45 chances created, and only 1 or 2 assists, I'm only saying that at least a dozen or so of them must have been of enough quality, for them to have been taken.

{Ed001's Note - I think if you go back and watch, more like 3 or 4 are of enough quality.}

That is a strange defence of Moreno's awful crossing. So it's the striker's fault for not having Go-Go-Gadget neck or legs?

The fact is, Moreno has very poor passing accuracy and crossing completion % as well as a tendency to go walkabout.
He can look good for a couple of games but then returns to old habits. Personally, I don't see what he has that Smith doesn't have and unless he gets consistently better, he'll be on my list of players to be replaced this summer.

Thanks for the reply ed,

My choice would be smith as well, every match you watch moreno he's using his pace to cover for his positioning then lungs in with a last ditch tackle it has disaster written all over it. He pulls out of tackles all the time and when blocking crosses he turns his back on the ball. I think smith with games would become much more solid. Technically his crosses are 100 times better. I feel morenos time is ticking.

If he isn't dropped where going to have the same problem under klopp as we did rodgers that the players with the big name are keeping their positions over the younger better players.

I think Smith should be first choice solely because of that penalty Moreno gave up at Norwich, who does that?

Moreno has cost us so many goals since he got here that it`s no use counting them. he is a walking, talking mistake waiting to happen. That can be summed up in one brainless sequence (of which there a many) where he fouled naismith TWICE in the box for the pen vs Norwich. there are so many errors in that sequence alone that it is too painful to enumerate. he is poor and this is why we are interested in Rafael Guerero at the moment. he was never a good defender and BR knew this but again, his stubbornness has cost us. Smith is still young and is able to learn but I agree, he is the best crosser we have. Blaming benteke for Moreno`s inability to cross the ball is ludicrous. I know Benteke is not the flavor of the month but blaming him for everything is becoming embarassing and unfair, IMO.

As soon as Moreno gets into a decent position to put a cross in, you just know he's going to fire in a low cross, straight into a defender and then struggle to get back down the pitch in time to deal with the counter attack. every time!
