I've seen lots of posts recently regarding our goalkeeping situation. For me the first thing we need to do is get rid of Achterberg and bring in a new coach. Reina was arguably the second best keeper in the league, then in comes Achterberg and his form is horrendous for 2 seasons. Mignolet is by no means a grwat keeper but surely he should have shown some improvement, he is making the same mistake everyone, which to me shows that the coaches are not actually improving the mental side if his game. So step one has to be change of coach.
If we decide to by in the summer I would look to the Bundesliga. (Watch it a bit on BT) I know there's talk in the press of Ter Stegen, but for me 20mil is a risk there are keepers with just as much potential but who would cost a lot less. Personally I'm pleased we are linked with Karius, it might just be the Klopp-Mainz link but if it is genuine interest then I'd be happy as he has impressed this season. I would also look at Horn as a potential signing. Then there's keepers like Zeiler, Baumann and Leno (but apparently Real are interested in him) . Any of these would be a vast improvement on what we have.

Totally agree popa, both karius and horn would cost at least half of ter stegen pethaps a little more.

I have to agree- there's no point buying a new young keeper if the gk coach is not going to improve him- and achterberg hasn't improved any of the keepers at lpool.
Interesting that ward hit good form after going out on loan- ie away from achterberg.
To us amateurs it appears obvious that the gk coach is not producing results, but is actually making the keepers worse- so why don't the club see things the same way?

perhaps we could make a banner! anonymush, joking aside you're spot on mate, we need a proper shake up in the goalkeeping department, achterberg was an average keeper himself so he has not got the credentials required to be coaching Liverpool fc goalkeepers. the results speak for themselves.

Hi Ed001

As a fan in his twenties with admittedly no in depth knowledge on goalkeepers of a previous era other than YouTube and old videos when I was younger I still have to question why you reckon goalies and defenders are much worse these days? I mean if you look back at the results of fixtures in the 70s you see games that are won 7-2 and 8-4 and all of these ridiculous scorelines. Surely that indicates that they couldn't of been that much better defensively? Or was it due to lack of tactics etc.? I mean I see clips of people like Barnes and all these great dribbles of the ball and take nothing away from them cause they were amazing but in a lot of clips you barely see a defender even throw in a tackle they just let them glide by like nothing. I don't know it's hard to doubt the level of quality was different between now and then without being around but I guess what I'm mostly interested in is what in your opinion what was it that caused such huge scorelines which we don't see as often today?

Thanks for the thread. Really interesting read.

{Ed001's Note - tactics is the main thing, players are not given the freedom they were, they are held in rigid systems. When you see big scores there is always a breakdown in the system that results in it. Plus it helps playing on better pitches, so many goals were the result of bobbly pitches that you can probably rule out a large proportion because of that. Mainly though it is a more defensive system mindset. Teams play with more defensive players than in the past. Even now they have gone more attacking with the fullbacks, everyone puts a defensive midfielder in to cover any gaps. There is also the problem of the modern defender having to cope with rule changes making it much more difficult to use physical tactics to defend. You used to be able to kick an attacker until he could barely run.}

Errm Barcelona/ RM cricket scores lately in Spain . BM in Germany .
The gulf in class between top and bottom in the prem has obviously closed, in Spain, France and Germany it persists.
It's not a isolated season it's going to get messy -stoke, WH, Leicester and others are shaking up the mighty Quo
Big 4 is now about 8 strong.
