Afternoon eds n reds

Dont know if its in the news or not but my local club, Swindon hope to have Robbie Fowler as manager. Someone i know who works there has told me they want to get it done qiuckly. They are 'in discussion' as we speak.

I met him back in 1997 or 98 and he came across as a quiet chap but a good sense of humour. Mind you, he had to be with the team he was playing with that day.

Ed1, whay do you think about him as a manager.

{Ed001's Note - I don't know mate, he has never really been tested in a good league. The problem I see with him is that the game came natural to him, so he might not know how to teach others.}

I hope he realisrs what a crap owner Power is. Disliked by the local press, fans and players.

He is trying to sell the club even though some of it is owned by someone else.

Interesting view point that, Ed. Perhaps players like (for example) Carra and Hendo are better management material as they had to really work at their game to get to a certain level, Klopp being a prime example. Whereas players who had so much natural ability struggled as managers - Maradona for example?

It'd be a great thesis project for someone to properly investigate whether there is a correlation between natural ability (however you would measure that?! ) and managerial ability.

I'm sure there's plenty of examples that both prove and disprove the theory but I wonder if there is any statistical correlation.?

Cruyff, Busby, Guardiola, Ancelotti, King Kenny are a few great players turned managers off the top of my head.

Pep was not a great player, IMO.

{Ed001's Note - it is irrelevant whether they were great or not, black47 has completely missed the point. It is about whether it came natural to them or they had to work at it. In Cruyff's case, technique and skill etc came natural to him but he then spent his time trying to learn the tactical side, rather than just settling for being a great player.

Guardiola was definitely not naturally skilful, he worked with Cruyff to become the player he was, mainly regarding the tactical side.}
