Am I correct in saying it was the same official on VAR duty for the Arsenal penalty decision and the city decision ?.

And people will still argue that the prem is not corrupt! We are literally watching our beautiful game get destroyed in front of us and there’s nothing we can do about it. And this rant isn’t about Liverpool this is about all football in the prem.

David Coote is a disaster and the level of incompetence is just insane. I don't know any other employer would accept such a standard in any industry. I think whatever the directive from Howard Webb may have been with respect to not 're-refeering the game', the first thing a VAR does is to find ways by which they aren't required to ask the main referee to change their decision instead of looking at the situation objectively.

Also I don't understand why a referee doesn't ever stick to their own decision when asked to go the monitor? I remember in a champions league game against Atletico Madrid, the VAR asked the referee to go to the monitor on a penalty decision and after review, he stuck to his original decision. If they are always going to agree to VAR in Premiere League, what is the point of wasting extra minutes and going to the pitch side monitor? I would rather cut the delay in such a case.

Putting aside all the tinhat stuff. Are we saying that both incidents are handball?
What if the ref in their review took the learning from that mistake and then made the call in City game?

The irony for me is that the Onana one was very harsh in comparison to Odegaard.

13.) 28 Dec 2023
28 Dec 2023 21:57:50
Faith, what is there to learn? And even if they did, then I would expect they have to come out and admit they made a mistake and apologise, otherwise the ‘learning’ along the season is just inconsistency. Oh, and it would have been more possible that they did ‘learn’ did they haven’t first come out to defend their awful decision, that isn’t a sign of learning.

14.) 28 Dec 2023
28 Dec 2023 22:19:50
What do they have to defend? What was the awful decision? Most handballs in the box are unintentional, the handball against the Everton player is given all the time in the CL every time, his hand is up, it’s a penalty. Wait until the next time Liverpool play a team and something similar happens. You will be screaming handball from the rafters.

15.) 28 Dec 2023
28 Dec 2023 22:40:43
Sgynwa - bit difficult to follow what you’re saying here. So are we saying that Onana’s shouldn’t have been a handball because Odegaard’s wasn’t called a pen?

16.) 29 Dec 2023
28 Dec 2023 23:53:28
Onanas wasnt a pen, he's 3/ 4 feet away, he's sliding, well below normal height, his arm is already in that posistion, the ball is hit with pace, not ennough thinking time to react. What criteria did it meet to say pen? it hit his hand. It is for CITEH though isn't it.

17.) 29 Dec 2023
29 Dec 2023 00:19:17
We probably would be screaming for it Irish, the difference is that it wouldn’t be given. Not that that it should be as it was at point blank range, blasted at Onana and given that Onana was committed to a challenge (a fair one) his hand was in a natural position, unlike Odegaard who literally controlled the ball with his hand, or Jackson who attempted to play volley ball to ball he could easily have headed or chested.

At the moment it feels like an opponent could literally pick the ball up, wipe it in dog muck, wipe it in the refs face against us and the ref would wave play on as would VAR. There’s absolutely no reason to have any confidence in the referees or the imbeciles in charge of them.

18.) 29 Dec 2023
29 Dec 2023 03:48:18
I’m simply saying they are inconsistent and the so called ‘rules’ and ‘rationale’ they have explained themselves makes it all the more confusing and they are constantly shooting them selves in the foot

1) if they want to invoke the considerations of proximity, natural position and mitigating circumstances (eg player falling), then Onana has a better claim that he’s wasn’t a pen given the explanation they have recently given
2) however, they failed to follow up with their recently made up ‘rationale’ and awarded a pen against Onana, who in my opinion has a better claim that it shouldn’t be given given their new ‘rationale’, why was it given?

If the Onana incident happened against us, will I shout for a pen? Sure thing! But given the recent rationale, I would be slightly worried it may not be given. But as of now, since City has gotten it, I expect all other similar situations to be treated the same. But something tells me I will hear more about ‘proximity’ and ‘mitigating circumstances’ again.

Listen I thought that players crowding the referee was to be dealt with harshly after onana penalty how man City players chased the referee down then all of a sudden he gave the penalty no way on this earth was that a penalty and I like seening Everton get beat especially pickford VAR is meant for clear and obvious mistakes well if it's a mistake surely that's clear enough listen get rid of ferggies puppet AKA Howard webb it's went tits up since he took over any mistakes made he tries to justify them and why not ounosh referees more.

Based on the last 3 years of performances, Tierney, Coote and Hooper should never officiate LFC games. Sadly, nothing will happen about it.

21.) 29 Dec 2023
29 Dec 2023 08:30:24
Isn't that the point of the OP's question Irish Rover?

Why wasn't the Odegaard pen given whilst the City one was?

If both were given or both were not given, at least the outcome would be consistent, but how does the same guy get away with both calls that were made?

22.) 29 Dec 2023
29 Dec 2023 10:12:37
It’s not the same guy tho, they were different refs. One gave no pen, the other didn’t, VAR didn’t see enough of an error to overturn the ref. My opinion is that the Everton one is more of a pen than the Arsenal one but if the roles were reversed then I don’t think VAR would have got involved either.
The “clear and obvious error” thing is a bit murky but even if you took away VAR completely you might still get 2 different outcomes anyway by two diff Referees.
Last season every handball was given in the box and people still complained ?‍♂️.
