Ed001, if or when you're about, what are your thoughts on Joe Gomez making an Dier-style move forward into midfield?

He played their for the u21's in their first game this international break just gone and by all accounts he was decent there. He certainly has the legs to get about, the ability on the ball, and would be astute covering our marauding wing backs.

Just a hypothetical question really. Would it suit him, and is it something you could ever see Klopp trying? (bearing in mind Klopp doesn't play with a defensive midfielder very often)

Be interested to hear from SquareTomato on this as well.

{Ed001's Note - I have no doubt he could do the role, he is good on the ball, intelligent in his play and has the work ethic required, but I would prefer to see him play in defence. Putting aside the fact we don't play with a player like that in midfield, I just think he is a natural defender and should be playing there. I really can't see Klopp ever using it, if he did then it would be because we are struggling badly and need to change something.}

That's why I think we need to sign up Can again - we don't have a natural alternative to Hendo there. until Keita joins but even then I'd rather he plays box to box as he's so good at carrying the ball forward.

SGRed, in pre season Klopp used Gini there. So when Can and Coutinho leave, i expect Gini to cover Henderson in the deeper role with Keita, Lallana, Chamberlain and possibly Woodburn fighting for the two advanced midfield positions. I say possibly Woodburn because if he isn't ready by the time Coutinho leaves, i think we'll go in for Meyer or possibly return for Lemar.

I'll be gutted to lose Can though. I think he'll become world class at Juventus.

Thanks for the reply Ed001. Appreciate your thoughts!

{Ed001's Note - welcome mate. You are right about Gini, he used him a couple of times there at the end of last season, while Hendo was out injured, as well.}

We might buy a player if Can leaves. Lemar might come in for Coutinho. Keita is an addition like AOX.

It is obvious for all to see that Klopp rates Keita immensely, therefore expect him, Mane and Firmino to be the first three names of the sheet for next season. Keita, first name in midfield for next season.

To be fair to Gini Ed, he just gets on with it no matter where he is played. He actually looked solid in the holding role every time i saw him there. I'd have no concerns over him and Henderson fighting for the position. In my mind, our midfield is sorted for at least 5 years when Keita joins. Lallana and Ox will supplement what is a very good selection of players. What with Woodburn, Chirivella and Ejaria all coming through maybe at least 1 of them will also become a first team player too over the next 3 years. Maybe even Arnolds future is in midfield!

I've no concerns there anyway; with or without Can or Coutinho. My bug bear is Grujic. I don't see a future for him at the club, but i really want him to succeed here. I just feel that if Can can't catch a break, Grujic has no chance either. I think all 3 will go next summer. I know you also see Couts and Can going Ed001, but what about Grujic? Has he got an LFC future in your opinion?

{Ed001's Note - I think Grujic has this season to decide that, but the one I would worry about is Ejaria. I do not see anything in him to suggest he will make it with us.}

Thanks mate. And i agree with Ejaria. He is a lesser player than Brannagan even in my opinion, but Klopp really seems to like him. Brannagan is another still at the club though so in theory he still has a very slim chance of fighting his way back into Klopps plans!

Thanks for your insight on these subjects though mate! Great job as always. Except when we disagree! Then, bad job 😉.

{Ed001's Note - thanks MKS, I think....}
