Have any of you watched Gomez play lately? He’s a liability and we should get what we can for him and wave him off. Why we rejected a £20m plus offer from Gerrard when he was at Villa is beyond me. Whether it is injuries, confidence or just lack of awareness of what is required at this level, he’s not getting back to the form he showed earlier in his career.

Can't imagine there are many players who would get back to their best with this kind of support

Anyways, we've made ourselves a club that doesn't just cast players aside like a piece of meat. It has its pitfalls obviously, but overall, I think we should be proud of that.

In Gomez last game against relegated Southampton he let a bang average player who doesn't score run from the half way line to the edge of the area backing off instead of closing him down or showing him wide, allowing said bang average Championship player to score and look like Messi.

Redmersey has it right in my opinion. Gomez isn't going to get back to his best on a cushy £85k a week where he only has to make 10-20 appearances a season in Europa League and Domestic Cup games. Nothing is expected of him as a 4th choice centre back which I believe allows him to back out of tackles instead of risking his knee. Klopp also got really angry at him in the 5-2 Madrid game for doing the same thing with Vinicius, instead of getting closer to him and then he did the same in the 2nd half when Modric and Benzema were coming forward on their zimmer frames. Against Napoli Gomez had to be hooked at HT with us 4-0 down, and 3 of the goals being at least partially his fault.

Virgil was doing exactly the same too by the way. Backed off Sancho and let him pass it in, backed off Modric and Benzema in the same instance, backed off Outtara against Bournemouth and pointed at Robbo to defend for him. If they don't trust their knees in a head on tackle players will keep waltzing past them or getting close enough to goal to shoot without even going around them.

Thunderbird does make a fair point though. Gomez has looked much better as a right back in the last couple of years. If he were staying as back up to Trent then that's not the end of the world, but he has more bad games at CB than good. He has it in him, because he was excellent against Haaland in one game last season, but then proceeded to follow that with awful games including against Forest where he randomly dragged a player down on half way and then lost his man from the resulting free kick for them to score. You don't win titles with players like that in the heart of the defence. He is not the same player he was in 2019. Neither is Virgil or Matip for that matter and we either need to build around Konate and sign him a new partner (Schuurs maybe? ) or simply sign a whole new partnership if Konate's muscle injuries won't go away.

I'm a Liverpool fan before I'm a Gomez fan. When you're at the top of the sport you have to take the Criticism that comes with the £4.4m a year salary. The bleeding hearts routine wears very thin on passionate fans who want to see players putting their bodies on the line in the same way they would if they had one iota of the talent these guys were blessed with.

MKS, chill with the OTT over Gomez in a dead rubber game where he (along side Matip and Kellerher) had not played a single game for weeks. Kellerher had not played a competitive game for 4/ 5 months, especially. How people can rate his performance based on a dead rubber game is baffling to me BUT to each his own idea of analysis.

Listen, Im not saying Gomez will be back to his best cos his best was easily 3 years ago. Same as VVD. Nor am I saying both cannot get back to near their best moving forward either. At the end of the day, nobody really knows diddly squat

So let's just (as Faithinworks said), support the all boys and hope they can still perform at a good level cos their natural talent is not in question at all, IMO. The constant player bashing (esp. those who have been great for us bot struggling now) needs to stop, frankly. It's not helping.

He is bad though unless playing RB I can’t remember seeing too many centre backs as clueless as him and in that position he is horrible. At RB he seems to look a different player. Like the guy don’t get me wrong but he was always a bench player and I respect his contribution over the years even though it has been mostly poor performances.

Oli, it's not player bashing it's just a discussion on a football forum. If it was a one word hyperbole analysis along the lines of "Gomez is the worst player ever" then you'd be correct, but it's not. People are discussing why they think we need to upgrade, and who they'd start with (Gomez, Matip, Virgil, Fabinho, Hendo, Thiago etc have all been mooted) . Everyone wants to talk about the need to sign better players, but hand in hand with that is a discussion about which players need replacing.

Dead rubber game or not, you have to have some professional pride. You're suggesting Gomez didn't need to play well because the game had no significance? What about the fans who travelled to the South Coast and had to watch Kelleher, Matip and Gomez play that badly? That's what is truly embarrassing. Abuse, i'll back you on. Nothing worse than an overly extreme one liner. But constructive debate? That is fair game as far as I'm concerned.

When they step on the pitch, if i'm in the stadium I'll give them my full support. But what we as fans talk about on forums is frankly none of the players business. We pay our money for the right to have that opinion. £1200 a year it costs me to have all the channels and buy the newest shirt. So if i want to have my say, I've bought that virtue by lining the players pockets. YNWA is important when it comes to personal and health issues, but there is ultimately no room for sentiment in elite level sport. We can't just keep hold of players not good enough and roll out the clubs mantra as reasoning. Nobody here is stalking or abusing Gomez, Matip, Virgil etc in person or on their social media accounts. We're just talking about whether they're the right players to go forward with. And that's okay.

I see nothing in constructive debate in that post however, a lot of it is aimed at questioning commitment - how is that constructive? There’s nothing being stated about what could be done to be improved?!

Gomez has not had a great few seasons, stemming from injuries and loss of form, which was compounded by our general form being middle of the road. Whether he stays or not, hopefully he plays himself back into where he knows he needs to be, there’s no need to question that he’s not wanting to throw himself into tackles as that is what he has done and it has caught him out?!

There’s also no need to bring salary into it either, what kind of metric is that useful in supposed constructive debate? I see a lot of fair reaches but this is becoming a bit tedious.

Hopefully the conversion will actually move into a constructive place rather than tedious remarks and throw away comments/ low brow analysis.

If you have a midfielder tracking back and within a metre or so, then you can stop backing off since the midfielder will catch the attacker if you don't.

Our lack of pace and energy in midfield instilled this ever backing off in our defense for large parts of last season. Can see that turn around next season, with Szob&Mac, allowing Konate, VVD or whomever plays to stand up to opposition a bit better.

MKS, nobody is saying you cannot question a player's performances nor attitude on a football forum or whatever so stop saying what literally did not happen. Also, You don't need to label a player as the "worst player ever" for someone to have the opinion that you are going a bit harsh, bashing or OTT on them. You call it constructive debate. I disagree and call it OTT behaviour. Nobody is silencing anybody here.

Therefore it is my opinion that I think you are overreacting over a player who has had issues with injuries that have clearly affected him mentally hence, me using the word "player bashing". Whether he can regain his form or not is one thing but the fact that you are writing literal essays about it, talking about stuff that have nothing to do with the actual topic is proof of your overreaction, IMO.

Unlike you, I do not base any value nor stock on a dead rubber game where players who haven't played in weeks or months hence, rustiness and lack of cohesion which can definitely affect their collective/ individual performances. You do, which is fair. I don't. Moral of the story? Differences in opinion on a footie forum. It is what it is.

I don't think i've been OTT personally or bashed anyone for the record. No more than other posters and Eds 'bash' players they don't rate. I've seen far worse things written about Karius, Matip, Jones, Keita etc. I've simply given situational examples why I don't think Gomez is good enough to play CB for Liverpool anymore. I wish the bloke all the best in his career and if i ever met him I'd thank him for some great memories. It is nothing personal, I simply think we need better to challenge City.

Alry, the constructive part is highlighting his weaknesses rather than just saying "Gomez is bad". Do you want me to spell it out for you what he needs to do to improve? It's fairly obvious. If i say he backs away from tackles then quite clearly the corrective actions is to engage attackers earlier. Can you not work that out yourself? ?

Salary and status is absolutely relevant. If you are at the top of any entertainment industry you are there to be judged on the quality of entertainment you provide and you're remunerated handsomely for putting yourself in that spotlight. Any paying football fan has a right to challenge the performances of a player they made rich, in my opinion.

No such thing as a “dead rubber” of a game. Even when there is nothing to be gained Especially when the manager has said every position will be looked at. What better time to show him your up for it than in the last game of season so it’s fresh in his head. (Jones seemed to take note) . He can be brilliant on the day as we know but he has been here about 8 years now and had 1 good season. We have been naive letting players leave for free we need to be ruthless now.

Just out of curiosity - are there any of our CBs that we should keep?

Matip and Gomez are clearly useless, VVD is nowhere near the player he was and if too busy shouting his mouth off and Konate is injury prone.

The only option we have is Phillips, and we all agree he should be allowed to leave and kick on with his career.

Perhaps we play a 1 - 0 - 7 - 3 formation this season?

Nice that as a group that stood behind Keita, we’ve all shuffled across to stand behind Gomez now. It just fills you with pride.

Last game of the season was still worth 3 points, and much better to play well .
not a big fan of Big Joe but he can play any position across the back four plus he is English .
so for me, I would keep him .

I prefer to be loyal to a young lad who has shown what he is capable of when at full fitness and given a run in the team. That he has had a couple injury hit years and battling with emergence of Konate and Matip going in and out of form, is not the time to be turning me back on one of our lads.

That’s fair enough Faithinworks. I can’t think of one fan who wouldn’t want Gomez back to the form of 19/ 20, that would only be good for the team but it has now been a fair while now and he has had a fair run of games (start of last season) and it didn’t really work.
Constructive criticism is ok you know? Better than calling players crap in my opinion or regurgitating what an ED has already said .
Anyway here’s hoping for a fit and healthy team for the 23/ 24 season where everyone is on form ?.
