Whenever I watch them (getting increasingly rare) England look like their aim is to avoid defeat rather than actually win. There is a reasonable amount of talent to pick from (Bellingham, Rice, Saka as examples and an expert goal hanger), but we never seem to want to take the game to the opposition.

I mean WDW3, even as an Irishman I can see England have a good team, well the makings of one anyway

Like many of you, I question why Philips is there - doesn't play a minute for City
Likewise Maguire? I mean really?
Pickford I'm not sure about but then he does seem to do alright for you in fairness

You do have an abundance of talent though in Kane, Rice, Bellingham, Saka, Foden, Trent etc but it is down to Southgate to actually pick all the best players and not his favourites - weirdly, I seem to remember him saying he would not do this at the start of his tenure

Awk as English fans you guys must be frustrated and believe you can see much better from your team and you probably could, just not with Southgate - can you imagine that England team if the likes of Klopp or Guardiola were in charge?

Tbh though I could well see this generation end up like the Golden one before it, I refer of course to the days whereby it was Cole, Terry, Ferdinand, Beckham, Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard, Shearer, Owen et al and they achieved nothing, purely down to inept management.

The players are good, it's just the manager has no clue what to do with them. Still playing his favourites even after stating he'll play those in form. Far too defensive when they have great attacking players. Although the record record in tournaments is far better than before, he gets found out tactically by any of the bigger nations.
It seems he is good for team spirit and morale (ie players don't feel scared any more) but not much more.

I would say this England squad is probably stronger than it has ever been. We have an embarrassing amount of talent in that squad and the fact we haven't won an international tournament is purely down to management and tactics.

I hope Scotland beat us. Stuie I'd say that comment is very subjective. Most of the players we have now wouldn't cope w the demands of football in years gone by. Falling down wasn't an option.

Football is always subjective, but in terms of talent compared to the teams you're playing, there is no reason this team should not have won a major trophy. Whilst previous England teams have had excellent players, I don't think we have ever had such a pool of talent to choose from all over the pitch.
