Rumour started on Reddit.

Hahah fat Dunc. I'm sure he stated the rumor about Liverpool selling us to the Arabs , the other day and to think some people pay £30 to be filled with absolute nonsense.

Reddit is like a forum with sub-forums and reddit.com/r/soccer decided to start a rumour about Balo to Stoke in order to see which media outlets or 'ITK' people picked it up. For example footyblog.net and some twitter guy picked it up.
