Lambert is a fantastic signing; shrewd bit of business. For all the criticism we came into last year about not having a 'plan B', well, we now have a 'plan B'.

Think about the Chelsea game at Anfield in particular. Despite their best efforts, Sturridge and Suarez just could not break through and as the game wore on, they were getting more and more frustrated and more and more desperate with their attempts. There was no real option to shake things up; with Lambert that option now exists.

I don't think anyone is under any illusions, least of all Rickie himself. He gets that he is a role player. That said, don't underestimate the importance of role players in the grand scheme of things.

For all of those who are bemoaning the signing of a low cost, over-30 player instead of a marquee name: take a pill. The window has not even officially opened yet. Who said Lambert was going to be our ONLY signing? Sit back and let's see how this all unfolds and judge our dealings in the window on a more meaningful sample size (closer to August) rather than making knee-jerk comments in June.

While I'm whining, can we also stop automatically writing off players just because they are no longer in their 20s? Again another common knee-jerk reaction. Let's judge players on their own merit regardless of age. Bottom line: they are either good or not good and what may make them good or not good could well be a function of their age but, let's not generalize. There are loads of players I wouldn't touch regardless of the fact that they are under 30 and in their prime. Let's stop treating the fact that a player is in his early 30s as a death sentence--for a player who has taken care of himself, has experience and who has ambition, the early 30s could very well be their prime years.

Final thought: I do feel sympathetic towards Southampton and their fans. Last couple of years, they had an exciting team full of promise. If all the alleged departures do in fact take place, it will leave their team decimated. Next season, it looks like Southampton will be a shadow of itself and will be fighting to avoid relegation. Their fans must be gutted.

It can't be a good feeling to see the 'bigger' teams raiding the minnows especially since all the hard work to nurture and develop these players was done by the minnows. It doesn't seem fair somehow. Yes, they make a profit on these players but, money doesn't guarantee a good player (see Spurs and try replacing all that Suarez brings even with $100 million).

With Southampton (assuming we also get Lallana), we benefit and as LFC fans it's exciting but, put the shoe on the other foot. We certainly feel aggrieved when teams like Barca, Real or Chelsea have the nerve to start sniffing around our top players.

It's reality and as long as the game is about the bottom line it is not going to change. I get it. Just a little sad it has to be that way is my point.
