VVD, Konate, Gomez, Matip, Phillips, Davies, Williams. Those are 7 CBs and I can't see all 7 being in the squad next season.

Ed001 I assume Williams will go out on loan but do you expect another departure at centre back?

{Ed001's Note - it is going to take time for both Gomez and VVD to get up to speed and they will no doubt have some niggles too early on, so probably keep them in the summer and assess it again in the winter window.}

One way or another I very much doubt Williams will be a Liverpool player at the end of the transfer window.

Williams needs a loan so long as we have 4 options fit at the back, Davies might also need a loan or we just keep him as a 5th option, not quite sure why he was never even been close to featuring but I hope his future becomes clearer for both the club and himself. I’d keep Phillips as 4th choice at the very least, he definitely played his way into contention for us, not as a starter but someone that will compete with Gomez for a potential starting berth if someone gets injured or out of favour. Matip needs to move on, I rate him highly when he’s fit and on form, easily our second best CB behind vvd, but the guy is made of glass and we can’t rely on him anymore. I can’t see why we would retain all our chronically injury prone players, I’d even say Gomez is on the edge for me, because I haven’t been convinced by him for a while espeically once vvd got injured, on top of being made of glass, but I understand the need to give him another season to prove himself. Vvd konate Gomez and Phillips should be our 4 options.

Hjikle why pick on Willams he was just as important as Phillips and did brilliantly at the end of season. Just because he is a youngster don't just chuck him to the side, its obvious Klopp sees a lot in him.

Because 1. He is not as good as Phillips so much less likely to pick up minutes and 2. He is at an age when a loan for game time pretty much anywhere will likely make him a better player and improve his value/ chance of playing for us.

Both of which make it unlikely for me that he will be turning out in red next year.

When VVD and Gomez get back to full fitness, is Matip going to accept being fourth choice? I doubt it. He's too good for it but his injury record is too unreliable to demand anything more at Liverpool.

Ed001 - Not strictly Liverpool-related but might have some relevance to VVD/ Gomez. Was Laporte’s relative lack of playing time last season due to ongoing recovery from his injury in the previous season, or because Pep simply preferred Stones and Dias? VVD and Gomez are recovering from very serious injuries, and to expect them to immediately be back at the levels they were seems a little hopeful. Thus it wouldn’t be surprising to see them in and out of the team more as they slowly regain the performance levels of previous.

{Ed001's Note - early on it was his recovery but Dias and Stones hit it off as a partnership, so, for once, Pep stuck with them. Normally he still rotates but he has learnt something in his time in England with regard to defending.}

With Ed01's initial comment about VVD and Gomez needing time to fully recover, won't be surprised to see a CB partnership of Matip and Konate esp. if Phillips is sold and Klopp not looking to move Matip. Probably for the reason I just mentioned.

Nat has proven himself rock solid and the start of the upcoming season I think he will be needed again.

VvD and Gomez won't be back yet or will be easing their way back and Konate may be eased in too. Matip who knows if he would be fit, if he is then he is likely to start but also wouldn't play more than once a week in case he might brake.
