Great article Tris, interesting to see the similarities and differences in their respective games.

Robben was one that I always wished we'd sign, over many, many seasons, until we signed Salah of course. I thought he was fantastic at Chelsea and thought our chance might have been to nab him when he was moving from Madrid to Bayern, but by then we were too deep in the financial mire created by waldorf and statler.

I actually think Robben at his peak was better than Hazard at his peak, albeit Salah caps them both. I can't see Hazard playing into his mid-30s like Robben has, but I could see Salah doing that given the time he spends on conditioning and training and the way he lives his life.

{Ed001's Note - I agree with you on that mate, I can see Salah playing a fair few years at the top level yet.}

Robben was brilliant. It was amazing to see defenders over a whole decade not being able to cope the with the Robben ‘cut inside and curl into the corner’ he mastered and would execute about 10 times a season.

Salah takes good care of himself. Is never really injured. I could see him playing at a high level well in to his mid-late 30s.

There's one factor between the two of them that this doesn't really touch on which is reliability. The last time in his career that robben played 30 league games was 2003 for PSV (he only managed over 25 twice) . As close as they were at the peak of their quality, if actually picking a player for a team across the ages you'd always pick salah because you can trust him to be there when you need him.

Hijkle as they say, Availability is the best ability. Doesn't matter how great you are. If you cannot get on the pitch and stay there over a long period of time, it ain't going to matter.

As for the comparison, Salah for me all day even tho, Robben was absolutely brilliant for a decade.

Great article, mate, and thanks for writing it. I am surprised you got to it so soon. Given the number of requests you get, I fully expected that by the time you would get to this Salah would have long since retired and nobody would remember who Robben was.

{Ed001's Note - you did ask for it about 3 years before Salah signed for us, so it did take a while!}

Nobody could have even dreamed in their wildest, that Mo Salah has turned out to be the way he has, when he first joined. Even I thought that he was just a capable winger and that's it. It's a pity he doesn't get the recognition and adulation given to others like Aguero or the British Pele (aka Harry Kane) .

{Ed0666's Note - I have to be transparent and say I was so underwhelmed we paid so much for a fourth choice player. Talk about humble pie and all that he’s been a friggin revelation.

You know that's how things are sometimes, Ed0666. You just show up at the right place and at the right time and things just click and keep clicking. 😎.

{Ed0666's Note - said Eds 001 about none of his relationships ever.
