We have just agreed a deal for Lavia worth £60m, why oh why didn't we pay the £50m for day one and wouldn't have had all this dragging on.

Would that have stopped Chelsea coming in for him, though?
Look at what Chelsea are paying for Caceido after we bid for him.

{Ed002's Note - No, I have explained all the way through this that Chelsea need two DM players and they have been interested in Lavia long before Liverpool go involved.}

Lack of clear headed thinking at the very top. After 3 offers and 3 sets of negotiations, you would think that the club would get an idea as to how firm Southampton was in their stance? But they didn't and instead chose to mess around for 2 million on a 50 million deal. Petty stuff, it looks like. Now we have to pay much more. Not to mention the bad PR.

Coz we have no actual idea about he's transfer fee except rumours abt 50M ?.

ed2 - had we just offered what Southampton wanted last week, do you think we would have secured Lavia?

{Ed002's Note - Perhaps but when it became clear that was no happening is when they called Joe Shields and Manchester City.}

I thought not, Ed002.
If Chelsea offer more than us then Southampton have a right to sell to them. We might think Lavia is worth £40 odd million but have to pay more because of other interest and a lack of viable alternatives.

Who didn't have an idea of his transfer fee? Our club?

This is a transfer transaction between a buying club and a selling club. In private. So the selling club will always cite what they want before the buying club will make an offer. It's not an auction where there's no asking or ceiling price, and quite simply the highest bidder gets the player.

thanks ed2 - I'm going to assume that we have some positive response from Lavia's camp to have persisted with multiple bids to Soton. Had Southampton accepted Chelsea's bid last week? Also had we already agreed personal terms with Lavia?

{Ed002's Note - Yes, Southampton have accepted a bid from Chelsea.}

ed2 - how does it work with multiple bids? can Southampton accept bids from two clubs and then leave them two clubs to make the deal with the player?

{Ed002's Note - Sure but the club would typically give a preference to the higher bid (e.g. think of an auction).

well, personally I hope we sign Lavia. So I'll be hoping that we have our bid accepted and can agree terms with his reps.

Ed02, any reason Chelsea didn’t go ahead with a medical etc once their bid was accepted a couple of days ago?

Thanks for all your responses this morning, it’s much appreciated.

{Ed002's Note - There is no huge rush in any of this.}
