Ed's can you shed any light on the possible thinking behind getting Gakpo and not picking up amrabat or someone of that nature for a similar price? Just doesn't make sense, I understand klopp wants certain players but seems odd leaving that midfield to add to an overstocked forward line.

{Ed002's Note - it makes little sense to me even though Jota and Diaz are out for a while. Gakpo is a very good player but the priority should have been elsewhere.}

Because he was a target and he became available at the right price and the club saw value in it. They didn’t sign him for just the next few months it’s a long term signing, Salah and Bobby won’t last forever.
We didn’t sign Amrabat instead because we have our eye on better players to fill the midfield positions. They just haven’t become available yet.
Quite simple to understand I would’ve thought.

Absolutely spot on Beckers although what’s quite simple for some people seems to be troublesome for others.

The right player at the right price seems to be baffling to some.

Plus our top scout VVVV vetoed the signing.

Don't you guys think Diaz will be leaving after all that flirting with Barcelona earlier in the summer and Laporte was speaking about him too he could possibly be on the move as we was not his first choice it was Barcelona who at that time were a mess financially and didn't have the money?

5.) 26 Jan 2023
26 Jan 2023 07:33:35
I seriously doubt Barcelona can afford him.

Out of interest, can anyone name another club, successful or unsuccessful, that continually waits multiple transfer windows for the “right” player to fill problem positions? I’m genuinely interested to know.

There are absolutely none FPF - all other clubs just pull players’ names out of a hat, with the exception of Chelsea who just buy everybody mentioned on social media. Hope this helps.

26 Jan 2023 09:07:43
That’s my point, I mean is it wise to overlook the squad issues we have right now to pick a player we don’t really currently. I know it worked waiting on vvd but losing out on champions league football will certainly lessen our appeal.

26 Jan 2023 09:03:20
In regards to Gapko, did I hear somewhere the reason we went for him in January is because the Manks were sniffing around him, a similar situation to Diaz last January? Buy him now or risk him going elsewhere!

{Ed002's Note - Someone is teasing you. That is not the reason for buying him.}

Suppose Diaz shudna signed that big multi year contract with us if he fancied playing for Barcelona now should he! if they want to give us coutinho money for him id pack his bags meself but seeing as they're broke n all not likely.

The big issue is the midfield has clearly been an area that needed reinforcement for some time. We know the club want Bellingham but with all the will in the world i just don’t see that deal ever coming off. The club can’t allow themselves to lose sight of the bigger picture.

That being said, if they knew mane wanted to leave last January and Diaz was a summer target then when spurs became involved they did the right thing. Maybe the club know one of the attack wants to leave and have done the same thing again, that’s possible.

FPF there are plenty of examples of teams filling problem positions with chaff but there are not many examples of teams filling problem positions with chaff and then winning the league and the Champions League.
If that’s where are aspirations lie then we have no choice but to wait for the right players to get us there.

Gakpo is versatile. Probably one of most essential traits of players bought while Klopp has been in charge.

14.) 26 Jan 2023
26 Jan 2023 10:38:52
I mean.
We had Salah as our only fit forward. That might be part of it.

Imagine if we bought Amrabat, went into a game with one fit striker, United signed Gakpo for the price we got him for…. imagine the fume from the twitter fans?

This reminds me of the joke in which a woman buys her husband a blue shirt and a white shirt for his birthday, he wears the white shirt, his wife asks “what wrong with the blue one”.

If Diaz leaves (I still think Firmino and Jota will be the ones sold), then he will be sold for way more than we paid. Oddly enough, that's how business works. Gakpo is a replacement for one of those 3. These things are all planned way ahead. Do any of you think it's all done on the fly?

16.) 26 Jan 2023
26 Jan 2023 11:14:38
As much as it pains me to say it, I think Firmino will be the one to leave. I really like him as a player but his better days are clearly behind him. Add his contract running out onto the mix and it really looks likely that he will most likely be the one making way.

17.) 26 Jan 2023
26 Jan 2023 11:31:08
I think it’s gone according to plan. Konate was desperately needed. Diaz nunez and gakpo was needed imo, (the front 3 have carried us well but a refresh was due with age and mane leaving. ) midfield will be done this summer I believe . Hopefully enough change to get another cb.

18.) 26 Jan 2023
26 Jan 2023 11:37:02
Still think we could do with another left footed forward, just for balance. It's not urgent but would help.

Skriniar in for free and Matip sold for me is a no brainier.

20.) 26 Jan 2023
26 Jan 2023 12:17:24
Amazing how some of us contort ourselves to justify the club's squad mismanagement.

21.) 26 Jan 2023
26 Jan 2023 12:24:34
When we first bought Gakpo I thought it was to be a replacement for Firmino when he leaves at the end of the season. Not a like for like replacement but another attacker. Now that might still happen but recent statements by both Klopp and Firmino seem to suggest they both want him to stay.

This “right” player narrative is now laughable.
You cannot tell me there hasn’t been a midfielder available and more suitable than ox/ Kieta these last 6 windows. You win the CL/ title if your not in the competition or sitting 10th in the league.

22.) 26 Jan 2023
26 Jan 2023 12:32:42
I'm sorry Thom another forward? we have Salah, Nunez, Diaz, Jota, Gakpo, Firmino, Carvalho

not even including Doak or Elliot who can play on the wing if needed or Gordon to come back.

23.) 26 Jan 2023
26 Jan 2023 12:40:17
The reason we haven’t signed a midfielder is because bellingham is signing in the summer. Done deal. That’s the only logical reason I can think of that we haven’t signed a midfielder.

24.) 26 Jan 2023
26 Jan 2023 13:09:43
Not without somebody leaving I might add. Saying that, I'm not against a return to the old days of right footed wingers playing on the right, getting to the byline and whipping crosses in towards some big 6 foot 5 lump with rigor mortis.

25.) 26 Jan 2023
26 Jan 2023 13:23:44
Kloppers - another midfielder?

We have Henderson, Thiago, Keita, Milner, Fabinho, Jones, Elliot, Carvalho, Ox, Bajetic, Clark. Not to mention Melo, Mortan and Clarkson.

Numbers of midfielders is not the issue.

26.) 26 Jan 2023
26 Jan 2023 13:35:04
Sorry Kloppers, misread your comment as a reason we shouldn't have bought Gakpo is because we needed more midfielders.

27.) 26 Jan 2023
26 Jan 2023 13:39:40
Numbers of midfielders is fundamentally the issue.
Age is a number. We have too many old and too many young players, not enough in the mid range.
Amount of games out injured is a number and we have a lot of players who spent an awful lot of time injured.

The midfield needs to workers in the mid 20’s.

Bellingham is a once in a lifetime player but it cannot just be him we sign, if we can sign him at all. That’s too much on a very young man’s shoulders.

The Bellingham money would be arguably better spent on two number 8’s or and 8 and a 6. Camavinga and Valverde if the would cost £130m remember, Real will have to sell some players.
