Just an alternate view - all this negativity! IF, and still a big IF, we sign Wijnaldum we're getting a player who scored 11 and assisted 5 in a relegated side, not too shabby and definitely an improvement.

Can't see where that would be a 'strange choice. ' Combine him with Mane and there's a lot of goals and assists added - surely a good thing? The defender is £4million, that's about £500k in today's market v 10/20 years ago so not a big deal and players will leave to more than cover both these costs.

Gotze looked awful at the Euros yet everyone is desperate for a big name like that (Balotelli anyone) . Klopp et al know what they're doing much more than we or (sorry) the Eds do - Mane and Wijnaldum in. Benteke and Ibe out? Surely a HUGE improvement, even if just based on stats? No? Just saying.

I agree. although at the min I don't see Wijnaldum as someone we should urgently sign. Give him a chance, he may turn out to be quality. He has the talent and if he puts in the effort could be a steal. Yeah he looked grumpy and didn't really perform great last year but still had a decent return and people are allowed to have bad times. Hazard was terrible last season (til he played us) . And again I see no trouble in having 5 cbs especially since a few seem to constantly get niggles. Could have kept kolo. Yeah but this guy is more than likely a big improvement and our defence needed an overhaul.

I don't think anyone thinks he's a bad player, but he just isn't needed we have too many attacking options as it is? We can't but a 20 million pound player on the bench?

Examine that further he only scored in 7 games and 4 of those were against Norwich and 2 were in the game against Spurs when they were already relegated, so disregarding those, his total looks pretty poor. He is a shockingly bad player who we should be avoiding at all costs that Newcastle want rid and no one else wants him should raise alarm bells.

Mr. Dennis - I think you'll find both halves of your final sentence plain wrong. Newcastle neither want to sell nor need to and I think you'll also find that Spurs have been monitoring Wijnaldum situation and Potchetino (spelling) has proven himself a good judge of player so that's good enough for me.

{Ed001's Note - Newcastle are very keen to offload him and he is extremely keen to leave. Rafa does not want Wijnaldum.}

Raga didn't want Alonso? Raga doesn't want Wijnaldum?

Therefore: Wijnaldum>Alonso!

I wouldn't even want him even if he was for free - he is not good enough. Spurs look like they will sign N'koudou for 10mil - a younger, better player with a lot more potential and for half the price. Us paying £20mil smacks of stupidity it really does - if it happens be prepared to put it into the Benteke/ Balotelli/ Carroll bin of daft, expensive transfer.

Dennis just showed the exact reason why stats mean nothing and should Never be used to make an argument for a poor player. The fact is that he is a poor, lazy player who will add nothing to our team and isn`t better than those we already have here. Also, has the OP ever wobndered why such a good player was benched by his coach for not working hard enough during a relegation scrap? That`s something the stats don`t tell you now, do they? I personally don`t believe this rumor has legs as Ed has said that Newcastle desperately wants rid just like they want rid of Sissoko hence, agents may be trying to drum up interest even tho, there isn`t any.

So because spurs are monitoring him that should mean he's a good player and is suited for us? Do Spurs have the same squad as us- no. So our needs are very different and unless we get rid of a few midfielders he'll be warming the bench.

Cincyred he also never tracks back, his passing is poor, he's one paced, has no real skill, can't tackle and his shooting is poor. Add to that the fact he's weak physically and mentally and you have a lot of reasons to avoid him.

no, he's quick enough and had over 80% pass success last season. Rafa rates him highly too, good enough for me.
