Leaving all the linguistics aside. if Firmino has crossed the line and used a racial slur then I hope he gets whatever punishment that deserves. absolutely no place in the game and life for it, and I truly hope it isn't true. again let the facts come out and hope for the best.

The facts are out though. A quick google search for the video shows that Firmino swore at Colgate in portuguese. Either Colgate misheard and we give him the benefit of the doubt, or he tried to lie in order to deflect the blame so the ref didn't book him.

He called him son of a bitch in Portuguese. Stop all the racist rumours.

You are just making this stuff up. It’s fairly clear there was no racism.

How can it be racial if both of them are players of colour? All I know is that I saw "Puta" in there somewhere. I'm no expert, but from watching Latino gangster movies (Blood in Blood Out; Scarface, etc) and listening to Latino rap music back in the day (Big Pun, Fat Joe, Tony Touch, etc), it was definitely an insult. In Spanish, puto is the male form and puta is the female form (I always assumed it meant b*tch or ho {aka whore} or coward within the context of the dialog of the movie or what was being rapped about in the music) . I know he speaks Portuguese, but it probably has a similar meaning there too.

It was a heated moment and things were said at the height of emotion. Holgate deserved to be clocked right in the face, which obviously couldn't happen (Firmino looked like he wanted to though😁) . But yep, not much in it. Insults are thrown around on the field all the time in moments like this. Nothing new. So try not to read into too much into it.

Eako, racism isn't just between whites and non whites. I have no idea what was said and I hope it's just a storm in a tea cup but there's no reason Firmino couldn't have been racist.

Everton fan here. Just popped over to see Liverpool fans view on the incident.
Firstly I have no idea for certain what was said (no one here does so the 'facts' aren't out) . (Disregarding the push which was dangerous and yes I understand why Firmino wanted to knock him out)

What seems certain to me from his reaction and videos I've seen is that Holgate thought something racist was said (I'd like to think he misheard) .

But the original post said that IF something racist was said then Firmino should be punished. And you guys are disagreeing with that?

Furthermore criticising Holgate reaction trivialises racism in a huge way and very disappointing to see.

Don't defer away from the holgate assault. holgate should be hit with a ban. everyone seems to of forgotten about launching a fellow professional into the stand.

{Ed025's Note - launching him now is it ben, im awaiting your attempted murder charge next mate..talk about overreaction...jeeze..

I'm Black, and I certainly would want anyone to be sanctioned if they used racist language. In the same way, if a person used the race card to get out of a bad situation, they should receive the same sanction as the person they blamed.

I feel something racist was said then personally I feel the referee would have taken action against Firmino there and then so for me it’ll just be a few swear words in what was a heated situation. Holgate should’ve got a yellow card and that’s it.

Disregarding the push.
No, you can't disregard the push then try and hang Firmino out to dry, Holgate is a professional footballer who pushed a fellow pro into the stands at speed. That could have caused a serious injury. You don't get to 'disregard that' because you think Firmino has said something in response to the push.
I'm not for one moment condoning Firmino if he's used racist language, whatever language Firmino used was probably out of order, but it was in response to dangerous foul play by your man.

{Ed025's Note - silly by holgate and a yellow card appropriate JT, dont try and make more out of it than what it was though mate..your not judge benny..

Thank you toffee, one of a few speaking sense. Howw bout we just let the investigation and facts come out. All y'll embarrassing yourselves by minimizing what potentially could be a very serious incident. I hope for the best obviously but it speaks volumes that so many here are quick to dismiss the case before the facts have even been heard. No one wants to taint firmino here, but equally we shouldn't dismiss it out of hand. saybing things like 'race card' is pure deflection and doesn't give due respect to the issue.

Also all ya'll professional lip readers failed to recognize that holgaate doesn't react to when firmino says puta. Firmino says something else out of view of the camera that holgate reacts to. unless he has slow reactions like he did to stop vvd fpr the goal. but anyways let's hope its nothing too serious.

JTRed91 - we can disregard the push because that's not what this thread is about. This thread is about the words exchanged between Holgate and Firmino.

If you want to talk about the push then start a thread about the push (which I think was inexcusable and if he'd been sent off I don't think he could've complained too much)

Toffee You said yourself you don’t know what was said just like the scaremongering original poster so why start a thread on it? What we do know is some thug decided assault would be his game and was shocked when someone threw some insults back . Booo hooo. What a coward he is.
