Hi Eds
My birthday today and 40th year since my debut on the Kop as 7 year old v Everton in 1975. David Fairclough scored the winner in injury time but we left early as dad was worried I'd be caught in a crush.
Anyway 47 years on and I'm sad to say we seem a million miles from those halcyion days I recall as a little boy.
My son was born 3 months after Istanbul but has only DVD's and replays to remind him of what LFC is all about. I hope he gets more than an FA or League Cup to show him what we experienced whem we were 9 years old.
Football has changed so much since.
All the best Eds and fellow reds.
Don't think English football is anything like it was then, champions league finalists every year.

I served in the Cheshire Regiment and one of my lasting memories of Liverpool FC is actually in Belize in Central America where we were listening to the results coming over World Service and a lad who was a United fan on hearing the Liverpool score shook his head and muttered scousers have won the league again.

Now we don't even win it - let alone 'again'

Last season runners up with the best record against our top 4 rivals. this year the worst record v the sides above us due to a failure to fix a poor defence and to replace a world class striker. Lovern was meant to be the solution and it failed hence Can and a back 3. Sturridge injured hilghlighted the failure to brink in a top striker and we are still getting players sent off at crucial times, after Henderson's suspension v Chelsea last season cost us the title (I believe if he'd been available for that game we'd have won)
All the above point to a manager who cannot spot a player (don't give me the transfer committee excuses), can't get tactics and defence right (Moreno starts after the Utd game. really?Henderson at RWB to give Markovic a start and weaken the centre of midfield?). The substitutions v Utd and today at half time tell you he recognises his mikstakes however it's too late by half time and he shouldn't be making them to start with. English clubs performance in Champions league tell us it's a poor premier league and none of the top 4 sides are special therefore there is no excuse having spent as much as anyone in the last 3 seasons. He'll have plenty of time in the summer to top up the sunbed tan and polish his teeth. Guess what all the Emporer is in his altogether!

Agree, about the club or someone within being able to 'spot a player'. Over the years the likes of Hamann, Henchoz, Hyypia, Alonso, Mascherano, Torres, Suarez etc. have been 'spotted'. Just recently we've failed to do this, in terms of finding players, experienced or not who make an instant impact. In my opinion anyway.

With regard to Academies, which are the 'hot' topic this weekend. The club need to look more at giving young players a chance, simply because every 'worldie' as they're called, started in an academy and were given a chance. Some will do well others not, I remember Ferguson sicking with Beckham after he had several bad performances after being given a chance in the 1st team.

My point being, there are many problems at the club, depending who you ask. For me, we're not buying the correct players and not balancing that starting 11 with raw talent from the academy. Obviously there are players from the current squad who we wouldn't want to move on, but they could be counted on one hand (nearly).

Last season was a false dawn. We should have remained humbled and determined at the same time instead of thinking we have arrived. Today`s game simply showed that the team`s confidence is shattered and we should just focus on finishing the seson strong and winning a trophy and regroup in the summer with a new structure and new ideas with or w/o a new manager. YNWA!

Agreed red.
I did not see the game so can't comment on that but for me it seems the team spirit and togetherness shown last year has gone somewhere.

Poor showing. I saw Swansea reserves demolish Tranmere 2-6 on Sat. We were playing a team only 9 places above Tranmere with our 1st team?

We cannot head the ball at the back and our wing backs were just terrible tonight. Lambert awful and has no movement off the ball.

We performed poorest of all the teams playing underdogs this round. does not bode well for Sunderland away.

1.) What? Including the Qpr game? Laughable!

Whatever his personality off the field his performance on the field, along with only a handful of other great players over the years, rightly earns Steven Gerrard a place amongst Liverpool's top 10 players of all time.
It's easy to forget the incredible performances he has delivered over the years because of our recent malaise.
He was so close to ending on a high last season and I don't think any of us could begrudge him if he did a Lampard at some point over the next 2 seasons and won the premier league with Chelsea or Man City. I've no doubt if he was coming off the bench for Man City right now he'd be doing what Lampard is doing. He hasn't been given that freedom or been managed properly, although I'm pretty sure he's headstrong and made it tough for the manager to use him to the optimum.
Anyway good luck to him and hopefully this will give the hendo's & Lallana's the opportunity to express themselves and grow into their careers at LFC and a new era will be born.
Thanks Stevie and Carra you'll always be legends.
YNWA

{Ed001's Note - I don't think anyone would argue over top 10, or at least I would be surprised if they did anyway!}

Why can't fans not just appreciate that we've had 17 years enjoyment of a top footballer ?
I can't think of anyone that, over that time frame, played for the club and was good enough to cover (not just cover but be first choice, in fact England quality) 4 or 5 positions !
That includes Kenny, Souness, Hansen, St John. Liddell I never saw and can't judge. Tommy Smith and Ian Callaghan had similar longevity to Stevie, but covered two or three positions.
There has never been a better all-round footballer for such a length of time at Liverpool than Gerrard.
That can't be disputed surely ?
Does that make him the best ?
It must do.

2.) Cheers Ed
I had meant to say in my post what Aldridge suggested that he played with some poor squads over the years and a few good players alongside him.
I'm not his biggest fan as a person but I do respect hi s ability and contribution to LFC. We are all overdue a change, Gerrard included. Happy New Year all.
