I noticed a formation Bayern Munich are playing and was wondering if it was something we should try. It's basically a 3-1-4-2. 3 CBs with Kimmich sat in front, with the two full backs (one of them being Cancelo) pushed really high as wing-backs/ wide midfielders and Musiala and Sane playing as number 8s and two strikers up front. Only one of their starting XI was actually a central midfielder by trade.

Thought it was just ridiculous at first but this is also something Tuchel used to do with Dortmund, he had Kagawa and Dembele in the 8 positions with Reus and Aubameyang up front.

Basically, I was wondering if that would be worth trying with our unbalanced sqaud, maybe Jota and Diaz who both have actual legs playing in the 8 positions and two of Nunez/ Gakpo/ Salah/ Bobby up top. (in years gone by I'd have suggested Bobby would be perfect for the midfield role but I don't think he has the energy anymore) .

Alternatively though, have I just wasted everyone's time reading this and Tuchel and Nagelsmann are actually just finding ways to give all of their forwards minutes on the pitch knowing most of the teams they come up against in the Bundesliga are rubbish?

I'm sure Diaz would be excellent in the 8 role in crutches. In all seriousness though klopps stubbornness and player loyalty is his downfall something has to change.

Biggest problem with that is that we only have one center back who hasn't made a lot of mistakes this season. I'm not sure I want to play more than 2 of them, and in a system they're not used to.

I guess you could use Robbo as the left sided CB in a three, where he's played for Scotland, with van Dijk (when fit) in the middle and the Konate (again, when fit, but Gomez would be ok in the meantime) on the right, but cover would be thin, and I'd much rather have Robbo as the left wing back rather than Tsimikas.

Also the only time we came close to playing 3 CBs under Klopp that I can think of was against Brighton in the PL a couple of weeks back cos we had no right winger or right sided center mid, so TAA was constantly pulled upfield and the others shuttled across, effectively forming a 3 a times. That, as we know, worked extraordinarily well.

It's not going to matter if the players don't go about the basics right in any case.

We hardly ever change formation mate. It’ll be 433.

I don't put much credence into a starting formation, because it's never constant throughout a game. Hardly ever. We start with a formation, then it changes to when we are in possession, then changes again when "they" have possession, then changes again on which side of the field the ball is in and then again depending on whether certain players have the ball or not (certain players get double-teamed and that automatically shifts your formation, right? )

The Bayern formation is a good idea. Unfortunately no matter what formation the team play, we will get soundly beat, especially with the attitude and work rate being put in at the moment. I’m sure some cash rich incredibly stupid team would spend decent money on Trent. Sell now and buy a proper defender. He’s a shocker. Complete shocker. Gomez is not even championship level. But if I can see this, why can’t the club? They have been doing things on the cheap and now it’s just caught up with us.

Get rid of Trent because "he's a shocker".
Had to laugh at that one.
And Gomez "isn't championship level".
Sure the last part of that username shouldn't be "Python"?
Because that's the territory that post lies in. Comedy land.

You've got to remember that Bayern are playing in a league where 80%+ of the teams are dross, they can afford to play with such abandon. Pretty much every team now in the PL are good enough to beat anyone on any given day, it would be exposed far more often.

We don't have the defenders for it at the moment, but if you're going 3 at the back, you still need some defensive nouse in midfield.

Trent's "a shocker"? Why are some "fans" so hopelessly fickle? Did you think the same when he was winning the CL? League Cup? Premier league? FA Cup? And the lad is still only 24. let's have a bit more respect hey?

OP, don’t you need to have players who are actually willing to fight and compete on the pitch invorder to install any type of formation or tactic? Just asking for a friend.
