If our Greek scouser was to leave as is being touted, do you think it would be worth taking a look at Marcos Javier Acuna as someone who could come in and push robo for a starting place. every time I've watched him he looks decent.

If we're persisting with this Trent hybrid role then we need to look at a left sided centre-back rather than a left back. Robbo as a starter in this formation doesn't work either.

Basically having a back three consisting of two centre backs, no right back and an attacking left back is ridiculous and lacks balance. Whoever is playing on the left of the back three needs to stay at home or we're leaving VVD and Konate on their own at the back and getting torn apart every time we play a team with high-level forwards.

Maybe pre season is the time to try out young Calum chambers in the left of a back three, or even van den berg coming back to play the right side of the 3 and Konate and vvd shifting over?

Fully agreed on all your points Thomas. The answer is obvious, at least me anyway. Play 3 Cb’s at the back with wingbacks including a new RWB while Trent goes into midfield full time, or play 4 at the back as we have been, but again with a new RB. Either way Trent is a midfielder for me all day everyday now. I thought this a few years back and was convinced otherwise for a short while by Ed01 he was better at RB. After this season though, I just can’t see him doing anything other than taking Hendo’s place in midfield. As good as he has been at RB in previous years, his absurd level of creativity is just too much to be limited to that role. He should be running games from the centre of the park and I see no reason why he can’t.

@westwood I might have misunderstood your reply but I don’t think Thomas is suggesting we play “wingbacks” with a back 3. That would effectively mean we are playing 3 or 5 at the back.

I think he’s saying the current system we play with Trent pushing inside and forward (as he has been) .

But with a more natural defensive player on the left instead of Robbo as they are tucking in to make a back 3 when we have the ball.

Therefore someone like Ndicka or another could be good as they can function in both roles in our current system.

Yeah I get that, I’m just think of a way to keep Robertson in the team as well whilst moving Trent into midfield. I agree that the hybrid Trent RB midfield system leaves us too open with Robertson bombing forward so would play either a 433 with Trent in MF or a 523 / 343 with wingbacks and again with Trent in midfield. Both options keep Robertson in the team, have actual 3 CB’s in place at all times and put Trent where I think he will perform best. Football manager talk obviously, but Iv always been a fan of an offensive 3 at the back system.

Yeah Ndicka would be a good option, I’d love Levi Colwill but I can’t see that being feasible. Diaz is very much a natural winger and most of our centre forwards drift out to the left anyway so we’ll still be fine for width in attack without a defender bombing on.

Maybe we can consider an in-house solution. Luke Chambers, despite being an LB, was deployed on the left side of a back three during his last game and seemingly played quite well there, helping his team keep a clean sheet. Granted, he was playing for Kilmarnock in the SPL so the opposition isn't great. But I think he can be looked at in that position during pre-season at least.

On another note, does anyone or the Eds know what happened to Carragold23? He used to post quite regularly but I've not heard from him in years. I do miss the loan watch he used to do weekly actually.

Need to promote some of the youth, Chambers is a perfect example.
