If McTominay is worth £40m as is being reported, then Lavia, and many others, are all worth £50m+?
Just a thought?

Not sure what makes you think that. He’s had 1 season in the league in a side that got relegated. He may turn out to be decent, or he may be a complete flop. McTomminay has 4-5 years of top flight football under his belt. Yes he’s not been a regular starter recently but even so he’s far more experienced and established at this level.

Lavia could go either way and nobody really knows if he will become a good player. 50 million is a huge risk on a 19 year old kid. The markets gone crazy when you’ve got Southampton demanding 50m for Lavia and Brighton demanding 100M for Caicedo who again has had 1 decent season in the league.

Liverpool are stuck in the past though it seems. They are sticking to their guns, which in a way is admirable as not giving into these clubs who are taking advantage of prices going crazy is a good thing. But at the same time they will be left behind as every other club just seems to be accepting the market for what it is and buying overpriced players.

Personally I don’t think Lavia is worth anywhere near what is being quoted, and if players like Mctomminay are being quoted at £40M then I think Lavia should be going for around a similar price as one decent season in a relegated team doesn’t equate to a £50M price tag.

I think as fans we give ability too much weight when it comes to value.

Something is worth what someone is prepared to pay - the issue is the % Mancity get otherwise £40m would probably be enough - the very rich clubs want to push up the prices so only they can afford the top players keeping them at the top.

Man city get a percentage of the sale of lavia but not from the full price. The amount saints paid for him is minused before making the calculation. Not sure many people are realising this and are making the calculation on the full sale price.

I was surprised at the fee we paid for Salah. It helped teach me that I don't understand finances and transfers. I come on here and I'm reassured that I am not alone.
Thanks.

Do the rich clubs want to push the prices up? The prices are getting pretty prohibitive even for city and utd. Isn't the problem that with the TV money traditionally poorer clubs are under no pressure to sell, Brighton can say £100 mil for Caicedo, or we keep him. West Ham offered Rice a new contract and only sold him because his value was about to fall, otherwise they would have kept him.

Are we really comparing McTominay and Lavia values?

£40m is the baseline figure for almost any decent u25 player playing their trade in the PL in today's market.

Lavia is one of the most promising kids in the world in his position and has a season of PL football under his belt.

We are desperate. Other than Bajcetic, who is 18 and coming back from a bad injury, we have no defensive mids.

On top of that, Southampton are not in financial need and they have to pass a non-trivial margin from a sale onto City.

The market says Lavia's value is whatever Southampton want for him ie a deal worth up to £50m.

No way is Lavia worth 50m. can't even play a back pass.

I wouldn't say we are desperate just yet.

Fans might be desperate, but there's no sign of desperation from the club.

There was no desperation from the club last summer, too. That didn't exactly lead to success.

Now I know why Ed 2 doesn’t like talking about money.

Fly, the market isn’t what Southampton set a price at, the market is what someone is willing to pay. That said, ‘worth’ is a relative term we need a DM and we need one quickly and it may well prove to be the case that he is ‘worth’ 50m to us at this moment in time. Whatever the case will be I think it is universally accepted we need someone in so Liverpool are going to have to bite the bullet somewhere along the line as I think other clubs will push up the price as they realise what these players are now worth to Liverpool a week before the season and with fab and Hendo gone.

You’re only worth what someone is willing to pay for you. We ain’t willing to pay 50m for Lavia cos he ain’t worth that to us. Neither is Chelsea willing to pay 100m for Caicedo cos he ain’t worth that to them. That’s why negations exist.

As for us being desperate, that too is a relative term. Fans may be desperate but clearly the club isn’t and they will do what they think is best at their own time cos fans are looking at the first game. The club may be looking at the end of the window.
