Admittedly, I've never seen Lemar play.
But a 70m purchase has to start IMO.
For those that have seen him play, who does he replace in the starting 11?
Not that I'm against his purchase, just curious about who he replaces.

In my opinion, it's not about who he replaces it's about strengthening the squad. Injuries, fatigue and tactical changes mean Mane, Salah, Lemar, and Kent will all get their chances to play (Kent less so) in those wider attacking positions. Long gone are the days of the starting 11, it's a squad game.

He can play in a midfield 3 where Coutinho was intended to be used this season or on the left wing. Considering his price tag, he will start alongside Hendo/ Can and Gini in midfield but move to the wide positions if/ when Mane or Salah need a rest.

He doesn't have to start. He is a excellent option to start or be on the bench.

Our problem for years has been that if someone gets injured or tired, then we have no backup. Now, finally we are starting to have multiple quality players in most positions.

Sometimes he will play instead of Salah, sometimes instead of Mane. Sometimes he will play instead of Gini, sometimes instead of Can.

Sometimes he'll play instead of Henderson or Firmino.

Sometimes we'll play a slightly different system.

Sometimes he'll be on the bench.

We don't have to play all of our best players all the time.

Wouldn't say definitely. but it certainly gives us the option to drop one of the midfield 3 and play 3 in behind a more orthodox striker or even firmino.

So we would like up something like

Can hendo
Salah lemar mane
Firmino/ Sturridge

Could be a useful option to have against deep sitting sides at home.

Other than CB and GK positions I don't think our first team needs strengthening.

But we do need a stronger bench when the games are piling up in Nov / Dec.
