i can see the frustration after today's result. but may i make some points, it's not sterling fault for not signing a contract or his wages etc. nor lucas' absence or gerrard's mindlessness and such like. we weren't good enough today, from the off. united deserved to win today, perhaps by a bigger margin. there are big games left for both teams. fingers crossed we pick up.

needed to win and did, away as well. however, whilst i appreciate that sturridge has been out and was on the bench, he has been a little too selfish in the last two games. another concern is our final ball, it has been misplaced, too easily read, blocked or never attempted. really need to sort that out as we've got some tough games coming up.

We haven't created that much without him, and every striker is selfish. Maybe a little bit too, but better than passing when he should shoot. It's more self belief I feel.

Obviously when trying to sign players, Champions League is a draw as it's a chance to compete at the highest level in Europe. But financially, does it affect a contract offered to a new player? Just look at Falcao at United, he wasn't all that bothered about Champions League but Eds has said on the transfer page the chances of getting a certain player is low if there's no Champions League.

sean21071986

1.) Falcao is clearly motivated by money, why else would he have moved to Monaco in the first place

2.) Seems like most players are motivated by money, it has been said one of the reasons that SG wouldn't sign an extension was due to reduced terms.

{Ed007's Note - It ALWAYS comes down to money. The latest one is a player wanting to leave 'to play in the CL', total bollocks! They want to play for a team that pays CL level wages, if it was about playing in the CL they could sign for Celtic or Basel for £20k a week. If Celtic offered a player £150k a week he wouldn't care if we were in the Scottish Cup never mind the CL.}

3.) Money is important although at least at some point in their career for a lot of them it is also about winning trophies. I believe SG would be willing to play one year for us for much reduced wages if he thought we are very likely to win the PL. This was also in my view the reason behind RVP moving to United or Fabrigas leaving Arsenal.
Some - although less and less these days, also want to play as much as possible.

4.) 19 Feb 2015 10:53:49
Ofc all players are motivated by money, some more than others. I was told that Falcaos contract with monaco was pretty much agreed before the player knew about it himself. Not saying he was forced to sign, but some of the people around him made it very difficult to say no.

Going to be an interesting second half. Liverpool looking most likely to nick it. Few players on yellows hope it isn't decided by a sending off. The little brazilian isn't getting a lot of time on the ball, so he's learning a lesson tonight, how to play when constantly closed down.

sean21071986

1.) Bentaleb and Mason are the best at pressing the ball in the league to be fair to PipCo. He kept them both busy which gave Ibe and Moreno acres of space out wide so fair play to him.

not Captain Fantastic's best performance, but Emre Can is making a case for playing further forward.

sean21071986

1.) Agree Sean, I think Can is wasted playing at the back.

2.) The thing is, who do you play at the back if Can moves forward??

3.) Toure or Lovren surely?

Personally, I'd go back to the diamond formation. Lose a defender and create another role in midfield to push Can on. It means dropping Markovic for a proper right back but he looks like he's badly injured anyway.

4.) We have a 20 million centre back called Lovren? I noticed how vocal Sakho was tonight appears to be growing in stature from that perspective. Ok it's only Bolton but that to me is a good sign he appears to have that element to his game now

5.) Can was my man of the match again tonight, play him anywhere he will shine he is that good! Phil C was excellent, but boy what a poor first half from the rest of the team! why do we insist on passing the ball into the net? shoot FFS, and the ref was poor as well, ignoring sunday league tackles and that was a never a penalty for me, jeez we almost went out! I still don't understand BR's team choices, i think he got away with it again.

6.) Toure or Lovren are specialists at the CB position. Can is a makeshift option who will get found out vs better opposition. Play the specialists at their positions and quit fooling around.

7.) Higgins.
I noticed that as well.
It was nice to see someone firing some f**ks into their team mates.
He won the ball near the corner flag turned around and roared.
Go ed lad.

8.) I think we are all agreed that he will move forward but this idea that he can't play centre half is just wrong.
He CAN play there.
Been waiting weeks to do that!!!

sort of with you muscat red. years ago gerrard was injured, at a time we were expected to drop points due to his injury. if we didn't take maximum points we nearly did.

i can understand the need for a clear out. however, can the committee and the manager be trusted to do it? cut away the 'dead wood' and replace them with sufficiently? i think if that is the route the club wants to take then a new manager is a priority as soon the season is over and any changes implemented to the structure of the club . there is obviously the availability of a manager, money and the players required to consider. we also know that chopping and changing a squad to excess generally reduces consistency. a lot of 'unanswerables' i think. a big summer it will be, regardless of what happens. personally, short term i think we'll only see progress if rodgers stays and adds a few quality players, perhaps long term the opposite will be true. again, who knows.

Agree, about the club or someone within being able to 'spot a player'. Over the years the likes of Hamann, Henchoz, Hyypia, Alonso, Mascherano, Torres, Suarez etc. have been 'spotted'. Just recently we've failed to do this, in terms of finding players, experienced or not who make an instant impact. In my opinion anyway.

With regard to Academies, which are the 'hot' topic this weekend. The club need to look more at giving young players a chance, simply because every 'worldie' as they're called, started in an academy and were given a chance. Some will do well others not, I remember Ferguson sicking with Beckham after he had several bad performances after being given a chance in the 1st team.

My point being, there are many problems at the club, depending who you ask. For me, we're not buying the correct players and not balancing that starting 11 with raw talent from the academy. Obviously there are players from the current squad who we wouldn't want to move on, but they could be counted on one hand (nearly).

Don't know why Gerrard made those comments. Balotelli was most likely to score, Henderson. who knows he doesn't take many and Sturridge shouldn't be allowed near penalties. I suspect the players as well as the manager have already turned on Balotelli.
