I think within a year Gakpo will be playing as a midfielder, he looks perfect for it.

He wouldn’t have much options anyways. He doesn’t seems to have the pace nor skills to displace Diaz on the left. Makes me wonder why did we not sign a proper midfielder to play in midfield.

My heart tells me to trust Klopp.

But my trauma tells me: Ox contract renewal with a couple of 19 year olds from the Championship.

@SaD, the answer is because we need a squad and it is, as a rule of thumb, desirable to have two players of roughly equal capability to push each other for the starting spot. It’s also a good idea to have a replacement ready if the first choice is injured (like Diaz is now) . It’s also good to have new blood to stop the indiscriminate slagging off of Ox and the kids …l.

So Simple seems Gakpo isn't good enough to play upfront after less than two games with us and spaceman is suffering from midfield trauma? ?.

Gakpo is no slouch and a very skilful player. 2 games and written off, is that a record for this site?! Jesus.

To be fair Oraujo, that's twice as long as it took me to write Joe Cole off.

Arthur Melo took 13 minutes - that must surely be a record.

He won’t ever displace Diaz? That is some conviction for a player who is currently out with a serious knee injury.

Gakpo was a strange signing when we are so weak in midfield. You have to feel for Carvalho as well. The Diaz injury should've been his cue to get some game time but he found himself dropped for Ox (despite a good game and goal against Man City in the league cup) and then Gakpo was signed which has effectively made it impossible for him to progress here as a player now. I think he'll have to leave on loan this month now. Even Doak seems to have moved ahead of him.

Maybe Gakpo can cover the front three positions if one of them is injured, suspended or out of form, Simple.
Maybe one of them could cover him if he does displace one of them.
Saying that he won't ever displace Diaz is a bold statement. Diaz has a long, long way to go before being thought of as irreplaceable.

To be fair WDW I don’t think it even took Victor that long ?.

Carvalho was very effective for Fulham last year as a no 10 and even as a central midfielder. I won't claim to know more than coaching staff at any club, but for the life of me I cannot understand the obsession with shoe-horning young/ small players on the wing. Always thought Foden was far more impactful in the middle of the pitch as well

I'd like to see what Carvalho could do RCM. We've tried everything else, and the fact he's right footed should give us a bit more balance than playing Harvey Elliott there. Will be less likely to get in the way of Trent/ Salah.

Thom43, Carvalho is a number 10. that's where he should be playing.

Swigbert17, Gapko will be a midfielder in a year? Based on all the games he's never played there? The guy is a left winger.
