Thoughts on Gakpo last night?

Obviously very early days but looks like he has a great touch and linked up well in the tight areas. Good awareness of what’s going on around him and good movement. Never hid and was encouraging the younger players and demanding the ball etc. And obviously versatile.

Happy so far for me. Looking forward to seeing him stake a claim as a regular starter even with Diaz, Jota and Firmino back.

Add to that Ben Doak who appears an absolute natural on the right. Tenacious and looks like he’s not one to be pushed around, things look ok for the future up top.

Bacjetic was great aswell. Always gets a foot in and then plays it simple. Some learning to do obvs but that should be fun to watch. There’s your Gini replacement right there.

Carvalho did ok for me but I prefer Jones. Just feel safer with Curtis. Hope he gets properly match fit very soon.

I’ve always had time for Naby but he’s just not strong or quick enough for the PL. Would probably look great in a less physical league.

And Harvey was great too. Love that he loves the club. Lovely goal.

With the current malaise there’s loads the senior players should be looking at from last night’s performance from the kids. Don’t stand still cos there’s young bucks knocking the door down.

{Ed025's Note - sometimes you have to just tell the truth pompey, Gakpo has looked awful and i know its early days but he has looked like a fish out of water up to now, he may improve when he gets used to his new teammates and the playing style, but up to now he has looked turkish delight mate..

I will reserve judgement on Gakpo until he has settled in, got used to the pace of the English league, new team mates, new country, has an actually settled side playing with confidence, relaxes and just plays his game. I vividly remember watching Fabinho those first few months thinking this ain’t going to work but it did, although of late it looks like he has regressed beyond what anyone could have anticipated unfortunately.

I hope Gakpo has a stellar career at Anfield but last night he looked like a Sunday league player.

How you can watch his performance and use the phrase "good movement" is a complete mystery . Best wishes.

Gakpo should have held the ball up better. There were too many fancy flicks and it wasn't the night for that. He should have held the ball up for the team more. He's a big enough lad to do it.
I can forgive the woeful shooting. For now.

Keita is a completely press resistant player only when the opposition has the ball, at best he's ineffectual at worst he's a liability and his teammates know it . But that's opinions for ya, agree about Doak though .

I think klopp will sort him out . In 12 months everyone saying what a bargain. Him Diaz and nunez going to be frightening.

Thought he worked hard last night and his pressing was good. Tough for the lad coming into a struggling side. Next year is the season to judge him.

His hold up play, link up play and pressing was good. His shooting was wayward though. Give him time.

For me it says it all that when Bajcetic, Carvalho and Gakpo came off our press fell apart and Wolves took complete control.

It was a huge difference defensively having a younger midfield and attack to protect the defence.

I think it's way too early to judge Gakpo but I feel we lost an element of the press when Salah came on for him. I know other players were substituted or changed positions but at least Gakpo did what Klopp asked him to do.

{Ed025's Note - he must have asked him to run around like a headless chicken then.. ?

Lol Ed 002.

I will reserve judgement as must be difficult to be thrown into a struggling team from the outset.

Although, does feel like we are playing matip upfront.

Im sure Gakpo will come good.

Once he’s up to speed and we’re playing well he’s going to be great. Technique and touch look sublime.

Gakpo has all the credentials to become the biggest flop since kieta.
I've never seen him kick a ball before joining us.
From what I've seen so far I can't see him adding anything to the team. Obviously I want him to do great I just don't see it myself.

Yeah, Ed025. You would know a lot about awful forwards with the dross you have at your mob at Everton. You literally have 3 forwards who NOT score goals nor create anything in attack and they have played years in the PL unlike Gakpo who has only been here 3 weeks. At least, Gakpo has a history of scoring goals and is only 23. Can't say the same for the forwards you have at your mob.

Also, you do know that Solomon Rondon and Neal Maupay you know, experienced PL forwards who are experienced at doing NOTHING still play for you, right? Yeah, keep that in mind when you talk about a new forward still finding his feet in a new league, new country and in a team that is NOT playing well at all. Peace and Love.

{Ed025's Note - I agree with you oli. Our forwards are a total waste of space…kackpoo would fit right in mate..?

Don’t know if you watched the game Ed, but I thought he looked very good. I agree he has been poor, he has had me worried after the first few games, but we’re such a mess it’s hard to judge.

I didn’t really see the logic in bringing in ANOTHER left sided forward, but maybe he isn’t going to end up playing their at all. He played in the Firmino role last night and did it very well.

The irony is that we’ve bought Darwin to play down the middle and Gakpo to play on the left, but right now they both look more comfortable swapping their positions.

{Ed025's Note - I did watch all the game AW but he failed to impress me at all mate. As you say it’s early days yet so I’m not putting him in the lemon bracket just yet..

I'm just not sure what he brings to the table, but I thought that about Bobby Firmino for his first few months so my opinion isn't worth a great deal.

Maybe if people actually give him more time and allow him to settle, you will see what he brings to the table. Just saying.
