I was thinking about a couple of unsung heroes for us.

Baros and crouch.

Anyone got any others? Lucus of course .

I'd take Crouch back in a heartbeat! One of my favourite players.

Yeah I liked Crouch, he gave it his all every single game, him and Kuyt. Far too many to list though.

Riise.

I'm saying Carragher.

All the years where Gerrard took the plaudits for being "the leader" and "single handedly winning finals" etc. Carragher was 3 times the leader Gerrard was, and he kept us in the Champions league final. Half the player maybe and Gerrard led the team in other ways, but Carra never got the recognition or respect mainly internationally and amongst other fans, but also amongst small sections of our own fans who wanted him replaced on multiple occasions and only realised how shocking our defence was when he retired and it all fell apart.

Not completely unappreciated as 3/ 4 of the Liverpool fan base loved him, but outside of that he never got enough credit. How many people had Carragher on their shirt? I'm sure some people did, but From 2004-2017 All i've seen in the flesh is Gerrard, Torres, Carroll, Coutinho, Firmino and Suarez! CARROLL!

That list says it all really. Almost all defensive players are undervalued. So Finnan and Lucas are also great shouts for me.

Hamann and Finnan.

I always rated Benayoun. Rodriguez and Bellamy (second spell) were handy too.

Crouch's goal to game ratio for England is up there with the best.

Dirk kuyt is a brilliant shout. Loved him, in the same way I love Bobby firmino.

Finnan came up a fair bit, what about babbel? The right back/ centre back. German I think, well he is German defo. Part of our last great defence. babbel, henchoz, hypia and? Didn't carragher play lb?

Dudek for sure. I will always love that man. Rise was pure class in his prime. Smicer was a favourite of mine, styled my play on Ian rush as a kid, used to buy "shoot" every week and practice Ian rush's techniques. They had a different thing every week. I learnt how to drop my shoulder to go past a man, how to send the keeper the wrong way. loads. I was a fairly decent Sunday league player. Top goal scorer for our team, still got the trophy. But as I got a bit older I used to watch Smicer and try and copy his style, I was a winger. We played 4 3 3.

Stephan henchoz for sure.

Hanman. not really unsung for me. He was a world class cm when he played for us and had a glittering career with Germany.

Baros was poor for a while (like crouch, it took ages for their first goal) but he proper found some form when we won the treble. Was a clever player.

Cb must be the least popular shirt though mk. It's not just carragher it's all cbs, unless they are amazing. I've seen quite a few carragher 23 shirts though

I was hoping you would answer my post mk, who else would you say without being ironic mate?

Benayoun is a top top shout. What a player. Nice one rbbb.

We'll aside from all defensive players like focused on initially, there have also been a few attacking players who never got their due respect.

Crouch, Benayoun, Kuyt etc as has been mentioned are all fair shouts. Another attacker who never got much love was Babel. He wasn't a great player, but he was a good impact sub for us with a pretty decent minutes to goal ratio. Not quite good enough, but he loved the club and had some truly memorable moments.

To put forward a handful of midfielders; Alonso was not fully appreciated until he was gone. Everyone credited Mascherano with protecting our defence, but it turned out he was actually doing a lot of nothing! Everyone thought Gerrard was the key to launching our attacks, but it was actually Alonso. I don't think we respected just how good he was until it was too late. We knew he was good, but he was the composer to a well orchestrated team and when he left weren't the same and still haven't really recovered. The season he left was the season we fell to pieces, and the year Real Madrid suddenly started challenging Barcelona again. No coincidence. He was the best midfielder of his era for me.

Another is Momo Sissoko. What i would give for a player like him back in the team today. He was so under rated.

Finally I'll put forward Danny Murphy. Was he exceptional? No. But i tell you what, he was always good for a goal against Man United and that alone makes him a cult hero for me. He was better at the close range free kicks than Gerrard for me. He could curl a ball and get it up and and back down as good as anyone from a set piece. People seem to forget he even played for us at times though!

Cool as f*** mk. I loved sissoko and of course alonso. You're right, he was somehow second fiddle to Gerrard and possibly hanman earlier. My
memory ain't great, alonso and hanman were at lfc together were they not? I totally forgot about sissoko. Yeah that's what we need. Hopefully keita can bring that dynamic.

I was going to mention babel but I know he is not that highly thought of here. I thought he was brilliant. Skillful as you like, scored some important goals and some great goals. Where znd why did he go?

Wright (cb)
Readler (cf)
Westerveld (gk)

Pat berger was a brilliant shout BTW

I loved Danny Murphy BTW. One of most underrated players ever for us. Talkabout versatile, I remember him playing up front! You alwaysknew he wouldn't miss a penalty. I tell you how I'd describe him: a very intelligent footballer, cunning as a light house rat.

Omg! I got a good one: Gary McCallister. Leg end. That long range free kick he tucked into the near post was bloody genius.

Sorry Superred, but Gary Mac wasn't under-rated by anyone at Liverpool! We knew he was class!

Under-rated:
Ronnie Whelan
Mark Lawrenson
John Scales
Stephane Henchoz
Steve Finnan
Jamie Carragher
(until he broke his leg at Blackburn and we all realised what he brought to the team)

25 Oct 2017 14:43:30
Fair enough Jim but I thought he deserved a mention. It's not really underrated players it's unsung heroes (if you read the first post) and they are very similar but essentially not the same thing. I always liked Gary, being half Scottish as I am but I wasnt 100% when we signed him for a cool Mil. Thought he was passed it but his cool head was a massive bonus for us. We wouldn't have done that treble without mcCallister.

25 Oct 2017 14:47:52
I'm not sure lawrenson is an unsung hero? He is one of the most celtbrated defenders in the history of the game. Scales ix a decent shout. Henchoz would be possibly my number one unsung hero. Hypia took all the plaudits while henchoz took all the balls in the face. Was well underwhelmed when we signed the two cbs and well chuffed that Xmas when we had shipped only 11 goals or something like that.

Ronnie whelan was pure class. Again not sure about unsung or underrated. I think all the first team players from that generation are generally celebrated by football fans all over the country. They were unplayablemost of the time. That really was a wave of red shirts flooding forward. What a sight. What a scare for defenders.

Super red-I thought Baros was a disappointment for us, he did okay but I was really exited when we signed him, we beat a lot of other big clubs for him and he looked a great prospect. He was a decent finisher but his head down style meant his link up play and vision wasn't very good, although personally he is a legend to me as I had a few quid on him winning the golden boot at euro 2004 at 50/ 1!
My unsung heros would be Crouch, Henchoz, Lucas, Finnan.

Henchoz.
