Ed001 did alonso leave us because of his love for Madrid or was it for other reasons? I’m worried if he does come if Madrid come calling next year will he just leave for them again? He has said Liverpool is his home before in an interview though.

Jackk

{Ed001's Note - it was of a falling out with Rafa.}

1.) 26 Jan 2024 12:58:15
Rafa wanted rid for Barry for some reason.

2.) 26 Jan 2024 13:16:23
Rafa tried to offload alonso and get in gareth Barry was it? That's the reason xabi decided to leave us.

3.) 26 Jan 2024 13:25:32
From what I have read it wasn't solely due to Rafa wanting to replace him with Barry, that was more of a follow up to the falling out.

Xabi wanted to stay with his wife who was in labour just before a CL tie in Italy, saying that he would meet up with the team once she had given birth.

Rafa insisted on him making a choice between travelling with the team or staying with his wife and Xabi chose his family (absolutely fair imo! ) .

The relationship between them was irreparably damaged as a result. I liked Rafa and had a lot of time for him, but this was a stupid decision and a bad way to act.

{Ed001's Note - Rafa has since said that same about it and he acted differently in similar situations later on.}

4.) 26 Jan 2024 13:42:24
If i remember rightly, he missed a game for the birth of his child, which upset Rafa, who himself managed through the death of a parent. So Rafa decided to offload him for Barry. Don't quote me on that though. I may be wrong.

5.) 26 Jan 2024 14:04:17
Rafa messed up big time and it was all his fault regarding Alonso leaving by pulling that ridiculous stunt asking Xabi to essentially pick the team or his fam during such a momentous occasion. Rafa can hold that L forever, IMO.

Ed 001 with you saying you think Trent should be moved into the midfield is Szoboszlai Trent macalister a solid midfield 3? Or do you think we need an actual 6? Or is Trent good enough there? Or when you say Trent in midfield do you mean in place of Szoboszlai or mac?

Jackk

{Ed001's Note - I would like to see him as a holding midfielder and I think it could be solid enough, at time Mac Allister can drop in to make it two deep if needed. It just allows us to keep the system in place regardless of injuries, as Bajcetic can play the role too or Lavia if were to arrive, for example.}

1.) 04 Aug 2023 15:48:34
I think there are a couple of problems with playing trent as a defensive 6. First being that it restricts his game more if he has to constantly think about positioning etc, which he will have to in that role. We don't want to blunt his best attributes. I also don't think he is a natural defender or defensive minded player which you need in that position. I feel he needs a player who loves that side of the game like a fabinho/ mascherano type next to him to allow him to do what he does best. Making him do the defensive side more would be bad for both the team and him. It's not a case of saying just do it to him, if it's not in his nature it won't work well. Just my opinion I know people may disagree.

2.) 04 Aug 2023 16:14:41
For me it’s either play 4 at the back with TAA as the deep play-making/ defensive midfielder OR play 3 at the back with TAA playing next to a Lavia type and sacrifice Robbo/ Tsimikas for a left-footed CB. But there aren’t too many suitable left-footed CB available (I’ve no idea why we didn’t go for Micky Van de Ven who IMO would have been ideal for this role) . Instead Pep and Klopp are trying to fudge it with TAA playing a dual role and it clearly doesn’t work for TAA or Robbo.
The only thing, as far as I know, that exits simultaneously in two places is a quantum particle. So I hope their hubris doesn't get in the way and they see what everyone else sees.

3.) 04 Aug 2023 17:02:53
Not sure of I like the system we've been playing either but the results massively improved once we changed to it. Arsenal was the first game and once we got to grips with the system after conceding a couple of goals we then went on to score 2 and concede zero against the team who was at the top of the league. We then went on to win every game up until Aston villa. With chances of top 4 gone for the final game klopp gave the majority of our starters the day off. We most likely would of won that game if he hadn't done so. Before the Southampton game we'd only actually conceded 1 goal in May. So using this new system we won 7 and drew 2 out of 9. Then if you count Southampton as a win it would of been won 8 out of 10 n drew 2. I know people aren't liking the system and I'm not sure I do myself but the truth is in the pudding really and the win ratio for those last 10 games was title winning form.

4.) 04 Aug 2023 17:07:51
I must be one of the few that thinks the system with TAA in this hybrid role might actually work to some degree. Provided our next few signings are the right ones.

5.) 04 Aug 2023 17:14:56
I think that Klopp is trying to keep Robbo playing in this system, but so far its not working,
yes we should have a number 6 in by now,
we should have a left footed CB in too,
we might not get the start we are all hoping for,
Matip has gone too slow also, needs replacing asap .

6.) 04 Aug 2023 17:52:05
If we find ourselves in a situation where we start with Thiago, Mac and zsoboslai. with jones, bajcetic, trent and Elliot as options doesn’t seem too bad to me.

We’d have to play extra offensive to try and out score other teams. But it is what it is, I’m just looking forward to the new season and see how we get on. I thing we’ll be just fine, I see us having a good season and our attack is so strong we will challenge for honours.

Nunez and gakpo have had their bedding in time, Diaz is back and can hopefully stay fit. The players will be up for the fight.

7.) 04 Aug 2023 19:55:00
There’s an argument TAA could play the “Alonso” role but won’t we miss him further up the field?

8.) 04 Aug 2023 21:04:35
Mickey - who are the signings that can cover the gaping holes the hybrid system leaves?

9.) 04 Aug 2023 19:41:01
I agree Ed01, I actually think Trent and Alexis would perform well as a double pivot in possession and we can then play 4 forwards (Diaz, Jota, Gakpo/ Nunez and Salah would be pretty effective front 4 with Trent pulling the strings IMO) . We can then play Gomez and Robbo as we don’t need to create with the overlapping fullbacks like we used to….

03 Aug 2023 17:53:06
Ed 001 what is your thoughts on the window so far? Are you slightly worried at all? If we can't get Lavia over the line and we end up with no CDM are we not screwed? We have lost so many players and only brought in 2 and the league starts in 10 days. I’m starting to panick now.

Jackk

{Ed001's Note - I don't think any of the transfer activity matters a jot. Like last season it is the tactics that will decide how well we do. We are once again going down the wrong route and so I am worried because of that. Who we buy or don't buy is not going to change that, so I am struggling to care one way or another about that to be honest. I am seriously worried and I can't see anything changing tactically between now and the start of the season.}

1.) 03 Aug 2023 18:10:49
Bang on the money there ed! I get a feeling we are going to see a carbon copy of errors that we seen last season, the same culprits are still in defence so its stupid to expect anything different along with tactics that will expose them even more . I honestly don't trust any of our defenders in this new formation especially robbo at inverted left back trent the same. I feel people give the manager way to much credit as he is central to all our issues.

{Ed001's Note - I think that is harsh, Klopp has brought us incredible success.}

2.) 03 Aug 2023 18:43:04
Well I think if we get a bad start the knives will come out, not so much from the fans….

3.) 03 Aug 2023 18:52:13
Harsh but half true klopp has brought much success but he is also allowing us to play this weird formation it will look brilliant when we get it right when it’s wrong we will have some really bad days . A mobile dm will help alleviate all these problems but I feel we are way too attack minded with our squad we need some balance ie defenders and defensive mid . Pretty sure the club will have to dig a bit deeper in the kitty to have any success next season .

4.) 03 Aug 2023 18:55:41
The inverted RB or LB is not a massive issue if the player has the ability to smell danger and prioritise there defending over attack and I just don’t think we have that type of player at the moment. I know it’s only pre season but there have been many occasions where TAA has been roaming over the left side of the pitch when in possession so us Zero chance of recovering if he looses the ball. For me I can’t see why we don’t keep him at RB and pushing on down the right side when I’m possession as he did when we won the league. If Klopp wants to allow space for Salah on the wing then get Trent to sit a little deeper on the right side of the midfield! Sometimes coaches get overly smart with tactics and formations, play your best 11, win your individual battles and have a solid defence because nobody wins a title with the goal left gaping.

5.) 03 Aug 2023 19:04:11
Hi Ed’s1
I haven’t been able to watch any of the friendlys so far so could you elaborate i bit more on the “wrong route” if you could please mate.

{Ed001's Note - the tactics are hopelessly narrow and exposing the defence. Salah often gets isolated on the right and we lack width offensively and defensively. And Robertson is all at sea defensively. We look a shambles to be honest. At least the press is back but with so much space down the flanks it is easy to break with a ball out wide.}

6.) 03 Aug 2023 19:22:47
Fans can’t have their opinions Ron now?

7.) 03 Aug 2023 19:22:47
Well if we have a season like last one I’m afraid Klopp will go.

8.) 03 Aug 2023 19:34:03
So are the tactics coming from Klopp or his coaches? I can’t understand how we persist with something when everyone can see the problems. It won’t matter how good any new signings are, they won’t cover up the holes in our system. We could be our own worst enemies this season.

9.) 03 Aug 2023 19:36:01
Ed I respect everything klopp has done and love him but I am a realist and can't live in the past, he underperformed for the best part of last season and his stubbornness and sentiment is really clear to see, if we don't see change he has to be took to task.

10.) 03 Aug 2023 19:41:22
So much for my summer break, Ed. ?.

11.) 03 Aug 2023 19:47:29
Not following you Jay.

I was referring to the fact that some people are not Klopp’s biggest fans, within the club, and will have the knives out for Klopp if he has a bad run.

I’m not talking about fans getting upset, I just mean maybe Klopp is not universally popular amongst non-fans.

12.) 03 Aug 2023 20:03:04
I don’t mean to go against the grain but before you all panic, this is the same system that brought us much improved form in the final 11/ 12 games of the season. I don’t know how much worry is realistic or warranted right now. The majority of goals we’ve conceded have been with the kids after wholesale changes, and even if it wasn’t, it’s still just pre season.

Not trying to contradict anyone’s opinion, just my own.

13.) 03 Aug 2023 20:09:10
I disagree on the tactics front (just my opinion, obviously) .

For the remaining 10 games of last season where we tried Trent in a more advanced role (a midfielder when we’ve got the ball, a RB when we haven’t) we ground out a really good run of results.

One stat that I don’t have to hand but it was something I was checking regularly throughout the season: if you take away our 9-0 and 7-0 freak scorelines against Bournemouth and United, we actually scored less than Leeds last season. I’d need to properly fact check this, but I’m sure that was the case before we changed tactics and nearly sneaked 4th place.

14.) 03 Aug 2023 20:42:29
I can see why at the end of last season we tried to pack the midfield with the inverted RB as we didn’t have players with the stamina or legs to close down space and press the opposition so we brought in an extra body (RB), we had some good results following the change in tactics so there is obviously some merit to maintaining it in some respect but I would worry that it would get found out very quickly and wouldn’t be a good idea to play this system against our Top 6 competitors as we would be cut to shreds…the ed is right with his concerns about being very narrow, if you watch back over the pre season games and even games at the end of last season a simple ball over the back line leaves us hopelessly exposed…teething problems perhaps but quiet a glaring weakness against pacey forwards.

15.) 03 Aug 2023 21:19:58
Can anybody name a manager, in any league in Europe, who can get regular champions league football with a mid-lower table net spend?

{Ed002's Note - Anyone outside of the major leagues.}

16.) 03 Aug 2023 22:08:59
Ed2. I mean with a mid-lower table net spend in there own league.
I can't think of 1.

{Ed002's Note - It is not about spending for many leagues - there are many that see small budgets across the board make success achievable. You will likely not see the likes of Burnley in the Champions League any time soon. But you may see Braga.}

17.) 03 Aug 2023 23:53:16
Transfer activity does matter a jot; especially when you consider that we could lose five midfielders.

04 Jul 2023 19:15:05
Ed 001 what is your opinion on Levi cowill? From clips he looks very good on the ball but that is all I have seen but everyone I see talking about him seems to think he is the next van dijk is he really worth the money people are quoting? Why would he not be starting every game for Chelsea then?

Jackk

{Ed001's Note - it is irrelevant what he has been doing for Chelsea. He is a very good player from what I have seen. I have no idea or interest in what people are quoting though, so not a clue about that sorry.}

1.) 04 Jul 2023 20:34:01
I’m never really a fan of when players are dubbed the next whoever as they rarely seem to live up to the billing of the original player .
Ed1 who would be your preferred cb addition this summer if money and logic had no barring .

I really liked the look of bastoni from inter really stood out in his games I watched in the champions league this year .

I presume being young and Italian and already at inter he’s pretty much untouchable.

2.) 04 Jul 2023 21:13:17
The next Marcel Desailly.
That one always sticks in my mind.

3.) 04 Jul 2023 21:38:56
Phil Jones next bobby moore.

4.) 04 Jul 2023 23:36:34
I hope United manage to unearth the next Harry Maguire.

5.) 04 Jul 2023 23:44:19
Bruno Cheyrou being the next Zidane. I’ll remember that one of my bloody deathbed.

6.) 05 Jul 2023 13:52:57
Neil mellor next Robbie Fowler
Spearing and rossiter next Gerrard

There's been a few stinkers.

02 Jul 2023 16:44:07
Ed 001 what’s your thoughts on Lavia? What’s his pros and cons would he a be a top signing in your eyes? Better than fab?

Jackk

{Ed001's Note - mobile and technically sound but lacks experience. You can't compare him with Fab after less than a full season in effect. Potentially better, yes, but right now there is no basis to compare.}

1.) 02 Jul 2023 20:31:27
Thuram just liked a post about Dom S. Rumours of offers for Thiago . Could we buy Lavia and Thuram? We have lost 4 MF's if you include the ghostly Arthur, and Thiago only plays 25 games a season.

Klopp has 3 seasons left, and we need to go full tilt, thrash metal total-football in his honour. Long live the king.
