Crystal Palace X Lens today and neither Adam Wharton, nor Mamadou Sangare were playing. Could be nothing, but since we've been linked to both, I must admit I find their absence mildly intriguing, specially since Wharton not even went to the WC so he should be fit.

Very common for coaches not to play their best players in these very early preseason friendlies. I wouldn't read into it. I believe most of the big name starters were missing from the game.

Sounds like Brentford are in for Sangare.

Wharton, another top dollar fee!
Hope Brighton do sign Sangare, that means Baleba to LFC, possibly far better potential and cheaper buy out clause. If Wharton is that good, why was he not in the England squad ahead of Henderson, for example.
Baleba has also played LB, that's the end of the Greek and two positions filled. Bajcetic will be kept on, Gomez to go, can't even manage one pre season game, he lets the club down every season now.

Wow Sangare would be a great signing for Brentford.

28 Jul 2026 21:19:50
Tough to say he lets the club down, 007. I don't doubt for a second he tries to do what he can to keep fit. It's up for the club to make plans to ensure when he's not fit, they're not overly affected.
6.) 28 Jul 2026
28 Jul 2026 21:27:15
007, being in the England squad or not, would have zero impact on me wanting to sign a player. Trent, forensic, Palmer, among others, weren't in that squad. Would have the 3 of them in a heartbeat. And, wouldn't be rushing to sign many of the players that did go.
Also, Gomez has never let the club down.
His body has let him down. He has been part of the club for years, and was a massive part of many of our best teams. It may be time to let him go because they have tried and can't keep him fit. Or he might have felt a twinge and will be grand in a week or 2.
7.) 28 Jul 2026
28 Jul 2026 21:40:16
Not sure if you meant to cause a stir, 007 (no pun intended), but I don't agree with your comment about Gomez.
The bloke has tried to be available as much as his body allows. Whenever he's fit and available, he's never let the team or is down.
He'll be more annoyed than anyone else with how his career has gone after that terrible knee injury on international duty. He played a hell of a lot before that and was instrumental for us.
8.) 28 Jul 2026
28 Jul 2026 21:46:21
Have you seen Wharton vault an advertising board??!
9.) 28 Jul 2026
28 Jul 2026 21:49:32
I can't see any PL club coming in for Gomez, he's a sick note full stop.
170 PL apps (Some of those come on as a sub). He was signed June 2015, 11 years, circa 17 games a season, plays half a PL season on average. He's the past not the future. Why do you feel sorry for him and not the club? Who have to pay him a big salary when he's not fit for half a season on average.
I will always put the club first, not an individual player, LFC has always been bigger than any player past and the future.
YNWA 97 and 20.
They can't give the treatment table, a fresh coat of paint because he's always on it!
10.) 28 Jul 2026
28 Jul 2026 21:56:26
It's fair to say Gomez is stealing a living with us. He should've been let go and replaced years ago.
11.) 28 Jul 2026
28 Jul 2026 22:03:03
I wish he would just score a goal so we could let him go.
12.) 28 Jul 2026
28 Jul 2026 22:03:56
I don't get the scramble for Wharton when we have the chance to develop Nyoni, who I think has a higher ceiling than Wharton.
13.) 28 Jul 2026
28 Jul 2026 22:18:22
Wharton is a world class passer who will feed the goats, so they will score.
14.) 28 Jul 2026
28 Jul 2026 22:38:17
Please don't use the word ceiling.... just makes me think I'll have to get a ladder out when decorating his house.

I understand the frustration with Gomez's injuries, but can't get the hate.
Started to form a very good partnership with Virgil early on.
Seems like a nice chap who everyone in the team likes.
Always thought Virgil looked more comfortable with Joe beside him.
Been here 10 years. Managers must have seen something in him to hope he gets through his injury problems.
Maybe his presence around the club is important.
At some point the lad could have been possibly one of the best of the English defenders. Injuries have buggered his career.
I'd be happy to keep him around as part of the squad, and would love to see him finally score.
16.) 28 Jul 2026
28 Jul 2026 22:44:15
Gomez has been a let down for years, poor management, full stop.
No other business would have kept such a weak link.
17.) 29 Jul 2026
28 Jul 2026 23:42:02
I love Joe Gomez, met him at a service station with his then pregnant Mrs and he was so humble.
Very talented defender but there's only so much sentiment u can have.
If he was on appearance money only he would have to take a 2nd job.
Really feel for the guy, but u have to represent if u getting paid these amounts of money.
18.) 29 Jul 2026
29 Jul 2026 02:28:05
Wharton 'should' be fit. Lol, if he's coming, he better turn up fit, man lol.
19.) 29 Jul 2026
29 Jul 2026 01:18:36
Jog on with your Gomez criticism! He gets offered a lucrative contract and he signs it.all of you whiny little girls would have done the same. He doesent get injured on purpose. Is he the same player as he was years ago of course not but he knows it's in his financial interest to stay at Liverpool because he wouldn't get comparable or better terms anywhere else.
I don't want Gakpo at the club but if he stays because we were dumb enough to offer him a bumper contract and he can't get that paper anywhere else than he has my blessing to stay here. You have to understand these guys aren't fans they are paid employees. They will look out for their own interests and so they should
20.) 29 Jul 2026
29 Jul 2026 06:21:27
Jari, absolutely, regardless of the sentiment, players have 10-15 years at best to make up for the rest of their lives. And there can only be so many pundits and coaches, not all of the retired players will have a successful career around football or anywhere else for that matter.
It's a multibillion corporate machine vs a little guy we're talking about, never mind the wages, and since we are allowed to have favourites, JG is one of them, stretches he was for under Klopp were peak imo, and he deserves whatever contract he's on currently.
Kudos to him and his reps for managing to take advantage of the situation and lack of prudence on management's part. I just wish regular folks were represented in their day jobs same way as these players.
21.) 29 Jul 2026
29 Jul 2026 07:14:02
Gomez should have been gone out of the club years ago. To average 17 games a season in the league over a 12 year career with us is ducking laughable. Nice fella it seems. So am I though, but trust me, if I can't do my job more than 50% of the time I'll soon be on the dole.
It's not whining saying he shouldn't be here, I'm saying it years. It's common sense, pure and simple.
{Ed001's Note - are you sure you are a nice guy?}
22.) 29 Jul 2026
29 Jul 2026 07:56:43
Yeh, salt of the earth ed?look I don't blame the bloke for not turning down contract offers he's probably settled with kids. And obviously he doesn't mean to get injured. But from a sporting perspective of a team trying to win the best league in the world I stick to my opinion them at it's laughable that he keeps getting offered these contracts or that he hasn't been told he's better off moving on by now.274 appearances in all comps in 11 years is a terrible record.
23.) 29 Jul 2026
29 Jul 2026 09:27:46
"274 appearances in all comps in 11 years is a terrible record"
That's not all due to injury though. He was competing with other (better) players at RB and CB, but has always done his best when called upon. The team need players like that as much as those that start every game.
24.) 29 Jul 2026
29 Jul 2026 09:57:46
Footballers' careers can't be compared to a non-footballer.
They will "soon be on the dole" because their career is short. 20 years would be "mid career" for non-footballers, whereas footballers will be lucky to do 20 years.
25.) 29 Jul 2026
29 Jul 2026 10:20:39
The team need players that do their best when called upon?? I should bloody hope so. Are you guys for real? Does Joey G have compromising photos of all of you with ladies of the night or something? I know Ron, they'll have to count them pennies for the rest of their lives after a career in the Premier League.
I like Gomez as much as the next guy, seems like a good guy, but I'm always amazed by the love in for him on here every summer when this discussion comes up. People are willing to write the likes of Bradley and Isak off, not a bother. Joe is literally our Phil Jones and we laughed at his Utd career.
26.) 29 Jul 2026
29 Jul 2026 11:13:56
ManCalledHorse, clearly context is lost on a lot of people.
27.) 29 Jul 2026
29 Jul 2026 11:34:54
And common sense, Oli. Let's not all pretend that the only reason Joe averaged under 25 a season was because of our great CBs. Whenever the bloke has the chance to make a position his own, his body breaks down after a couple of games.
Sometimes in the first game. Going back practically to when he signed for us as a kid. You all know this. Like the Twilight Zone on here sometimes. Ok, let's not even try to sign a CB, we have 4 including Joe. I'm sure the season will go swimmingly.
28.) 29 Jul 2026
29 Jul 2026 12:23:00
I think it's the romantic notion that he'll get his first goal for us, it's a bit like Rob Jones imo.
{Ed001's Note - 100% that for me, I really want him to score before he leaves!}
29.) 29 Jul 2026
29 Jul 2026 12:23:29
@Florian, don't be childish - of course we will sign a CB and it won't be because Joe is either going or staying. Some of us get it that others want Joe to go. After 5 or 6 years of the same conversation, most people are, at least a little bit, aware.
If the club offer him a new contract, that's fine - Joe still serves a purpose within the squad - if not, then thanks for the memories, Joe, and best of luck for the future.
30.) 29 Jul 2026
29 Jul 2026 13:07:42
So just say we sign one more CB if he stays, WDW, do you think we sign two if he goes? I don't.
31.) 29 Jul 2026
29 Jul 2026 13:17:15
Florian, can we know what you do for work so we can suggest a like for like scenario.

No, you're ok, Faith. Don't see the relevance, mate.
