3 points is the most important thing but lessons must be learned, I know fab was a last minute change (on the day) but Elliott as part of a midfield 3 is a non starter for me, great touch and passing in the final third but not mobile enough and very weak on the ball in areas where we can’t afford to loose the ball as evidenced tonight! Hendo had an off game which we just couldn’t afford to have and that was the main issue tonight. Defence tried to play a high line but pressure from midfield was non existent so the pass over the back line was always on, naturally the defence dropped off to cut off the space and then the distance between midfield and defence was huge and we stopped winning 2nd balls…all clear evidence that a mobile and b2b midfielder is crucial asap! On a positive Nunez is a beast and once he hits a goal scoring purple patch he will be unstoppable particularly when he lines up with Diaz and Salah ??.

{Ed001's Note - and how is Elliott meant to learn if he doesn't get games? He won't learn by playing 5 minutes at the end. You have to allow kids to make mistakes.}

Him playing in that (non) system is borderline abuse. What do they do in training?

Elliot is playing in system not designed for the current crop of players. I mean the combination of midfielders is all wrong and non of them really compliment each other. Also, he is having to track back and defend more than he should due to a virtually non existent midfield, which is not helping him instead of concentrating on playing further up the field. What do you want him to do?

I agree that the system we are playing is completely wrong for our players and is making them look worse than they are. Personnel does play a part and I would like to see a new midfielder being brought in in Jan, but if we keep playing this system, it would still struggle regardless of who we bring in.

Elliot is not a midfielder he’s a forward. I have been saying exactly the same as Ed1, we need to give the young players games but he needs to be higher up the pitch where it’s not so disastrous when he looses the ball and he can create things.
At the moment he’s just not offering anything and it’s doing him more harm than good.

Where do you play Elliott further up the pitch though?
You can’t drop one of the quick forwards for him.
He can’t (as yet) play the Bobby role, with his back to goal for much of the time.
I’ve termed it ‘the Suso conundrum’; it reminds me of the dilemma of where to play him exactly.
At the moment, I’m thinking a deeper-lying playmaker type or developing some of Thiago’s skill set.
I don’t like him stuck out on the wide right in tight games, he just doesn’t do enough there.
If two midfielders came in, where would he go?

Alonso what do you mean by the I agree that the system we are playing is completely wrong for our players mate.

Everything about Elliot screams number 10.
Same with Carvalho, they’re too slow for wingers. Not enough power for a Klopp midfield.
Minamino Esc type players that are good, but don’t necessarily fit a Liverpool 433 at the moment.

I agree liverpoolfc8 but I think once the team sorts out its press we can definitely get the best out of these young players in a midfield 3, but I think they need power runners next to them. I can see Elliot and carvalho sharing the Thiago role longer term with a 6 and an 8 beside doing the dog work. I also think Jones could play that role well too and he has shown that. Just wish he could stay fit!

I agree that the younger players need minutes on the pitch to learn and there will be bumps along the road as a consequence I just can’t see him playing as a high intensity midfield 3, he doesn’t have the strength at the moment in his ball retention and tackling to play that role and is leaving us badly exposed, it’s not coincidental that many teams target down that side and are getting free runs at Trent…believe it or not this isint an attack on Elliott because I think he has great qualities but just don’t see how he fits into our system as a midfield 3 ( with our other non mobile midfielders) but equally can’t see him squeezing out one of our attackers. Either a change of system is required which I don’t see happening or maybe a loan deal to a mid premiership club where he can get some valuable game time?
