Have there been transfers that you personally thought were either excellent business / terrible business but went on to be the exact opposite.

How about Liverpool players?
Harry Kewell was a disappointment to me.

Not a signing that didn't work out, but thought we should have signed Anelka years ago. Brought Diouf instead. Still hurts.

Agree thought Kewell would have been a good signing, liked Barmby as well. Thought Robbie Keane was a brilliant signing, shame that didn't work.

I heard a story about why he didn't last too long in his second Spurs spell, but it's potentially actionable, so I'd best keep it to myself.

Great post. For me most disappointing was Ryan babbel. Great player speeed everything just bit of a soft attitude. Should’ve signed Anelka. Worst signing Paul konchesky or Andy Carrol. Best signing firmino just a quality player drifting between lines creating play opening the game for Salah and mane. What a team. I hope we can get one more great team out of klopp before he goes. Special mention for Joe Cole and David ngog lol we have previously scraped the barrel. People on here should remember this when they talk poorly of fsg. They may not be perfect but there’s no David ngog in the team.

Weirdly for me it was Joe Cole. I had watched so many interviews with his former teammates about how much talent he had and that it was unfortunate he couldn’t fully show it at Chelsea. Then he came to us and got a bloody red card on his debut!

I'll be completely honest. I didn't rate Milner when we signed him. I know, I know - but I was converted after a couple of games! Most disappointing? Diouf. Can't stand that tw. it.

Most disappointing Diouf or Keita for different reasons

Biggest ‘what could have been’ Jati Litmanen - I know he played and won stuff with us but if he’d been with us before the injuries ….

Biggest surprise effect Robbo, Millie and Suarez who was better on the pitch than the biggish reputation at Ajax. Not the nicest of people perhaps but I think there were probably reasons for that too.

Biggest one for me was probably Danny Ings. Really thought he'd be awesome for us and then back to back knee injuries just ended it all.

Kewell biggest disappointment for me, thought we signed the best player in the league at the time. I can't fathom how he ended up so poor for us.
Robbo was the 1 that I ended up with egg on my face, couldn't understand at time why we trying to sign him.
What a player he turned out to be.

Benteke Was a waste of a shirt for me. Just walking around the pitch all game looking uninterested. Also expected big things from Fabio Berini. That might have been to do with the fact that I watched YouTube clips of him, as I hadn’t really seen him play, and he looked like a world beater. Maybe my expectations were too high. I try not to do the YouTube thing anymore when we sign anyone.

We immediately signed him from Sheff Wednesday as the Roger Hunt replacement.

For me, I was so excited as a young kid when signing Kewell. Remember checking teletext daily to see if he’d sign. A shame that injuries robbed him the chance of showing his true form for us especially as he turned down the cream of Europe to join us.

Biscan (hear me out on this one. I naively just assumed he’d be awesome from day 1 after watching Mario Stanic score screamers for Chelsea. Biscan did turn into a cult hero by the end)
Keita (me telling anyone who’d listen that he’s a Sadio Mane clone in midfield)

With players like Joe Cole, the morale of supporting us was at an all time low then and wasn’t expecting much.

Biggest disappointments for me have been Keita, Benteke, Carroll, but mostly it’s good youth players that didn’t make it with us for whatever reason - Wilson, Suso, Texeria.

Nicest surprises have been Robertson, Riise and Gomez (given the latters price at £3.5m and went straight into the first team as a 17 year old if I remember. Despite his lack of form now considering these things and his PL winning season he’s been a bargain. Always happiest when a player comes through from the youth though so happy with Trent, Jones, Elliott and Sterling.

I am quite sure it was only injury that ruined Aquilani his ankle problems where worse than the club thought upon signing. Unless Gerrard stood on his ankle in training I can see no other reason for his torrid time with Liverpool.

{Ed001's Note - he was fit for months and Rafa didn't put him in the team because he realised he had been sold a pup. He was just not very good in reality and Rafa had not checked on him properly, instead trusting his scouts. The scouts got it wrong, he just wasn't a good player.}

When we sold the best and most mobile number 9 in world football in Suarez and then bought the most immobile striker in world football in Balotelli. We didn’t recover until Klopp come in.

Sadly I didn't expect much from Balotelli, couldn't believe we signed him, his attitude sucked, not a team player. Jermaine Pennant, I liked, thought for the time he was with us, a useful player. Even if it was just for the screamer against Chelsea.

Antonio Nunez I was excited about when we brought him in from RM in exchange for Owen. How wrong I was. Litmanen could have been so good, shame that didn't work out.

Stan Collymore was another one, when we signed him, I thought him and Fowler, would bring us the league. Again had some good moments.
