Obviously with Mcallister and Szbo they had a release clause, so we only heard the news by the time the fee was sorted. Lavia does have a release for Man City next year. This makes agreeing a fee harder to do this summer. I wonder if every player should try and negotiate a reasonable release clause in their contracts. Easier said than done and we wouldn't be happy if our players had them either.

Why does it make it harder? There’s no guarantee city will take them up on, Rodri still has years left at the top level and looks after himself well.

The only way the City buy back clause matters is if it’s 2024.

If anything I’d say the release clause next year makes it easier. Latvia’s value is not going to be any higher at Southampton than what is right now after a good season in the prem. let’s say he’s stays at Southampton, a year down the line playing in a lesser league and a year less on his contract. City aren’t going to be taking that up at 40m clause even if he tears up the championship. A guarantee of in and around what they probably could but likely won’t get next year right now for a player that it seems like he wants to join LFC is a pretty good deal in anyone’s book. Much more than £40m and I’d be walking away if I was LFC.

Yes agree with the above post that 40M is a good deal and should really suit both parties. However Southampton are pushing for more, as I guess that they also have to factor in a 20% sell on fee back to City, which would be 8M, so quite substantial. However if Southampton push for more its a risk as no guarantee City will take him back for the 40M buy back. I can see them agreeing around 40M with additional bonuses built in. let's see but sounds like he wants to join us and I trust Klopp and if he lives up to his potential could be a really nice signing.

Again, it's only click bait tittle tattle, but latest reports are that Soton would accept £40m (guaranteed) plus add ons. I'd say that's a decent deal for a 19yo talent who will qualify as HG too.

{Ed002's Note - They rejected a £40M bid from another side.}

OP, I don't understand your premise. Southampton have told anyone who cares to listen that it will take 50m or thereabouts to get Lavia off their hands so that my as well be a glorified release clause, IMO.

And as someone said, there is no guarantees that City would take up that option and further more, City is not a factor this season anyway so again, I don't see how it is harder or easier. The price is what it is for this season and IMO, the club did not bid 37m for him without knowing they will prolly have to pay in or around 50m to get him season so City or whoever become a non factor next season. We shall see.

Ah so another club didn’t just jump in at the full asking price either. Disgusting behaviour ?.

{Ed002's Note - There was no asking proce at the point of the offer.}

If the other club offered 40 and got turned down and then we deciding to offer 37, I’d now like to see us go back in with a 32 mill offer just to mix it up and keep everyone on their toes.
