With the inaugural club World Cup soon set to start, I’d be interesting to see how this will affect the competing teams for next season. For me I think it will only hinder a long upcoming season, and as we have seen with Salah this season, breaks for players definitely contributes to better performance. Hypothetically if Liverpool were invited for the next CWC (if that’s how you get into it) would it be worth playing? Considering there is a reported $40M prize for the winner.

It’s €125M for winning. The best way to get in is to win the CL. That is how Chelsea and City have qualified. The other spots of the 12 assigned to European teams are given to the best ranked eligible teams based on the last 4 years performance in Europe. Only 2 teams per league are allowed to enter (unless 3 or more teams from the same league win the CL during the qualifying period) so even though we would qualify through our ranking we can not take part because 2 English teams had already qualified automatically.

Its a money spinning show pony. Pointless, other than for cash.

It's a very convoluted way of getting the teams FIFA wants there to make the most amount of money possible. Not the best teams but it does mean the Spanish, Italian and other top European teams can compete with the English clubs financially in lots of cases. Only surprise is they couldn't find a way to get Barcelona there.

I can remember our first game in the world club trophy ( or whatever it was called) we got well beaten by Flamengo 3 nil. the next time we played it, I think it was against Independente from Argentina . we lost 1 nil but played far better.

Personally I think it’s dead interesting to see clubs from different parts of the world play each other. Yes European football is top quality but how do we know if culturally and tactically it’s better than South American footy unless we have a tournament?
Also all clubs do pre-season tours and what better way to get “match fit” than in a tournament with £100M prize! There’s your Isak fund right there.

Is it mandatory for clubs invited to attend? Not that they wouldn't with the money on offer but it seems a bit mad that players literally have no rest time now.
Also, probably a stupid question, but is this Club World Cup replacing the one that used to be held over X-Mas and New Year between the winners of the CL and equivalents in other continents, or are they two entirely different things?

It’s an expanded replacement of the previous tournament Westwood, involving more teams from more countries. And the CL winner doesn’t get a bye straight into the final any more.
