{Ed's Note - Ed001 has posted a new player profile about, Roberto Baggio

Cheers Ed, I remember him mainly when he announced himself in the 1990 world cup as one of the standard stars along with Toto Schillaci (who sadly passed away last year)

Also reminds me. Sergio Goycochea when you get a chance Ed. only been a few years since I asked lol.
{Ed001's Note - I must have forgotten to note it down sorry.}

Great write up, Ed. Would you put him at the top of the tree for Italian players? Im lucky enough to remember Zoff and Maldini but Baggio would be close to no.1.
{Ed001's Note - for ones I have seen, yes, he is right up at the top as the best attacking player. Hard to decide between him and Maldini overall though.}

standout* not standard.

Christ, he was a great player. that World cup Italia 90 was the best ever world cup for me after 78.just a great atmosphere and nearly every game was a good un. I think baggio was kept out the team for a bit by Vialli. also sadly missed. back then also you'd have Italian footy on a Sunday on ch 4.so it was great to watch players like him.

Thanks Ed. I requested this a few years ago to and just thought you where making your way through the list of requests. What a player. I was so excited when he joined Inter as I thought he would be the perfect partner for Ronaldo. Sadly it didn't work out that way and I don't think they had to much time on the pitch together. One of my favourite players to watch ever.
{Ed001's Note - he was in the list for Legends of the Game article, I usually do a profile to accompany that.}

Still waiting for Del Piero 4 or 5 years on ?.
I jest. Thank you, Ed, another great read!
{Ed001's Note - sorry mate.}

Baresi was pretty special too around that time but Maldini had it all.

Juventus moved Baggio on because they thought the upcoming Del Piero was a far better potential star (and they played the same position) . I couldn't understand it at the time, and history has proven right that Baggio was indeed a far better player when it came to footballing skills. A magician with what he could do with a football.
{Ed001's Note - actually, it was because of the manager, who wanted hard work rather than flair. Was it Sacchi? I forget now, but he had barely played for a season and was unwanted. Nothing to do with Del Piero.}

TY Ed.
{Ed001's Note - welcome mate.}

Excellent stuff Ed, I’m a big fan of RB, you’ve educated me too, I never knew about his knee history stemming from that early in his career.
{Ed001's Note - that's good then, learning new things is always good for you. It helps keep your mind working and healthy.}

I was lucky enough to see him, Maldini, Baresi, Batistuta, etc, in the flesh but sadly not R9.
25 Jul 2025 17:50:09
Ed could it have been Lippi? Sacchi is known as a manager of Milan, the Italy national team and I think Parma. I'm not sure he managed Juventus. Lippi could have around about that time. I know Juventus were renowned for selling their forward players each year for a while in the 90s. I thought it was to balance the books. I didn't realise it was to get more work horses. Surely if u have a talent at your disposal like Baggio then you find players to compliment him and not replace him with someone who runs more.
{Ed001's Note - I think you're right. Lippi sounds right, I think Sacchi was his manager at Italy who did find a way to shoehorn him in.}

Thanks Ed001, made me go to YT and watch some of his highlight reels.
He was one of the first global superstars I remember from then, with R9 following on after him.
He just seemed to have SO MUCH TIME - it's like his brain was working so fast that the other players were in slo-mo (a bit like Peter Maximoff - Quicksilver - in the X-Men films! )
Thank you for that write up!
{Ed001's Note - that is a great way to put it, he made it all look so effortless.}

Paul mcgraths performance against Baggio and Italy in USA94 was as good a cb as ever I seen considering the quality of Baggio and mcgrath carrying a shoulder injury.
