One for fellow fans of our 90s wreckage. Who should have taken over from Kenny? The only other names in the mix aside from Mad Graeme were, I think, Toshack, Venables and Phil Thompson.
I kind of think Venables would have been fun, but not sure we would have won a lot.
{Ed001's Note - Toshack.}

Interesting Ed. At the time, he was seen as the progressive manager - but then he seemed
to disappear.

Yeah I totally forgot about Toshack lad's. Why him Tris?
{Ed001's Note - loved Tosh, he was ahead of his time.}

Can't argue with Ed01. At the time, though, I was over the moon with Souness. It soon went down hill. FA cup win against Pompey, everything else was forgettable.

I meant Sunderland. Pompey was the semi.
15 Nov 2025 17:14:44
Must be a while since you remembered a semi Rome ?.

You're not wrong there, Barry! Hope you're well, mate.

Keeping great brother YNWA ?.

I always fancied Martin O'Neil.
{Ed025's Note - i have never seen him in a basque and suzzies Lenny so cant really comment mate.. :)

Thought at time we should've went for alan Hansen. Dunno whether he would've taken it but would've been my choice.
Toshack would've been a much better choice than souness in hindsight.

I was a season ticket holder at Fratton and always thought Venables was great. So him.
16 Nov 2025 00:26:32
Toshack would have been a good shout . managed Real Madrid twice i think. you know why it never happen Ed.
{Ed001's Note - I don't know sorry.}

Digger, I’m not sure Hansen was ever interested in becoming a manager.
16 Nov 2025 05:11:08
I always thought john barnes should take the reins. But then i know more about duplo than football.

Hansen, by his own admission, didn't have the mental toughness to become a manager. Barnes is my all time hero, but I think he proved at Celtic he wasn't cut out for management.

Hansen didn’t want the job. There’s a famous story of him conspiring with Ronnie and Roy to wind the dressing room up that he’d been appointed manager and how much he was going to change things - which worked perfectly until one of the Irish apprentices who were listening in phoned home and told his parents to bet everything on Jocky getting the job.
Easy to say in hindsight, but the board should have left Ronnie in charge and waited until the summer.

I knew a few of the Liverpool lads who was at Tranmere when Barnes was there. they said he didn't have a clue, even said McAteer was better with the players n training but he's known as Trigger, so shows how bad Barnes must have been.

Being young at the time, I thought Souness would be the logical choice. However, seeing Julian Dicks, Neil Ruddock and Dean Saunders play for Liverpool made me regret that concept pretty quickly. Even more so when you saw Houghton, Beardsley and Staunton do well after being sold.
In hindsight, Tosh seems like the clear and sensible choice at the time. Although, perhaps the very best choice was to go with Roy and Ronnie until Kenny was ready again - just imagine!
