We'll be paying a premium for them, as Athletic Bilbao have a strict internal rule about Basque players being the main bulk of the squad. So they never let them go cheaply.

Athletic Bilbao are not a selling club - if any other club meets a player's release clause, that's not selling, which happened with Kepa to Chelsea, Herrera to United, Laporte to City or Javi Martinez to Bayern.
For his latest contract extension, running until 2031, both Mikel Jauregizar and the club agreed on not inserting a release clause, as he does not wish to leave the club.

Not sure that's true, Magnus, mate. Pretty sure all contracts in Spain must contain a release clause. Nothing to stop them setting it ridiculously high though.

What Rugby Parker said. I'm pretty sure that release clauses are compulsory in Spain. But they don't have to be reasonable though. That's why we see release clauses of 1b for players like Pedri and Lamine.
