Carra great info as always man.
Would there be a scenario where Alonso agrees to join next season and Slot accepts that and rides out the current season?
Is that what you meant by no interim?
12 Dec 2025 08:31:37
what would happen if Slot got the team playing well then won the CL and finished in top 4, or similar scenario? To then start the following season with Alonso would seem high risk.

Would seem downright crazy.

Barakdee. do you really think that would happen . Slot has ruined our chances of being champions again . lucky to finish in the top 4 this season. if he was a top class manager he would have seen how bad our play was n changed it pronto but he continued to play this way despite the results n the groans from everywhere.
I hope he can turn our season round playing good football n winning plenty of games but I wouldn't bet a £10 on it.

Slot is still young, inexperienced and like a lot of good young coaches somewhat arrogant, stubborn and aloof. At the same time, he wouldn't have reached the level he is at without those qualities. It's whether he has the capacity to reflect and learn that is what we are interested in, and I think it is pretty disappointing that so many people are certain that he can't after less than half a season of uneven results.
He's been thrown into the cauldron this season with players that maybe didn't exactly fit the profile of what he was looking for, the death of Jota, the contract situations and now the standoff with Salah, weathering the first real period of protracted bad form in his career, non-stop press scrutiny in the toughest league in the world. He's made bad choices here and there, nobody is excusing him from that, but he is learning on the job. I think he's too intelligent not to know that he's made mistakes, but in reality he is still learning on the job.
The question is whether we give him the time to learn and trust that he can first of all keep us from conceding stupid goals and then consolidate the foundation for us to be an all-conquering side again. Suggesting that Xabi or Iraola would do a much better job is seriously speculative to me.
Not that I don't respect both coaches a lot, if push came to shove and Slot's position became untenable I would welcome either of them. But Iraola is an unknown quantity when it comes to managing an elite team and if you think that Xabi is a better man manager than Slot or less headstrong in his ways when it comes to his philosophy of football, you are in for an unpleasant surprise. Maybe the two of them would be better in terms of developing our academy players, this is one aspect that I think Slot leaves a LOT to be desired, but Xabi is also known to be quite a cold, cerebral and distant coach who doesn't get pally with the players.

Well Stromsgodset, we have beaten Arsenal, Real, Inter this season without conceding - 3 fellow top 8 contenders. In 80-81, 04-05, we had terrible league campaigns whilst transitioning teams and won Ole Big Ears.
Wouldn't be surprised if we do so again, especially as our current team is more suited to the pace of Europe. That will hopefully change once Wirtz becomes adjusted to the English game and Isak gets his form back.

PB . half of season of uneven results . you mean half of season of terrible results . isn't it the worst in 70odd years, seems a lot of excuses being made for Slot . im not saying Alonso or Irola are the next superstar managers but il guarantee they will get a better tune of this squad
Joe buck, big deal with beat 3 teams, with our squad we should but you glossed over the fact that we've been hammered by not so glamorous teams .
n when we won the trophies you mentioned, we had Sir Bob and Rafa as our manager then . no comparison to Slot . Btw im all in for Liverpool winning everything, love it if Slot proved me wrong.
12 Dec 2025 13:49:12
You think Rafa was a good manager?
Personally I think winning a league title requres more talent than a CL.
12 Dec 2025 15:36:44
D-day. Rafa was a great manager . won trophies everywhere he went except at the bitters . we had no chance of winning the leagu3 with Hick n Gilette at the helm . he got us to the final of the champs league 2 years later, BTW we won the champs league 6 times we've won the league 20.

Winning a title is one thing but retaining it is another. You have a target on your back. There's not a huge number of managers who have won back-to-back league titles and they are all certified legends of the game, so to suggest that Slot is a failure because he hasn't won the league twice in his forst two years in the prem is pretty unfair.
He likely, and sensibly, thought that he would change the system this season. Since we have a target on our back, he suspected most other managers would have a plan to counter last season's tactics. As a manager you have to constantly evolve. Pep does it. Klopp did it. They all do it. Sometimes it doesn't work, and you have to decide whether to stick or twist. If you stick, the players get more used ot the system and you may play your way out of it. If you decide to twist and that doesn't work either, do you twist and twist again like is being called for? That woiuld be as equally mad. It's a losr-lose situation.
Let's call it as it is. A very very difficult job, and he's not failing because he isn't going to win the league back to back.
12 Dec 2025 17:24:37
Stoneage. well who to blame for our season . by your reckoning a manger who changed a winning system to this whatever you want to call this system. N why because we have a target on our back . we are Liverpool we should well be used to team who think when they play us its their cup final but imagine if he kept the same system n these new players just joined an already winning system, imagine where we'd be now .
most probably top of the table with a very happy camp.

Good post Patrik. Whilst I’ve been a critic of Arne’s I’d be happy if he stayed with us, as that would presumably mean that we’d improved results wise. Arne won’t be with us for long though unless our league results pick up significantly.
The main proviso for me is that as well as results improving we also need to see the style of football evolve again. It doesn’t need to be heavy metal style, but passive football isn’t going to be sustainable for him medium term even if results continue to improve.
I suspect he is learning, even though he’s stubborn. It seems to be a thing with most young coaches to stick to their principles and philosophies even when they’re not working. I don’t get the inflexibility myself, but it’s common across the league at the moment.

Patrik
Where did you find out that Alonso was a quite cold, cerebral and distant coach?
I’m always amazed how posters find this stuff out. Unless there’s a host of players that have come out and said so, I can see no other way to know such stuff?♂️.
