How would you rate last summer's transfer window?
Seems like key areas were overlooked again and some of the players signed were not good enough. Same old story too many squad players not enough quality first team players.
What positions do you think need addressing in the summer? Who would you want, realistically?
Surely a top GK, first team LB, CB, CM and a top CF. But that's half the team so which should be prioritized?

I'd say 7/ 10, Matip and Mane were exactly what we needed and Wiji's been OK. We wanted a left back but Miller's done the job, in general, very well so that hasn't been to much of a negative. The only misstep was Karius, he may end up being top class but we needed someone who is top class now and he wasn't ready.

The big mistake last summer was buying wijnaldum IMO. Nothing against him but it was probably the last position we needed filling.
We need 3-4 players in our starting 11 to really challenge but we shouldn't expect to be filling them all this summer.
Time to start at the back, get karius in goal and if there is no improvement then bring a keeper in.
Strong CB needed, who that is i haven't got a clue as i don't watch enough football to comment.
After that a LB, milner has done a fairly decent job at the end of the day he isn't a LB.
If we filled them 3 positions with 3 quality players then that would be a top transfer window.

Even if we buy an older gk on the wain until karius is ready I would be pleased. Someone with the balls to shout at and organise the defence who doesn't flap and make everyone else nervous around him. Get the best cb we can buy. A lb that can cross and has some positional sense and awareness. And some one who can play alongside hendo or deputise for him in his absences. If we do this I will be pleased and hopeful that it would go along way to cutting out the mistakes and keeping us confident and composed in defence. in an ideal world maybe we get a lw or even a top cf but I'm being realistic and prioritising.

Keeping hold of Lovren and Mignolet was the biggest disaster under Klopp and he is paying heavy price. Milner was a foolish idea. Absolute foolish idea from a manager who had world class wing backs back at Dortmund.
Wijnaldum is a brilliant ACM not a CM and never be one. Not buying another winger or playing one from the academy has also cost him brutally.
Inspite of buying 5 players we are still short of another 5 more players says a lot about summer recruits.

5/10 in hindsight (wonderful thing) .
We signed an injury prone, albeit good centre back in Matip.
A young keeper no better than Ward, in Karius.
Klavan is not an upgrade on Kolo.
Gini has been very under rated for us. Consistently a 7/ 10 performer.
Mane has been a revelation.
Grujic was no better than Brannagan, Teixeira or Ejaria.
About a 50% success rate hence my 5/ 10 rating.

MK, Grujic has not played enough for him to be judged so your evaluation of him is a bit harsh. I'd give our summer signings a 7/ 10 as well but can definitely do better.

@MK agree with your rating and most of what you say except for Gini. He is one of the prime culprits for going missing in games against smaller teams. Sure against your Arsenal's, your City's, your Spurs he turns it on but then it's always a damp squib against the lesser sides - he has been one of the most culpable of a lax attitude against these teams and certainly hasn't been a consistent 7/ 10 performer. His form swings wildly game to game - he'll have a 9/ 10 against City and have a few 5/ 10's against lesser teams, then another bright performance. In terms of good, consistent performances he is miles off, it is something he needs to improve on big time (and was one of the things sighted as a weakness of his before he signed) .

Sterling ain't worth 50mil in other words twice the amount for Depay who is a much better player, not hating just being honest. The English media hypes up every young player to be more than what they are then they fade out as fast as they came about eg. Rodwell, Cleverly, Kyle Walker, Caulker tons of them. "All over hyped" and at the end of the day they end up being put under the spot light which makes their deficiencies pop up like zit. Should have taken the 40mil because in truth he ain't worth but 15mil - 20mil.

Have to agree with redohio on this one. I would have accepted the last bid from City and closed the book on the whole affair. Seemed a reasonable deal to me.

By the time qpr get there cut and Sterling gets his loyalty bonus etc we won't be left with much from any of it. Might as well put the pain in the arse in the reserves and run his contract down.

tbh mate you're prob right though I kinda like the stance the club are taking - think City will bid again closer to the 50 mil and we'll accept ok - crazy money like but English players def go for a lot more than they are prob worth, think back to the like of 18mil for Bentley, the 35mil for Carroll etc etc

How is it, forever? Is he worth 50m? I wouldn't pay that for a kid still learning the game. Now we are stuck with this circus that would have been averted had we just taken the money and ended this farce so we can get on with the prep for the season. Obviously, some on here like our name being in the media for the dumbest reasons. Sometimes, you got to let stuff go instead clinging to a situation that would only make us look bad

IF Benteke gets a run of games he will score goals and he is a menace for opposition defenders but will he play consistently if sturridge is fit? Probably best striker available given no UCL next season or for the foreseeable future

Seems there is a famine of quality leaders these days. As noted pool, Chelsea, United, Arsenal used to have leaders in at least 2 if not 3 areas of the pitch: Carra and Gerard; Cech, Terry and Lamps; Schmeichel, G. Nev and Keane; Seaman, Adams and Viera.
Lack of leaders, lack of loyalty and lack of will to win.

Look at the points difference between united and Liverpool last season. What have Liverpool done to bridge such a big gap? United have significantly strengthened their midfield, bastian and now Morgan, Liverpool can't blame injuries as united had a worse injury record. United did apart from 3 or 4 games play poorly last season but still finished fourth, i don't see how they can play any worse and have a stronger squad so why would they finish lower than 4th? Arsenal have strengthened by signing cech but still need a strong cm/ dm, a world class striker and possibly a cb. They tend to be mentally weak and lack leaders also. I don't think they are as settled as you think with several players like wilshere, the ox and Walcott unhappy with their lack of game time. I think city are probably the most likely to drop out of the top 4 but i don't see who is good enough to replace them. Spurs have a chance if Kane has another good season and some of their signings from last year step up a level

Your having a giraffe ed001. Man utd will definitely be top 4. I reckon 2nd or 3rd, think Chelsea top arsenal 2nd or 3rd and city 4th. Liverpool will be struggling to make top 6! Liverpool have only bought 1 player that has improved them. Clyne is slightly better than Johnson, Milner is no better than Gerrard, Firminio is no better than Sterling. you still need a world class GK, CB and Striker to push for top 4
{Ed001's Note - why? They have spent well but why will they defo be top 4? Arsenal are a settled side, which is a big advantage, Chelsea are a big way ahead with a settled side. So it is only really City and United we can aim for and United were woeful last season, even adding the new players they will need to play better to be certain of a top 4 place.}
